You make a good point; no one should get any credit for recognizing the obvious. I remember a lot of posters on this board clamoring for Spikes to be signed once his last season at Cincinnati began. Some fans even undertook independent efforts to recruit him by wearing his jersey at the Bills home game against Cinci.

They could go either way. If the Bills can't fix the O-line in the upcoming draft/free agency period, then upgrading the defense should be their priority. They could win some games with a pathetic offense so long as the defense can prevent teams from converting third downs at will.

I agree; trading down for more picks is precisely what a team with the number of problems Houston has should do. Reggie Bush isn't going to fix them. Their offensive line is even worse than ours, NOBODY is going to look good behind that line. If they can get some decent linemen I fully expect their skill position players to improve dramatically.

The problem with the defense, IMHO, is that the offense scored too darned quickly. Those guys spent A LOT of time on the field during games and they got tired. Parcells knew this so his plan was to slow down the Bills offense and run at them often.

I don't think that Clements was relieved because of the playcalling for, as you said, it didn't change much once Mularkey took over. The problem with the offense isn't playcalling, it's the offensive line. When the line's performance is inconsistent, the same play will only work sporadically against similar defensive fronts. Project this phenomena to cover the entire playbook and you can see how it would drive an offensive coordinator crazy as he desperately tries to find something, anything, that will gain some yards. Mularkey could see that Clements was struggling and, like any good supervisor, he took over. Unfortunately, he couldn't find any answers either but since someone has to be the scapegoat, Clements gets canned. Donahoe was let go, I think, because he failed to significantly improve the offensive line which was a problem for years prior to his tenure in Buffalo. Even the best running backs and wide receivers look average at best when playing behind a line that can't consistently open holes in the running game nor slow down rushers in the passing game.

I doubt that you were mature enough to be that thoughtful in your youth; I know that I wasn't. We tend to remember our past experiences in light of our current personality so, looking back, we probably regard any negative treatment that we received as being more unjust than it actually was. You should give a kid like him a few years to grow up and learn some things before you pronounce him to be an ass. Sadly, James Dungy won't get that chance.

Why not switch Mike Williams to D-line and hypnotize him before every game into thinking that the opposing QB is a twinkie?

We don't need Reggie Bush. Look at Denver, they get great production out of every who-dat running back they put behind their O-line. If the Bills can sling together a terrific O-line, Shaud Williams will look like an all-pro. I also submit that a terrific O-line will make our qb, receivers and tight ends look a hell of a lot better.

It's too bad the team can't fine defensive players for every tackle they miss. I'm talking about when the film shows a guy clearly has a shot and fails to take the target down.

Here's a possible solution to our DT woes... Benny Anderson is BIG. He's a liability at guard so why not try him out as a run-stuffing DT? All he has to do is run-block a center and a guard and just having his girth in position is going to make the opposing O-line's life more difficult. He can pretend that the ball-carrier is a rusher and, unlike on offense, it'll be okay for him to hold (tackle)!

On pass plays, I'd start counting after the snap. I could usually get to four and then JP would be running for his life. He's holding onto the ball for too long as he's trying to make his reads. When he does throw, it's because he's hurried by the defensive pressure and that's probably why his accuracy is off. I think he's still adjusting to the speed of the professional game. Behind our line, he needs to chuck it within three seconds or start running.

Competition tennis courts have systems to determine when a ball has crossed a line, why not have such things in the NFL as well? The refs can always choose to ignore the data they're getting because of mitigating circumstances--like a player reaching for the endzone after he's down--but it's a real travesty when a player actually HAS crossed the goal line but the refs don't see it. Remember Travis Henry's uncalled touchdown run against the Raiders last year? The game might have been won if they'd counted it.

I agree also. If it's good enough for horseracing, where money's on the line, then it's good enough for the NFL where, as we all know, money's on the line.

Hmmm... You know, whenever a QB isn't playing well, people start chanting for him to be yanked in favor of his backup. I remember this happening even when Kelly was QB. Perhaps Mularkey put Holcomb in for a series in order to demonstrate that the Bucs defense was really handing it to the Bills yesterday, regardless of who was at quarterback. Seeing your veteran backup be ineffectual against the same defense may indeed serve as a confidence builder in this light.

Lest everyone forget, TD drafted all of his defensive linemen in round 2 or later. Perhaps the rest of the league discriminates against white, high-motor linemen which is why they were still on the board after round 1? The only (half)white player TD has drafted in the first round was Losman, no?

The Bucs' defense is engineered to shut down the pass; that's why the Raiders were eviscerated in the superbowl. They're not so good against the run, though, because they utilize a lighter, quicker defensive line to intensify the pass rush. Minnesota relies primarily on their passing game. If the Bills' o-line plays well and McGahee can get into a rhythm, we're going to gain a lot of yards on the ground against them. Don't expect J.P. to pass much at all, just enough to keep T.B. from stacking the box. This should chew the clock nicely and, if the Bills can run into the end zone on most of their drives, T.B.'s offense will have to get some quick strikes which isn't what they're best at.

I went to the OC Bills Backers bar for the season opener a few years ago because the LA Bills Backers didn't know where they were going to be. It was a new bar for them and there were a lot of people in there. I ordered food and watched in horror like the rest as they struggled to obtain the satellite signal. The manager claimed that no one could tune the game in but that turned out to be false as people called friends at other bars to see if the game was on. The first quarter came and went as I waited for the check so I could book it to another sports bar in the vicinity. I missed most of the first half and Bills lost anyway. I've never been to another OC Bills Backer's event since but I wish them better luck.

Bobby McGee's was near the intersection of Olive and First in Burbank. Gitana was nearby at the intersection of Magnolia and Third and Geppetto's was on Olive, I think. Bobby McGee's is a BJ's now, Gitana lost their liquor license and closed down and Geppetto's is a nightclub now. There was no place left for us in Burbank, so we went to Timmy Nolan's which was too cramped and then ended up at Q's in Pasadena which is now closed for renovation. They'll be at Moose's now, but I don't think that's going to work out for the same reasons that Timmy Nolan's didn't; it's probably a stop-gap at best.
