Tyrod’s style of play is just not conducive to long term NFL franchise success. To have long term success you need a drop back QB to play pitch and catch with his receivers. His closest “run around” style success story is Russell Wilson (check the list of Superbowl winning QBs and all of them are drop back passers) and that guy showed a knack of making big game winning plays by mid point of his rookie season. Taylor is at 29 game starts and he still hasn’t shown this ability. So not picking up his option and moving on from Taylor is not running up the white flag, it’s loading up your roster with draft picks and free agency players that will give Jones (and the drafted drop back passing QB they will no doubt bring in within the next two drafts) the best team around them for long term success in a system and style that wins championships. IMO, this team would be just spinning it’s wheels with Taylor and not truly readying this team for long term success with the classic drop back pitch and catch system using the whole field, WRs, RBs and your TEs. I don’t want my QB to lead the league in QB rushing yards. I want him to throw the ball and win the majority of close games in the fourth quarter.

2017 Bills Schedule Away - New York Jets, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals Home - Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans For those who want to pick up the option, take a look at this 2017 schedule and tell me a realistic number of wins for the Bills with Tyrod Taylor starting. IMO, the win total is 6 wins, 7 wins tops. Jets, Dolphins, Chargers, Panthers, Broncos, Saints, Titans are the 7 games that are potentially realistic wins (this is expecting splitting wins with the Jets and Dolphins). I think this is a very fair projection. So the question is, if Taylor QBs the Bills to 7 wins, is the front office (or Bills fans) going to stomach him being the 2018 starter? Odds are probably not. So now you're on the hook in 2018 for 18 million in cap money of which could have gone to stacking the offensive line and bolstering the roster in free agency to help out a third year QB like Jones or a newly drafted QB. I know that fans want to believe in Taylor, but if fans are being truly realistic, there is just no way you can pick up the option because the odds are Taylor won't be the starter in 2018 and you'll need that money to help out the team in other areas.
-
IMO, Taylor tops out at 6 wins with the hard schedule that they have. It's that brutal. So odds are, if Taylor does not reach at least 9 or more wins, the Bills will probably be starting a young QB in 2018 (Cardale or a QB drafted within the next two drafts). So why would you risk having a 17 or 18 million 2018 cap hit for a QB that won't even be starting? It's just not a realistic scenario given that cap hit and the schedule this year.
-
If it were me, I'd move on from Tyrod and have Jones as the starter. If they want to bring Taylor back as a bridge to the franchise QB, then I'm only ok only if they don't pick up the option. One of the reasons for that is because the Bills could be a team that's only a QB away from a championship. You have to think of multiple scenarios that could pop up and I don't want the Bills to be stuck with Taylor's contract for 2018.
-
I'm not on board with picking up the option because it limits the Bills in 2018. Specifically, there are a lot of aging franchise QBs in this league who may be made unexpectedly available if those teams decide to move on with a drafted QB in the next couple of years. If Brees, Manning, Rothlesburger or even Brady have a so so year and that team has a replacement in place and make a change, the Bills could be on the outside looking in after being on the hook for Taylor's large 2018 contract. I hope the plan is to not pick up the option and let Taylor know they only want him back on one year contract. I don't even care if that 2017 contract is in the 15 million dollar range. Just can't be on the hook for 2018. I'd have no problem rolling with Jones or a rookie if Taylor turns down the one year offer.

Wanna dump Tyrod, then who's the new QB
1billsfan replied to bisonbrigade's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Of the NFL teams without established starting QBs, the only team that would fit Taylor for a playoff run would be the Texans and they have a ton of money tied up with Oswieler. I say this because the Texans play in the weakest division. No way Taylor takes the Broncos to the playoffs with that schedule. -

I think the risk of that happening is very minimal. Of the teams that missed the playoffs the only one Taylor would have a shot a making the playoffs with is Denver and they have the hardest schedule in 2017. Chiefs twice, Raiders twice, Cowboys, Patriots, Giants... Taylor has been overrated by the national media. His numbers are on the same level with Hoyer who made 2 million dollars last year. The Bills will probably draft a QB this year or next year to compete with Jones. If Taylor's ok with a huge cut in pay then he might be back, otherwise they will sign a cheap veteran like Hoyer as a placeholder. The Bills aren't making the playoffs this year unless they have a Prescott situation with a rookie QB or Jones. It's time to keep looking for the franchise QB. -

