  1. Prior to his impeachment, I understand he was one of the most popular presidents ever- winning his second term by a landslide. I am sure just like any other president, he had his share of things- both good and bad.

Yeah...but he actually was never impeached. He resigned first, in humiliation. Can you imagine Clinton or Bush ever feeling humiliation enough to step down?

  2. It's a shame people don't know, or remember, or want to acknowledge Nixon's accomplishments. He effectively ended American involvement in Vietnam, opened relations with China, initiated detente with the Ruskies, abolished the gold standard, to protect the dollar, was a peace maker in the Middle East, and helped keep the peace between India and Pakistan. He took economic steps to curb inflation, implemented anti-crime measures, successfully accelerated desegregation, and reformed welfare. Started EPA, OSHA, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Reorganized the Post Office, implemented the first significant federal affirmative action program. Started the Space shuttle program......

Other presidents have caused more damage than Nixon. Unless you're referring to the fact that tons of Woodward and Bernstein inspired young people rushed to journalism schools, to later turn the once respectable profession into what it is today?

  3. Does anyone else here see the irony of Nancy Grace railing on the idea of Casey Anthony having to sell anything she owns, including pictures of her dead daughter, Kaley, to help fund her defense? I mean, Nancy grace has been making hay off this story for many months. If she isn't exploiting, who is? Pompous Ass. Hypocrite!! It speaks to the rest of our world more than anything. Duke Lacrosse Team members, weigh in.

  4. That assumes that the bridges and roads are being built in response to market forces and not in a whimsical effort to drive them. Sprucing up Buffalo's metro system is not going to cause companies to locate there.

Yes I agree with you; you are right. Market forces are of great relevance. Wisdom is still a necessary ingredient into where and how the money should be spent. I don't know what's going to fix western NY. On the bright side, it's now pretty easy to get around.

  5. At the end of the day, if you just create a jobs works program we are not really solving the problem. Yes, you will have more people employed for a short period of time but no real product was produced. After a road is built, or a bridge repaired, what future value or revenue will that asset bring? Nothing. To sustain an economy we need to invest in companies that will actual produce a product that other people will purchase. That is why tax breaks to corporations and small businesses are vital. If these businesses have more capital and profit making ability, people will start to invest in these businesses again due to potential gains.

The other part of this problem that know one is talking about is our deficit. Our government must cut spending and cut it fast. We can not afford these social and entitlement programs. Look at California, it's a total mess because they fund everything for everyone. People in the higher income brackets can not keep paying the bill for people who do not contribute to the society.

It comes down to the principle of freedom, liberty, and the respect of private property. Once these inalienable rights are taken away by the government, we have tyranny.

    Thomas Jefferson:

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

The founding fathers on wealth redistribution:

Roads and bridges and transportation infrastructure is a good long term investment for the overall heath of business. All businesses that move goods and services will need this, and they won't build them themselves. I've said it before, let government do the work the free market system will not take care of, and let government do what it does best, build roads and fight wars. And carry the mail.

  6. I keep seeing people talk about tax cuts, more tax cuts. We need tax cuts to put more money in people's pockets so they'll start spending. Now a tax incentive to buy a new car. Here's my concerns, that I haven't really seen addressed:

If I don't have a job, how's a tax cut or tax incentive going to get me spending money when I have none coming in? How can I buy a car when no one is giving me a loan to buy the car (or house)?

Yes it seems a tax cut should or could be part of a stimulus plan, but it seems like it should be a smaller portion of the plan. It seems like job creation should be the focus; then once everyone has a job, we could worry about cutting their taxes.

    What am I missing?

Without knowing for sure what's in the current plan, I'm guessing the tax cuts include cuts that will also help small businesses, not just giant widget makers. Big business is great, but small businesses have been the backbone of this country for a while, even after the success of the Walmarts. Small business owners employ more than half of us. And they are fearsome entrepreneurs. Tax cuts worked when Kennedy employed them, when Reagan employed them, and even when George W employed them. But to make it work, we still need hope...

  7. Hugh Thompson Jr. is a name that should be taught in every history class- he did something that was very unpopular at the time, risked everything by violating chain of command, but is the definition of what a war hero really is.

Through all the hell that most of us will never know, he kept his morals and his dignity. It is a shame so few know who he was. I can only hope that I would have the fortitude to be like him. Unfortunately, I am not so sure I could

Well at least they named a helicopter after him...and a machine gun.

  8. Seriously for anyone who's boated, when you bail out something. It typically means you are removing something unwanted (water). We should be removing things from the budget, getting higher and lighter on the water. Not taking more on.

Yet the idiots seem to this this bailout would be best to throw more water onto the boat. Bad government regulations, bad policies, bad everything, and now we want to do it on a grander scale.

Again, back to the boat analogy, we're screwed.

I think Castro coined the term when he took over Cuba. :wallbash:

  9. B-)

Right, the right never bitches about taxes being higher for the rich, the liberal courts are the reason for keeping America free since that pisses them off and God is being taken out of society.

