why draft a raw QB when we've got Cardale on the roster
1billsfan replied to Commish's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like Cardale, but with him I wonder if the drive and love of football is there. He seems like a great guy, but I just don't hear or see the stories of him working out like a mad man trying to overtake Taylor. Condrads on him graduating OSU BTW. I remember Mike Williams who had all of the traits you'd want in an OT, but he just wasn't into football all that much. I wonder if Cardale just wants to do other things with his life and football is just a "for now" thing until the next phase. You either have that drive or you don't. I'm sure a big part of the decision on QB at #10 hinges on how they view Cardale as a possible destination of a bridge QB like Taylor. If the feelings aren't that strong that he could ever become the franchise QB, then QB becomes a real possibility in the first round. -
Now that Crunch Time is coming...........

The difference is that there's a growing wave coming of teams that are looking for franchise QBs. It's starting this year and the jockeying for the 2018 QB class will reach a frenzy level. -

Don't forget that the Browns have a boatload of picks to deal ahead of the Bills from #12. I'm also thinking that Watson, Trubisky and Mahomes will be gone by #10. I just don't see the Bills trading up because they don't have that many picks to begin with. So at least if that happens a prime draft prospect will be there that they could either take or they could trade back and get a great deal. The best scenario then would be to trade back with a team wanting a top 5 player that fell to #10 for a 1st rd 2018 pick and a 3rd or 4th this year. Two #1s in 2018 would give the Bills a great opportunity to finally find their franchise QB. -

The list of teams visiting with, or working out the top QBs has skyrocketed. The Bengals even worked out Mahomes. This means that 11 out of the first 13 selections have possible QB selection in play. After that there's Redskins, Giants, Texans, Chiefs, Steelers. This means it's a sellers market. Way too many teams need a QB. It's jumped two-fold because of all the aging QBs in the league. That means these QBs will get drafted much earlier than expected. It's strange why the media isn't picking up on this. Maybe they're afraid of stepping away from the group think because this QB class doesn't have a clear cut order and they don't like that. -

You probably won't have to worry about it because I think Watson, Trubisky and Mahomes will all be gone by #10. The media isn't giving the proper picture on what's going to happen. They've underrated this qb class. If one of those qbs are still there the Bills will draft him. -
Make the Buffalo Bills great again, draft Mahomes. Dude seriously has it all...talent, competitiveness, drive, smarts, hard working. If we can draft EJ at #16 (a QB even I had reservations about), Mahomes looks 100 times the better prospect. We have Taylor to start in 2017 and give Mahomes a full year to develop, let's do this!

If you had to choose 1 out of the 10, who would it be?
1billsfan replied to gr8billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My thoughts have changed a lot this draft season. I'm still leaning towards the drafting of Mahomes, but next year's QB class looks like a very good one. Hopefully, the guy they draft will be a huge part of the turnaround everyone has been waiting for...and healthy! LOL -

It was Allen, not Adams who has the injury concerns. As for the other guys (including Allen), if it were something that lingers or seems ongoing, like hamstrings (Lattimore) or concussions (Foster). No, I'm not taking them. Yes, they may be great players, but what good are they if they can't get on the field? I think injuries to big top 10 type of players are the biggest story that's not getting much coverage in this draft. There seems to be a lot of round one players who are injured. If the Bills are passing on a potential franchise QB, they had better feel real good that the player they're drafting is ready to produce right away like OJ Howard. Probably the best thing to do would be to trade back with a team willing to gamble on a great prospect who falls due to injury concerns. -

Do you realize that 4 out of the 6 players you mentioned have injury concerns? I just don't think the Bills are going to take a player with injury concerns because of Watkins, Lawson and Ragland. If a high rated player drops who has these kind of issues, then I'd suspect they'd either trade out or take the healthiest player they have rated the highest. -
if no QB is taken in the top 9... do you?
1billsfan replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd take Mahomes at #10 not only because he has the great talent, but he also has competitiveness, the right personality and the love of the game. You get that kind of combination, and you start feeling comfortable that he's not the boom/bust risk the "experts" say. His floor starts looking like Dalton, while his ceiling is Favre. Draft him and sit him for the year regardless. Develop him the right way. You're an NFL afterthought until you get the QB, and whichever "elite" non-QB player you draft now, the chances are great that player won't be here in five years while the Bills are still looking for their franchise QB. -
Oh geez, my bad! Forget what I said. LOL