He's already been a professional football player for 20 games (4 preseason, 16 regular season). That's a lot of games. Cardale seems like a gamer to me and is not prone to feeling nervous. You're saying that he won't be ready after say mid-season, 12 games (4 preseason, 8 regular season)? That's 32 total professional games. I don't buy into that for a second. -

No need to get so defensive. BTW, I got the stats from pro football reference and it said that Taylor had 145 passing yards per game for his career. Also, it needs to be pointed out that Hoyer has a huge lead over Taylor in 4qc and gwd games. I don't know why you're so upset. I provided a lot of stats. I don't want either QB. I'm good with giving Cardale a full season and seeing what he can do. If he's bad the Bills will get a top three pick and be set at QB for the next 10 years. -

1billsfan replied to bisonbrigade's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not that I want the guy, but Hoyer is a free agent and his statistics are very similar to Talyor's... Taylor - 29 starts, 14-14 record, 62.3% comp, 6257 yards, 37 TDs, 11.8 ypc, 145 ypg, 92.3 rating, 83 sacks, 1 fourthqc, 2 gwd Hoyer - 31 starts, 16-15 record, 59.5% comp, 8608 yards, 44 TDs, 12.1 ypc, 175 ypg, 84.8 rating, 65 sacks, 6 fourthqc, 6 gwd It's funny that Taylor gets so much love from the national media and Hoyer is looked at as a bum. Report: Greg Olson to Rams as QB coach
1billsfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You're right, it's just my realistic forecast of what their record would be. IMO, with Tyrod starting and with that schedule the Bills will win 5 or 6 games next year. With Cardale starting, I think their win total will be 2-5 wins. Of course that schedule could be easier than it looks right now. But who cares. If you want to be relevant and a contender, the name of the games is finding a franchise QB. I think starting Cardale the full season affords you two potential lanes of actually finding that franchise QB. Starting Tyrod almost guarantees that they will miss out on any top franchise QBs in next years draft and they still won't know what they might have with Cardale. It's going to be very interesting to see what they do. -

I don't know if anyone has seen the Bills schedule next year, but it's a very tough one. Even if the Bills did bring back an average game managing QB like Taylor, a 4-12 season is not a stretch with him being the starter for the entire year. I wonder if there might be two crazy strategies at play... Strategy 1: Try to make a blockbuster deal for a QB like Andrew Luck. Yes crazy, but why not try. Strategy 2: Build the defense and OL in this draft (no QBs), let Cardale Jones start throughout the season, trade away McCoy this year for a 2018 pick (they might need it for a trade up)...then draft Sam Darnold (or Josh Rosen if he's taken before them) in 2018. That is if Jones doesn't win the job with a very impressive season and getting them into the playoffs. I actually don't mind strategy 2, because Tom Brady is still going to play next year and maybe even the year after that. It might be time to just bite the bullet and embrace the opportunity that a rough schedule gives you by way of putting your team in play for drafting the next great QB. Which would happen just as the the sun is setting on the Patriots Brady/Belichick dynasty. The Bills have been just treading water just to get into the playoffs and we have now all seen how joyless it can be when you don't have a QB worthy of it (see this years wildcard losers). You get embarrassed...but hey, you made the playoffs! Letting Cardale play is basically scratching off the lottery ticket IMO. So there are actually two possibilities of finding your franchise QB at play here. Fans won't like this, but is treading water really the best strategy? -
Who fills these open QB spots
1billsfan replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wonder if the bad teams in need of a starting QB will all balk at taking a QB in the first round this year because the 2018 draft class will have Sam Darnold in it and this years class seems like a dud. If you're going to be bad, what's the point of picking a QB this year which looks like a poor QB draft class? Why not throw your hat into the ring for that #1 pick in 2018? Is there a chance that either no QB or just one QB gets picked in the first round this year? Totally off topic, but I wonder what would the Colts price be for Luck? If you gave them enough draft picks, they could potentially be picking Darnold (after tanking the season) and build that team from scratch with a boat load of high picks in the coming years. It's clearly going to take too much time for them to build that roster enough for Luck to be of any use for them. That franchise seems stuck and I wonder if you knocked them out with draft picks you could make a blockbuster deal. I know it's far fetched. LOL -
If Bills dump Taylor, where does he end up?
1billsfan replied to dtgolder's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Irregardless of how we feel about Jones, the Bills will be either be bringing back Taylor or have another option via getting a QB through draft, trade or free agency. Jones starting in 2017 is probably plan C or D right now. Plan A is probably getting Romo. -