Anyway, This was a faked crash. It works now because they fixed it and the plan was to only have it down for a little while anyway.

Uhmm, anyway, so, you believe they faked the site crash? Why? A publicity stunt? How does this help them win an election? I mean, I have no idea. It just doesn't seem like a plan that would do them any good. How is it you know their plan? Did they tell you?

  10. A) You must not fly very often, because you'd really have a hissy fit about the airport

    B) You keep complaining about the police report.....there wouldn't BE a police report if you didn't go into a tizzy about getting checked out at what pretty much amounts to a police checkpoint. Would you freak out if you came to an intersection in your car and 5 cop cars were there for a DWI checkpoint? Would you complain to the chief that your rights were violated because the cop shined a flashlight into your car, wanted to see ID, and asked if you had been drinking? I mean...what a stupid question.....drinking? How dare he.......he should know that I was coming home from work from my closing shift at Bed Bath and Beyond....the nerve of those pigs. Well.....if there were 5 cops on a beat, there are problems in that area and they were going to check it out.

    C) Your clothes speak volumes. Preppy boy in polo shirt and leather jacket walking alone in crap neighborhood could very well ring alarm bells that you are looking to score some drugs. You see....a crack addict that lives on the streets is no good to the system to bring in. He is just going to tie up money and manpower from the city. You have to house him...feed him....get a lawyer for him....who needs that crap for a guy down on his luck having a little poke? But here we have a young 20 something all prepped up and out of place. What you are wearing says you have money, and if you have money you probably have a job and/or a reputation to protect...and you are willing to go to court with your own lawyer, get the cops some court time, and be willing to plea down a minor possesion count to a slap on the wrist and a tasty fine.

I hate an abuse of power as much as the next guy, but maybe the fact that there were 5 cops working the same area at freaking 8 oclock as you say it was....might be a sign that you should invest in a $5 cab ride when coming home. Just the fact that you started this topic with such outrage is reason enough to believe the police picked up on your vile for them in the first place and may have asked a few more questions for the heck of it.

I'm 52. It's not a crap neighborhood. What else could your imagination and speculation be wrong about. It does no good to make stuff up and then comment. To a degree, it appears that this an affluent retirement community that can afford a robust police force to handle what little crime it actually has. The five cops was the second time, about 10:20. Did I say police report? The officer on the phone said documentation. Now is that something they put together after I complained? I don't know. This has never happened to me anywhere at any time in my life. So, I'm sure it's me. Like I said before, I am done discussing this here. I am handling it. I will make it stop. My outrage is only heightened by ignorant defense of police misconduct. And if your are going to continue make stuff up for the sake of arguing some unrelated issue, you will no longer get a response from me. The question that I originally had was basically should I make an issue of the time. I've decided not to. It's curious that you know that that cab ride from my point A to point B would have cost exactly $5. Where are you located?

  11. Again, thanks to those of you that gave sincere thoughtful insight and advice. It was helpful.

PPP didn't disappoint. A smattering of useful information mixed with acid and clown responses. But just enough good stuff to make it worth it. Kinda like sticking your hand in a toilet to get a quarter.

  12. Who do you respect more, police officers or women?

Every individual one at a time. Some deserve respect. Some absolutely do not. Some have yet to earn it. Some never will. Who was really the one treated with extraordinary disrespect those evenings? It was absurd for them to think I was looking for sex on the street while walking home at a brisk pace. Everyone deserves a basic level of respect until proven otherwise. When you are given authority and abuse it, and cover it up, you lose respect and excuses don't make up the difference overnight.

  13. By the looks of it, you may give off an angry, paranoid vibe to the cops.

One question...if you were walking, what "every cranny" did they search? Clothes? Backpack?

OK....2 more questions.....what type of clothes were you wearing, and were you within a few blocks of a church when they stopped you?

Backpack? Dude, I was at dinner, not camping. Clothes? They frisked me and searched my wallet. What's that about? Are there not illegal search and seizure laws? I said OK sure, I've got nothing to hide. It was weird, irritating and humiliating, especially the second time. Different cops I think. Not sure; there were two the first timem four of five the second time. It was still cold in early January. Probably wearing jeans and one of my polo shirts and my black leather coat (Seventh Avenue). There are quite a few churches in this town. I believe there is one under construction several blocks down from where I was stopped the first time. Both times I asked what's up. I tried to be friendly. I was treated like dirt. And they lied on their reports about the time. Explain that. That's really my big question at this point. I was satisfied with what the Commander said except for that. Why change the time? I can't believe this is professional police work. Maybe I should bounce this off some of my cousins or uncles who have worked in law enforcement. These cops were all very young. It takes me twenty to twenty five minutes to walk from "the grill" to my front door at a steady pace. I was not arrested, just harassed and talked to with attitude and disrespect. Part of the area is our black part of town. I get the feeling they do what they want and get away with it.