I don't see any way where the Browns will be drafting another QB from Texas Tech after the Manziel debacle. While it's totally unfair to Mahomes, it would no doubt be a hard sell to say the least for that franchise to take another crack at it. I'm sure Jackson is talking him up because he wants Mahomes to be picked ahead of their #12 pick in hopes that their preferred, "more ready" QB will be there.
-
I'm 100% with ya. Further in regards to Mahomes, from now until the draft, in the NFL media specifically, you will hear all sorts of reasons why Mahomes would be a reach or how crazy it would be for a team to draft him in the top 10. Yet if he were selected by the Cardinals at #13 it would get a total pass because of the love for Arians. If he were picked by the Giants, Steelers or Chiefs, it would be seen as a fantastic pick because he'll be the next franchise QB for that team in a year or two. If he's picked by the Texans, well, they needed a QB and he's got the highest ceiling...again, great pick! But we're talking about the QB position here...in the NFL...where the importance of the position to the success of an NFL franchise is about 70-80%. So knowing this, why would the spot where Mahomes was drafted in the 1st round even matter? The NFL media shouldn't be able to have it both ways. They can't love the pick to the Cardinals, but hate the pick to the Bills three spots earlier. Same for the other teams I mentioned, because of the huge importance of the position. If he'd be a great for the Giants, he should be a great pick for the Bills. My advice is to tune out the NFL media when it comes to talking about QBs, and Mahomes in particular. Because they talk out of both sides of their mouths and it seems like in mock drafts they're rooting for certain QBs to go to the places they want them to go to....and Buffalo is not a place where they want them to draft a great QB.

Trying the ol' process of elimination re: the draft
1billsfan replied to blacklabel's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think there will be very few trades this draft because there's so much depth at many positions. GMs who trade away picks will catch a TON of heat in this draft. That being said, the Bills are in a very good position at #10 to add a pick or two in a trade down scenario to a team that's looking for a QB which has falling to the Bills spot (if they don't want that QB for themselves of course). If they don't go QB, I see the Bills going LB in the 1st right now, because they will probably feel like they can draft a very good CB in the 2nd and a very good WR in the 3rd round. -
Prospect Watch: Mitch Trubisky QB, UNC
1billsfan replied to Maury Ballstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the Niners are either going to make a trade for or wait a year for Cousins. I think they go defense, but.....I read a crazy CBS mock draft yesterday that had the Browns (who have a ton of picks the next two years) trading up from 12 to get Trubisky kind of how the Rams went from 15 to 1 for Goff last year. At first it sounds crazy, then it starts making sense if they feel he's the real deal. I'm sure the Niners would love to grab a bunch of picks and they play in different conferences. I think that Trubisky getting to the Bills is a pipe dream. Even if he did get past the Jets, the Browns have more than enough picks to trade for teams picking ahead of the Bills that would be wanting to add draft picks in a deep draft. So IMO that might leave Mahomes as the only QB option at #10. Watson seems like very limited QB who doesn't see the whole field and has accuracy issues, and Kizer's play looks too much like EJ's style. I'm thinking the Bills probably won't be picking a QB this year and will instead either trade back or pick their top guy that falls to them like Adams, Hooker, Howard, Wiliams, Foster. -
Prospect Watch: Mitch Trubisky QB, UNC
1billsfan replied to Maury Ballstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
After giving Trubisky a longer look, I'm starting to come around to him being the Bills' QB at #10. I think the Bills are done trying to turn west coast guys into Buffalonians. The free agent signings tell a tale of north east/east coast guys with a Chicago guy mixed in (Holmes). The signs start to point that way. All the top 2018 QBs are west coast guys. Maholmes is a Texan who comes from a weird college system and Watson can't read the whole field so why would they take him when that's their current bridge QB's biggest problem. Sean McDermott was entrenched in Carolina for years and I'm sure he feels he's got very good knowledge if Trubisky has the skills to become a franchise QB. Round 1: Trubisky Round 2: Godwin (Penn State fits the Bills new geographic approach, plus Pagula would love it) -
The know that they need a franchise QB, so it's... 1. Take a QB at #10 or after trading back 2. Let's see how Cardale develops this year because they see that potential 3. 2018 draft that looks like it's going to be very good If they don't pick one this year, then at least there's the other two options. The big problem, or "what if", is are you passing on a real NFL star QB in Mahomes. That's the thing.