1billsfan replied to dtgolder's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's not problem solved. It's going with the unknown vs the known of an 8-8 guy. NFL teams want to win the Superbowl, not knowingly just barely miss out on making the playoffs. With guys like Taylor and Fitz, that's what you're signing up for. Unless it's clear they're just a placeholder for the drafted QB who will take over at some point in hopes that he's the next Prescott or Carr. -

1billsfan replied to dtgolder's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don't you think that teams will learn from what the Texans and Jets did? NFL teams are drooling over guys like Prescott, Carr, Cousins. CHEAP starting QB contracts and production. I think that the trend going forward will be to not give out big contracts to questionable talents. Better to draft and play a rookie or young QB than to just throw money away chasing an 8-8, 9-7 season. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bills feel like they will win just as many games with Cardale Jones starting in 2017 as they could with Taylor because Jones will actually pull off some of those 4th quarter wins because he's fearless (he'll also cost them some wins with mistakes). It's two sides of the coin. -

1billsfan replied to dtgolder's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think you're crazy. No NFL team is giving Taylor that kind of deal. He's nothing more than a top notch placeholder QB at this point of his career. The league's changing quickly. There's no time to play the wait and see game for a few years. If you haven't shown that you're a top 10 QB after 29 starts and being 28 years old then no team is going to give you 15 million a year, let alone for two years guaranteed. IMO, he maxes out at 12 million for a one year deal with either the Bills, Jets or Browns. Which ever team it is, they are still going to draft a QB in this draft that they feel will take over the starting job from Taylor when they're ready. -

Thanks. I think that the Bills will go the route of keep buying lottery tickets (drafting QBs) and try to catch lightning in a bottle after the first round the way the Cowboys, Seahawks and Raiders have with their QBs. Taylor isn't the answer, unless they want him to be the stopgap to the franchise QB they're looking for. There's a good chance that Taylor signs with the Bills (if they even want him) after he realizes that they will offer the best contract which will be a LOT less than the one they have now. I'm thinking 10-12 million for 2017, that's it. They get their stopgap QB and he gets another year to audition. -

You guys have to stop using the "isn't even close" line. Here's a recent poll of Bronco fans... http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?s=cdf74f1772c0d56e347d9006d628c14d&t=125535 Poll results: Tyrod Taylor The Next Broncos' QB! 69% No 23% Yes Comments… "Lol no." "He's not very good. So I guess that would give us the choice of 3 not very good QB's." "Tyrod sucks. No thanks" "Everyone who voted yes needs to watch more Bills games, he stinks." "I wanted to see him last year, but now that TS has put in a whole season of learning, I'd say no." "Continue to develop Lynch and Siemian. Taylor isn't good enough for the Broncos to go in a different direction." "I heard John tried to aquire him a couple years ago but having 2 young QB's on the roster who are cheap already would make this move stupid." -

That's good because Stafford had 8 4qc and 8 gwd, while Taylor had 1 each. -

Taylor had McCoy, Siemian had nothing at RB. Yet Siemian had superior stats than Taylor in the stats I listed. Also, Taylor had 1 4qc and 1 gwd, while Siemian had 3 4qc and 2 gwd. The kicker is the Oakland game which Taylor played awful. Siemian went off on the Raiders in the last game of the season. I'm sure Elway doesn't want any part of signing Taylor at this point. -

1billsfan replied to dtgolder's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Siemian had more wins, yards overall, yards per game, and touchdown passes than Taylor, and he's going to be their backup QB to Lynch. The Musgrave hire screams they want him to get Lynch ready to take over as the starter. No way Taylor is in their plans, and even if he is the Bills won't be worried. What's Taylor going to look like without an elite RB to carry the load? -

1billsfan replied to dtgolder's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Elway brought in both McCoy and Musgrave to work with Lynch and Siemian. There's no way they are picking up Taylor now. Musgrave worked wonders with Carr and they want him to do that with Lynch. Also, I'm sure Elway saw how badly Taylor completely folded against the Raiders. I think Talyor's going to have a hard time finding a team because he isn't the normal type of QB and teams don't want to change their whole offense for a QB who's considered average at best.
