McDermott in regards to Tyrod
1billsfan replied to TallskiWallski83's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes I am. I think there's a big psychological facet to the NFL game. Granted, the defense was an anchor drag to this team during the season no doubt. But that game turned on a dime when Taylor showed he had nothing. I like Taylor, but I think he is missing a key element to his game and that's closing the deal against good teams. BTW, nothing said on this board will have any impact to the decision Whaley and McDermott will make. If they bring him back then I'll just hope he can up his game against good teams. Because there'll be a lot of them next year. Their schedule looks brutal. -

No need to get sarcastic. It's just an opinion. -

IMO, the defensive collapse in the Oakland game was because that side of the ball saw Taylor's blank stare and they knew he had no answer. He was done. It was like popping a balloon with a needle. Taylor has only 2 fourth quarter comebacks in 29 game starts. Just think about that. Fans can twist and turn Taylor's numbers as much as they like, but the name of the NFL game is winning the game in crunch time. If your QB can not do that, then you are not going to make the playoffs unless you play in the AFC south division. Is he never going to get to the next level of putting the team on his shoulders and winning the tough games? I don't know, but that's his major flaw and it's a very bad one to have. If he's a Bill next year I'll be rooting for him and hoping he can do it. That's just how I feel about it. I do like the guy. -

The Bills offense was flawed. You simply can not win 10 games in this league when your QB relies on his running with the ball skills as much as his throwing the ball skills. In those "must win" games against teams that are as good or better than the Bills, they always seemed to get the short end of the stick because Taylor could not deliver TDs and points when it counted the most. This isn't to put the blame entirely on him, it's to point out that in this league your QB needs to win the game in the fourth quarter in close or comeback situations at least 3 times if you're going to make the playoffs. We all like Taylor the person, but I think the team that goes with him as their starter next year (this includes the Broncos) is not going to make the playoffs because he just can't do it in crunch time against good teams. If they keep Taylor, then I'll just have to hope that his game can reach a new level. -
I'm not sure if anyone saw the Vance Joseph press conference, but he literally looked like a deer in headlights. Denver looks like it has taken a bad turn with the Joseph hire and losing Wade. The difference between McDermott's presser and Joseph's is amazing. I'm feeling really good about the direction of this Bills team now. Marrone was the same marble mouthed, mr. know-it-all, in over his head college guy. Poor Jag fans. McVay was ok, but man he looks and is so young. At least he has Wade to take care of the defense which will help him a lot.

I get a fearlessness vibe from Cardale Jones. I think one of the biggest hurdles for QBs in the NFL is just getting over the fear. Being comfortable. The successful ones play with a fearlessness, and the average to bad QBs look like they play scared a lot of the time. There are exceptions like Fitz, but generally you need to get over the fear of playing if you are ever to become a top 10, franchise type of QB. I think that if Jones put in the time and effort (I believe the new coach will see to that), then I think he has a very good chance to overtake an average QB like Foles. I know there's nothing substantial to point to, to back up what I'm saying, it's simply just the vibe I get.
-
I would guess if they pick an OC from the Chiefs, then they would sign Nick Foles as a free agent and have a battle between him, Jones and a QB drafted between the 2nd-4th round. Foles would probably start with Jones eventually taking over at some point during the season.

While getting rid of Rex was messy, I think the Bills will finally get it right and have the quality coaches and roster to finally make the playoffs. As long as they stay healthy of course.

2016 draft and 4-3 defense...
1billsfan replied to HerdMenatlity1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's probably hard to be a leader when you're a rookie drafted in the middle rounds. I'm sure the "whatever" Bills' culture of Dareus and Gilmore probably set in by then. Foster and Ragland would go a long way in filling the leadership void on this team. -

If I'm the Bills, I want that #1 pick to also have a strong leader type of quality. They have drafted too many wallflower types like Dareus and Gilmore. Foster seems to check being worthy of the 10th overall pick and that leadership box. -

The Bills need guys like Foster. Not only for his ability, but for the attitude, toughness and leadership on the field. I think Foster would punch a player in the face if he avoided making a tackle. This team needs to have not just the head coach, but their players start holding each other accountable. -