How empty of a feeling would it be to see the Bills draft their #2 WR replacement of Woods, while the Cardinals get their future franchise QB only three spots later... http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2017/3/28/15091152/2017-nfl-mock-draft-sb-nation-bloggers-picks Tyrod Taylor is not the answer. The prospect of the Bills being the Bills and getting the QB decision wrong yet again is on the table in this draft.
-
I don't think this is a "2013 QB draft class" situation though where there just weren't any QBs worth a 1st round pick. Mahomes, Watson and even Trubisky are solid 1st round QB prospects. Are they back half of the draft 1st rounder QBs? Probably...but if you're the Bills, the old saying "beggars can't be choosers" comes into play. Also the saying, "don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good". Picking QBs is a risky game, but you have to do it if you ever want to land one. The Bills can look at the situation as being half full, in that at #10 they might have their choice of the top three QBs prospects and teams like the Saints, Cardinals, Redskins, Texans (or Jets if they trade back) would have to deal picks in a draft that's deep with talent.
-
Passing over Mahomes or Watson for a LB would take a WHOLE LOT of guts. First rule of the NFL draft is: You need a good QB to have any hope. Second rule of the NFL draft is: You need a good QB to have any hope. Third rule of the NFL draft is: It’s not the 1950s anymore, you don’t draft a LB in the first round. Fourth rule of the NFL draft is: You need a good QB to have any hope.

McDermott says WR2 is already on the roster
1billsfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tampa moved on from Freeman, Titans moved on from Locker, Jaguars moved on from Gabbert, Vikings moved on from Ponder. Life moves on, the league moves on, the Bills need a talented rookie QB to develop behind Taylor this season. -

1billsfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Taylor is clearly a bridge QB and they only have Jones as a backup right now. They didn't sign any veteran as a backup. That makes QB at #10 the obvious pick to me, depending on if the QB or QBs they feel has a good shot at becoming a franchise QB. -
So what, it says that Mahomes is a real QB who was trusted to pass the ball a ton, while Nassib was nothing more than a game managing QB...in college. Not to mention, Mahomes is being looked at by about 18 NFL teams. Nassib probably only had about 4 or 5 interested teams. Your comparison is way off.
-
Except that Mahomes had 40 more TDs (passing/rushing), over 2000 more yards passing, and a 20 point higher QB rating in 15 less games played.

LOL, you better not read this glowing in-depth write up from a Chiefs site... http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2017/3/24/15022108/know-your-draft-crush-patrick-mahomes "Those types of throws have nothing to do with being in a certain type of offense or facing poor competition. Making a pinpoint pass 30 yards down the field is something most NFL quarterbacks don’t do regardless of a clean pocket. It’s a tough thing to do. Additionally, Mahomes did that kind of thing WHILE under pressure quite often, which is incredibly rare at any level." The draft is so far away, I'm expecting that by the time it arrives, expectations will become that Mahomes will be picked way before #10. So I'm starting to read up more on Watson, so I can have a fall back QB to get excited about who has other potentially great qualities like twice schooling Alabama's defense on the biggest stage. If both are gone, then I hope they trade back for a 1st rd 2018 draft pick (looking to be a great QB draft class and you'd have two 1st rd picks to deal with a team picking very high).
