Hold on college football fans...a whole lotta shakin goin on
sullim4 replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Rutgers would get them the NYC market, that's why I included them. Pitt overlaps a lot of the PSU market anyway, I'm not sure what that would get them beyond what you mentioned. I don't see how you can have Michigan, Michigan St, Ohio State, Penn State, and Notre Dame in different divisions. There will be mandates to see these teams play each other every year - ND already plays UM and MSU every year, UM plays all 4 most years, so does MSU. Ohio State and PSU are the eastern most teams in the conference now - you can't stick them in a division with Nebraska and Missouri. While it might not matter for football and basketball, it will matter for smaller sports where you have athletes that focus more on the academic side of things and less on athletics. Of course, this all goes out the window if they somehow weasel Texas to join them instead of bolting for the Pac 10. -

I think something like this would work for the Big 10 if they expanded to 16 (and the Big East fell apart): East: Penn State Ohio State Michigan Michigan State Indiana Purdue Notre Dame Rutgers OR Syracuse (depending on whether they value FB or BB more) West: Wisconsin Iowa Minnesota Nebraska Missouri Illinois Northwestern One other Big 12 team. Kansas? -
Holy cow Roenick looks like he's going to lose it!

What a joke - Flyers fans just embarassed their city with that performance during the post game. Bettman is an idiot, yes, boo him, but don't boo the Smythe winner and the Blackhawks.

Yeah, the quotes I got were outrageous - over a thousand dollars. They're going to donate it to the yard sale the K of C is putting on. I'll stick it out a few more years with my dryer. Thanks all for the advice!
-
My parents are re-doing their kitchen. Their old kitchen has a laundry area directly off of it that has a very old washer, but a relatively new dryer (< 1 yr old). Their redesign has them gutting the laundry area and putting the washer and dryer into cabinets inside the kitchen, so they need to buy a dryer that will fit. This leaves them with a pretty new dryer. It just so happens the dryer in my place is ancient and it'd be a nice upgrade. How much would it cost to ship this thing from NYS to Washington state? I'm seeing several hundred dollars, which seems ridiculous, so they might end up donating the dryer instead. However, I was just curious if I was missing something. Thanks!

Do you want to force law abiding citizens to blow into a device to start a car, then blow 5 minutes later, and then blow on every half hour? I don't. -

sullim4 replied to Fezmid's topic in Off the Wall Archives
The problem is that someone else with "clean" breath can just blow into it, rendering it useless. Granted, they force the convicts to blow into it every few minutes, but do you really want to force that requirement on law abiding citizens? -

I'm all for personal liberties but when you infringe on my right to drive safely then you need to be punished for that to make sure you don't do it again. I don't see any issues with this. -

Buddy Nix radio interview
sullim4 replied to San Jose Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The most interesting thing in this interview was his dig at the previous administration - how can you cut your LT, offensive coordinator, and put AVP in charge a week before the season starts? -
WOW, both are available!!!!

Bills 2nd round pick should be......
sullim4 replied to papazoid's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Should be or will be? They are not going to draft based on need. Nix has made that clear. If Clausen is available I bet they take him and I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade up to do so if it will cost a fourth rounder or less. I'm convinced that McCoy's boneheaded play in the Big XII championship that nearly cost his team the game is etched in the minds of GMs who now question his football IQ. -
It drew me in, and seemed to do the same for you!

Anyone ever take a cross country trip?
sullim4 replied to Captain Hindsight's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I did this in 2006 with an old friend when I moved out here from Poughkeepsie. My route: I-84/I-81/I-80 I-80 through PA, OH, IN to Chicago. I-55 down to St. Louis I-70 through Kansas City to Denver. I-25/I-80 to Salt Lake I-15 to I-84 through Boise and the Blue Mountains I-82 to I-90 to where I am now. Lots of great things to see on that route. -
I've heard that the NFL is going to change their officiating mechanics to place the umpire in the offensive backfield, starting with next season. This is due to concerns around injuries sustained by umpires this season. Personally I hope this information is wrong. I think this is a disaster waiting to happen. The U needs to be where he is for several reasons - to be better able to see holding infractions, to help the wing officials spot the ball, and to get it ready for play. The U has a 5-10 yard head start following a gain by being in the defensive backfield. During end-of-half situations, it's going to take them a whole lot longer to mark the ball ready for play since the U will have to travel a good 10 yards more to the ball, and consequently you'll see teams lose out on one or two plays. They tested this change in a prior preseason and it turned out horribly. Let's hope they figure that out again.

Watch yourself there, Pothier is an RPI alum. As much as the hockey team sucks we tend to defend our own.

NFL Comp Committee to examine Sudden Death Rule
sullim4 replied to The Big Cat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Here's a novel idea: Why not allow ties after 4 quarters? Why is a tie such a bad thing? It would encourage teams to go for two and not kick field goals during regulation. In the case of the playoffs, why not just keep playing full 15:00 quarters until the game is NOT tied at the end of one? -
Question about tipping at restaurants.....
sullim4 replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Tipping - I almost always double the tax and round up to the nearest dollar. At 9.5% out here that usually works out to more than 20%. I usually have a "minimum" tip when I visit a cheapo place like an ihop or similar local establishment, which is typically $4 unless the service was awful, in which case I'll adjust accordingly. Servers earn larger tips from me if they keep my beverage filled and are actually visible if I need something. Too many of them stay in the kitchen for five minutes when I run out of something like bread, ketchup, cocktail sauce, whatever. Pickup - never, the only exception being a place like Outback that'll take it out to your car, when I'll usually leave $2. Another note. I NEVER complain about my meal. Ever - I've been brought the wrong thing and I'll still eat it... but I've never been in a situation where a completely different entree has been brought out. I've read about and heard too many horror stories with chefs and wait staff retaliating against complainers that I simply won't do it. -
The Official USA Olympic Hockey Thread
sullim4 replied to Simon's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Oh please. You're a BILLS fan and you're talking smack before it's over? I've been burned far too many times in the past. -
I live in the Puget Sound area and kinda made it a day trip. Stayed overnight in Burlington, WA, which is along I-5. That allowed me to get up there early to meet a friend who lives in Richmond, park my car, hop on the skytrain, and check things out. No wait at the border, but the US CBP officer coming back was a royal jackass, taking issue that I as a US citizen would associate with someone from Canada. Not sure what that has to do with determining my citizenship or duty owed... It was definitely crowded in the afternoon (not at all in the morning) but I didn't think prices were outrageous. Cheaper than NYC for sure.

And with respect to the whole NBC debacle... As someone who works in the tech industry, it pisses me off to see what amounts to censorship online. NBC is taking pages out of China's book by blocking access to content. The good old USA is the only country in the world where you don't have access to live feeds of every Olympic event online, which tells me that this is NBC's doing, not the IOC's. If anything, this should be proof positive that Comcast cannot be trusted to own the means of production (NBC) and the pipe to deliver it (the cable operation), because soon enough, it'll be required that you subscribe to their services in order to access any content at all. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really hope that ABC/ESPN will get the rights to the games post-2012, when NBC's contract expires. They have enough capacity (ABC, ESPNHD, ESPN2HD, ESPNNewsHD, ESPNU HD) to show multiple live events, in high definition, in real-time. Their coverage of MNF this year has shown that they can listen to criticism and actually cover the sport itself instead of blab about unrelated nonsense. NBC, on the other hand, has not.