Whaley de facto leader of Bills football operations
1billsfan replied to gjv001's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Pegula never gave his GM (his "football guy") the opportunity to pick the head coach. He tried it his way, and now he's going top try letting the "football guy" make important decisions approach. If this doesn't work, then Pegula will fire Whaley and hire a trusted football consultant to find his next GM. I know that the media is going ballistic on the Bills, but I think the team is making logical decisions right now. Rex is gone, Whaley is in change and is conducting a real head coaching search unlike the last time. I think that Todd Haley is going to be Doug's choice in the end, but at least he's lining up very good plan B, C, ect. head coaching candidates if his number one guy (whoever that is) falls through. I don't have a problem with any of the coaches he's interviewing. -
Schefter: Bills to give new HC more power within org
1billsfan replied to Wayne Arnold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Joe Banner? Where are his professional NFL success stories? LOL Who's next to weigh in on the Bills situation with their NFL wisdom, Richie Kotite? -
Seriously, has Houston ever had to play a hard schedule?
-
Doug Whaley is not going to hire yet another failed Bill Belichick protege who's never shown the ability to develop an NFL QB. IMO, it's going to be Todd Haley. Whaley's a Pittsburgh guy, he got his Rothlesbuger QB in Cardale Jones last year, he has his Antonio Brown in Sammy Watkins, and his Bell in McCoy. Oh yeah, Haley is a Pittsburgh guy too! If there is no hire coming soon, then it looks like Whaley's head coach of choice is still working.

Schefter says decision is made - Tyrod is gone

Would any Bills fan be afraid of the Bills facing Taylor as an opponent? The answer's no, hence the reason why the Bills are ready to move on. Having a steady, do no harm QB is not a reason to keep a guy. They must keep looking for their franchise QB like Oakland found in Derek Carr. -
Coach search has come (again) who is the best fit?
1billsfan replied to mead107's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think that Haley might be the guy because he just seems like THE logical fit for the Bills. Haley's a rust belt guy, he's experienced, he knows how to get the best out of big, strong armed QBs (hello Cardale), a star #1 receiver (hello Sammy), he knows the AFC, he clearly knows our weaknesses on defense, he's not going to take any "stuff" from players. He might be one of those second time head coaches who learned what to do and not to do while at KC, and is ready to become a great NFL head coach. I like that he said he isn't going to talk to any organization about head coaching jobs as long as the Steelers are still in the playoffs. This is the kind of focus this organization needs in a head coach. -
PFF: Bills Should Build Around Tyrod
1billsfan replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Tyrod stays, then he's just the bridge QB to the real franchise QB. I'm fine if he comes back at nothing more than 15 mill a year for two years. Then draft Jone's competition this year for the job of becoming the real Bills franchise QB (Watson, Kizer, Mahomes, Kaaya, ect..). If Taylor walks, then you suck it up and go with the winner of QB competition between the young QBs. Maybe go heavy on creating a Cowboy's type of great offensive line so that the young QB will have a lighter lift in their first year starting like Prescott. I would not build any team around Taylor because he simply isn't a good enough foundation for something big. -
I'm not defending the Bills defense at all, but there were chances in at least four of the loses that Taylor could have pulled out a win if he wasn't so limited as a passer. Who?... Jones, 2017 high draft pick, McGloin, Glennon, trade for a QB, Romo? Once you determine that Taylor has hit his ceiling and that you don't think you will ever achieve your goal of winning a Superbowl with him, it really doesn't matter who the name is of the starting QB on week one. You just have to have a plan in place to have a QB on your team you either know or believe has the potential of becoming the starting QB who will be a large part in achieving that goal. I think the Bills will select a QB in rd 2-4 and that guy will battle Jones over the next two years over the starting position.
-
The Bills star receiver Sammy Watkins just told a boat load of reporters yesterday that the receivers have been open all year and have been doing their jobs. People on this board have talked about this all year long. While Taylor may be a steady, do you no harm QB, he's obviously extremely limited when it comes to playing teams teams with winning records where he must step up and win the game on his arm. If he's not the guy, he's not the guy. You've got to move on with the search for "the guy". We all like Taylor, but it's hard to sign on for two more years of having a really hard time beating winning teams because of his limitations.

12-28: Media Day - Anthony Lynn's Presser as HC
1billsfan replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Andy Reid never held the position of an NFL coordinator before becoming head coach. John Harbaugh was only a special teams coordinator before becoming head coach. Mike Tomlin had only one year as a defensive coordinator. Bob McAdoo had only two years as an offensive coordinator. Marv Levy never went above special teams coordinator in the NFL specifically, before becoming the Bills head coach. Anthony Lynn took over as an NFL offensive coordinator after two games and the Bills finished ranking #1 in rushing and #7 in scoring. I'm getting tired of people and the media questioning Lynn's qualifications for the job. The list of long time NFL coordinators who were not cut out to be a head coach is very looooooooong. It's not the "end all, be all" of what it takes to become a head coach in the NFL. -

The media and people who are drawn into the drama have this strange need to be perpetually outraged. Get a life is right. Whaley will have his end of the season press conference on Monday. The season was over last Sunday. This final game has become an exhibition game. We can wait five days to hear from Doug Whaley. -

Funny, I came away with Lynn being a Cardale Jones backer! LOL His critique of Taylor not using the middle of the field and that he'd have to work on it in the off season signaled to me that he'd rather have Jones back there next year as his eventual starting QB. That was a total "whoops" slip when he said Jones was his starter.
