Why is Sammy Watkins not returning punts now?
1billsfan replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Deion Sanders had 212 punt returns and 155 kickoff returns in his career. I'm sure the "this isn't Madden excuse" could have been brought up since he was so integral as a defensive player. He did those in a majority of games that were not "must win" games. So this comment rings very hollow to me. Sammy had 6 punt returns for TDs and 1 kickoff return for a TD in college. They gave up two first round picks because he had added value in the return game for precisely these kind of situations. -
Why is Sammy Watkins not returning punts now?

What is the point of saving him from injury when they are truly in a must win situation the next four weeks? Seriously. -
I get not doing it during the season so as not to get him injured, but the Bills are in a "win all the remaining games or the season is over" mode right now. It's almost like they are saving him for the playoffs, yet don't realize that they already are in playoff time considering the percentages of them getting into the playoffs goes down significantly with any loss in the remaining games. Sammy had 6 TD returns in college. The margin for wins and losses is so small in this league that you have to pull every lever that gives you the possibility in huge momentum swinging plays that could mean the difference between winning or playing for nothing again in the last three games. I noticed that the Giants had ODB as one of the two punt return guys on the TD return by Dwayne Harris. The replay showed that ODB swinging out for a lateral pass brought three defenders out of the play which was a huge factor Harris' TD. So Sammy could even do those type of things to open up a huge return as well. It's time the Bills bring some creativity and wrinkles to this game. Maybe they will bring back the bubble screen for Sammy that the Eagles would not be expecting since they never do it? Sammy returning punts shouldn't even be a wrinkle though. He should be on punt returns until the Bills are officially out of playoff contention.

Bill Belichick and Chip Kelly are buddies and it would serve Rex and the Bills coaching staff to change a lot of their verbal and hand signals they used in the last Bills/Pats game. I'm positive that Belichick is going to give Chip all the Bills intel he asks for. The Bills need to come up with a few offensive and defensive "out of the box" wrinkles for this one.

Roman should spread 'em and shred 'em

I actually would not employ the quick pass game because it would keep the Texans' defensive line fresh. I would want to tire out the defensive line with planned extended roll outs, reverses and screen passes. Make them chase Taylor, Watkins and McCoy all first half so that they lose their legs in the second half where you can gash them in the run and have Taylor get time to pass deep down the field. -
Article: Comparing Tyrod to the field after 9 games
1billsfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Oh geez, thanks for the correction...YIKES! I don't know, how long should we expect Tyrod to feel like he's close to his ceiling? I'm really hoping his ceiling is top 10 QB, I don't want middle of the pack. He will be back next year as the presumed starter no doubt. The question is will he be there as the established franchise QB or will he be in another battle with a free agent QB like RGIII. That's what these remaining games will tell us at least. -

I was a big supporter of EJ but that went away real quick after the Jags game. I now think that he’s just too mentally weak to ever become a franchise QB. The difference between EJ and Tyrod is that Tyrod is in his fifth year. He has a different bar to clear than EJ did when he was playing regularly. By the 10th game of your fifth year you should be getting close to your prime performance level. What I’m currently seeing is a level of performance in Taylor that’s similar to Fitzpatrick which is very concerning for fans viewing his performance through that type of lens. We don’t want that middling level, we want more than that. Having said all that, I want Tyrod Taylor to become “THE MAN” tomorrow. I think that he really needs that signature game where he grabs this team by the lapels and takes over the game with his arm and legs. If they lose tomorrow and Taylor was part of the problem in a “must win” game situation, fans will be left with the feeling that the chances Taylor is the long term answer is slim because he's been in the league for an extended time a already. Basically he’ll start being looked at as the flashy “capable but limited” Fitzpatrick QB model. We are ALL Tyrod Taylor fans tomorrow. I hope that he can seize the moment. Bills fans need to see him do that. C’mon Tyrod, be the man tomorrow! -
All they need is Hopkins. Basically Hoyer will run around with all day to throw looking for Hopkins to get open. This is not the 2015 Bills defense. The pass rush is not there for numerous reasons. IMO this game will boil down to which combo has the much better game...Hoyer and Hopkins or Taylor and Watkins.
-
Make no mistake...the Texans will throw the ball deep and have success just like the Chiefs did. While McCoy is part of the plan, the main plan on offense should be to beat the Texans by outscoring them through the air. Can Roman drop the conservative play calling for a full game? Can Tyrod Taylor have two good halves? Can Tyrod use his legs much more? Can he finally get that elusive "signature" win? Can the Bills defense get a turnover? Can the Bills hold on to the ball? These are the key to winning this game IMO.

I hate to admit it, but Taylor sucks

Both Taylor and EJ freeze up. At this point does it even matter who's in there? The Bills will be going hard for a veteran QB who doesn't get the "deer in the headlights" look in crunch time. IMO today was the beginning of the end for Taylor's long term NFL starter career. -

They could bench him. I'm not seeing much of a difference between him and EJ anyways. At least EJ can hit that deep downfield middle pass that's been nonexistent. Taylor looked scared in the pocket in the second half. -

Taylor proved today that he just doesn't have what it takes to be the long term answer. It's harsh, but the results are the results. This game was winnable and they needed their QB to make big plays in the second half and he just couldn't do it. He was frozen in the pocket and could not make a decision on what to do before it was too late time and time and time again. IMO he's a very good backup QB in this league and I have little doubt the Bills will be trying hard to find a true starting QB this offseason. -

Right now, Taylor has been nothing more than a nice story about a long time backup getting his chance and doing an ok job with that chance. He has the opportunity today to get that first signature win under his belt and start changing perceptions that he's probably going to end up becoming a career backup QB. It may not be fair, but today's huge game will go a long way in determining Taylor's future with this team. We're all rooting for him to play great. -

We are all rooting for him to become the QB who can win these type of must win games that they always lose. So it's a figure of speech when I say he has to beat the Chiefs tomorrow to start differentiating himself from the QBs who never got it done in Buffalo. Even if he plays badly, Taylor will have five more games to prove he's getting much better and there's a real future with him. But he does have an opportunity right here in front of him to stamp that he's not like the other guys. -

I know what they are doing and if they continue to do it they will have about a zero chance to win tomorrow. The NFL game is about psychology as much as it is about Xs and Os. If they go conservative you can expect a repeat of last weeks game and another year just missing the playoffs by a game or two. -

If Taylor's main job is to not to turn the ball over then he what good is he to this team? Seriously. I'm tired of watching this team play like they are scared of interceptions. It's been this way for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. I hope Roman finds his balls and tells Tyrod to throw the football early and often tomorrow. If they play your way they will lose this game, bank on it. The team needs to sow seeds of doubt early in the game and have the KC fans panicking watching their team down 14-0 in the 1st quarter with Alex Smith as their QB. That is how you win these kind of games. Not by keeping the KC fans involved for four quarters by going conservative. -

Fitz has 100 more completions and 6 more TDs in only two extra games started. You're splitting hairs when you get into these kind of back and forth arguments. They have different playing styles yet have the same level of output at the QB position IMO. If Taylor wants to differentiate himself then beat the Chiefs. That would dramatically change the fortunes of this team and set himself far apart from the nobody QBs that came before him. -

1billsfan replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is his fifth year in the league. That’s a long time. He got his chance to start and so far his output is kind of on par with Fitzpatrick. He has these next six games to either solidify himself as the 2016 starter or the Bills will bring in serious competition for the job like Kaepernick. If Taylor wants to win the job permanently then lets see what he does in the Kansas City Chiefs game tomorrow. That team seems to always be the iceberg to the Bills Titanic playoff hopes. We are all rooting for Taylor to do it, but our hopes are diminished because of all the frustrating three and outs. This game is huge because it will be the season’s turning point one way or the other and none of us want to start talking draft. -
Bills at Chiefs Predictions

The winner makes the playoffs, the loser doesn't make the playoffs. -
If the 'Skins cut RGIII this offseason would you want him?
1billsfan replied to dayman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't see any NFL team signing RGIII to a substantial, player-friendly contract. If that's the case, the Bills would probably end up be high on his list since they would probably have the best roster among those teams looking to add for a legit QB competition. Other than the Bills, he would probably want to sign with the Texans, but I doubt that O'Brien will want him. -

1billsfan replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't just see any QBs in the draft (picking where they're picking) that would be worth anything to the Bills for at least two years down the road. Kaep and RGIII have both performed at a high level in the league. I see no reason not to want either being brought into the QB mix. I still think you draft a QB though in rd 3-5 to develop. That way you have Taylor who seems to be your baseline average-below average starter, the FA reclamation project Kaep or RGIII and a rookie. That's a decent 2016 QB scenario IMO. -
If the 'Skins cut RGIII this offseason would you want him?
1billsfan replied to dayman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think this is the perfect spot for RGIII. He's been humbled and he can now begin the task of rebuilding his career with a clean slate under a head coach like Rex. The expectation would be that he'd be Tyrod's backup and when pressed into action (it's clear Tyrod's going to miss games every season) RGIII may flourish with a solid O line, running game and skilled receiving options. That's when you hope you have two young similar-styled QBs who are making each other better in a QB competition. If he doesn't put in the work then you just cut him and move on. -
I hate to admit it, but Taylor sucks
1billsfan replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It starts with the Chiefs and Texans games. Win those and coast the Bills to the playoffs then Taylor will get a big payday. Lose them and the Bills will be adding a veteran QB to the mix like Kaep or RGIII. -
I hate to admit it, but Taylor sucks
1billsfan replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There's not much difference between Taylor and Fitzpatrick this year. If Taylor wants to differentiate himself from Fitzpatrick and the train of nobodies the Bills have had since Kelly then he needs to help them win these next couple of games. If he can't get it done these next two weeks then I hope the Bills will start setting their sights on getting either Kaepernick or Brees in the offseason. -
Real late with my observations but got to post
1billsfan replied to Billsfan1972's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm so done with "old school" Rex if they lose trying the run the ball down their throats. We need a head coach who is intelligent enough to actually use Watkins.
