Your 53 Man Roster and Practice Squad...
Matt in KC replied to Astrobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thanks for the thought-filled response! I'd agree with you about Rogers and Corto, except for the depth chart, which lists no one behind Byrd at free safety but Corto (and Joshua Nesbitt) *gulp*. Also, there's a big difference carrying 4 safeties if we had Donte instead of Searcy in terms of quality. We appear to be short one CB if they drop Rogers, and another if like me you think Corner is a liability. As far as your Huggins comment goes... I like him too, but would you really want to keep him instead of Aiken? I think he's serviceable, but already near his performance ceiling. -

I think your list is pretty close. Just curious: why Justin Rogers instead of Corto? Corto has been very good on special teams and seeing how raw Searcy looks keeping just 3 others seems pretty "thin". I agree, looking at who we'd have to cut, I can't see Jasper making the team. Also, it's hard to justify Wang making the team. He was was "only" a 5th round pick last year. I'd risk trying to move him to the PS. I know other teams do not have film of him looking good.... I could also really see Eddins making the PS. -
Who is everyones surprise cut?

I was kidding. I just went back and added a note since two people didn't "get it". -
Great topic. I agree with all the guys you list except Heard. I haven't noticed him since the first PS game when he really stood out (though in the 3rd and 4th quarters). I've read good things about his in TBD though, so hope he makes the PS. With his size, he looks to me like a better alternative to Jasper for the PS. I would add Merriman to this list. I was not expecting him to look so good, especially right out of the gate. Wow, I'm impressed! Also very pleasantly surprised by Roosevelt in camp, and Aiken's progress.

Sorry, I had no idea this would get so long until I just fiished and looked at what I put down.... Little to no suprise Shawn Nelson - I can't beleive he hasn't progressed by now. I was so looking forward to a TE with good hands once he learned to block, but it's very difficult to justify giving him more time Heard Jasper - the surprise could be that he's not invited to the Practice Squad if they like Heard better Ruvell Martin McCargo He continues to be invisible on the defense [i'm kidding!] Felton Huggins - Shows promise but the competition is all as good or is bigger and shows more promise (Aiken). He's the guy who gets the call late in the season to join the team from his couch if we have a rash of injuries. Not much of a surprise Buster Davis Wang - not enough shown, and better to give others the roster spot. I know he's young. Thaty's why he's here instead of the list above Mansfield Wrotto Cordaro Howard Kamar Aiken The kid is huge and starting to show flashes. He's already shown more than James Hardy ever did . If he's cut, the Bills will be lucky to get him to their PS IMO. Surprise Cuts Corey McIntyre - If Bills decide to go without a FB this year. I think they'd add another RB, at least to the PS in additiona to Jackson/Spiller/White. I'd love to see Joique Bell cut by the Saints and added by the Bills Naaman Roosevelt - Great training camp, but injury, good performances by the competition, lack of roster spots and PS eligibility could make him the last Bill cut. Antonio Coleman - in favor of giving the roster spot to Moats (I know one's playing inside, the other outside) Arthur Moats - in favor of giving the roster spot to Coleman (I know one's playing inside, the other outside). He outplayed Coleman last year, but not this year so far. Chris White They might think with his injury and lack of preseason film on him they can get him to the PS Reggie Corner Maybe belongs in the section above. While he occasionally has a good play, I think he takes risks and is just not consistent enough, and is not going to develop much more. I think he's usually our weak link when on the field. Shocking but possible Geoff Hangartner Thigpen I haven't been impressed, but he's coming in late. I think this is only a possibility if they like another QB out there, likely a veteran. no way is it Brad Smith or Levi Brown after Fitz on the depth chart Searcy I think the kid gets more time and likely won't be exposed to waivers as a 4th round pick, but I haven't been impressed at all. I think his try at punt returns ahas been horrible and is another reason I would be shocked if Roscoe was let go. Okay, I'm moving Roscoe to the no way section... David Nelson I think he's solid and the Bills really like him, but there's a hard cut coming at WR and I can't quite say this is impossible, though I'd think they'd sooner cut and try to PS Aiken and/or Roosevelt. One significant WR injury and I don't think any of these guys are on my list. Kelsay Shocking because they just extended him, not shocking because of his (new high) salary and the progress of the other defenders. Mentioned by others, but no way Roscoe - I would be very very surprised if he was cut given what the coaches have said about him, but I can see the pressure from the other WRs to make the roster too. I can't quite say "no way" but it's close... Never mind. No way. Bell - No way, unless he brings a gun to work and actually fires it. McGee - A starting CB who is a natural playmaker. Are you crazy? I think he's our best DB in man coverage. McKelvin - A starting CB who can be a playmaker at times. Are you crazy? Torell Troup He's making good progress Spencer Johnson I would have had him on my list of possible cuts at the start of training camp, but not now. He looks 10-20 lbs bigger and stronger to me, mostly around the chest, and looks like a great D-Line rotation guy. Bryan Scott No way are our safeties only Wilson, Byrd, Searcy and Corto. If we had to, we'd lose Searcy or Crto, but I don't see that happening -
So, do you think we should try him as an ILB, or a splitter-up-the-middler rusher? Why not just bring in a Sumo wrestler to play this role or a strong midget little person who could be thrown over the line at the QB or RB as soon as the ball is snapped?

Crud, I can't find it either, and now think I'm remembering wrong. I now think (but no longer trust myself) that the conversation was about Roosevelt, not Huggins. That said, I think Naaaman has earned a spot on the team with a great training camp. But, he could still be the odd one out to the PS if they try to keep Aiken. -
We know what happened on the Bills. For the Colts and Eagles he was brought in mid-season until their players healed. It's more a complement that those good teams saw something in him than a concern that they let him go. The Colts claimed him off waivers the day after the Eagles let him go, then the Easgles picked him up again two days after the Colts let him go.

I think the best way to get Jasper on the team is to get him proficient enough at a single position that he can play at the NFL level. It's bizarre to recommend any position will get him there faster than one he's already played. And yes, I think it would be great if we had a big strong run-plugger on our defence. But really, he's got a better chance of making the team as an offensive lineman than ILB, and the best chance of all getting better at his current position. Why start over? (This is rhetorical.)
-
I really like Bell, at least as well as J. White (who I also like). He's a punishing runner who can catch and juke just enough to get some big plays. I'd be fine having him on the team if we aren't using a FB and cut McIntyre, who I also like, btu haven't really seen or hear about so far this year.

Why is he not eligible? I thought this was discussed in a thread 2-3 weeks ago and he was one game shy of the limit, and was therefore still eligible. -

You say 10 DBs, but only list 9. Did you mean to cut Corto? -
Yeah, it's too bad. I really thought Nelson could be special in a year or two (now) when he learned to block.
-
I think you're right, and I agree with the OP. I think Aiken could become a very good WR, but don't see how we can keep him, barring injury. I just don't see us keeping 7 WRs or him getting the nod over the others. Maybe if Roosevelt is healthy and plays next week and Aiken has a much much better game, but I doubt it.... On a similar line of thought, I see no chance of Buster Davis making the final 53. If I had to choose, I'd rather Aiken make it to our PS than Jasper.

I'm not sure what argument you feel like you're winning or supporting. Are you saying Kelsay was the worst player on the Bills last year and you'd rather the defense plays with 10 players, really? I don't think Kelsay is great, and wouldn't be shocked to see him get cut due to his salary. And, I'd love to see Carrington get more snaps with the starters, but am not sure he's replacing Kelsay. Batten too is showing good progress.... Purely based on current talent (ignoring salary) Kelsay belongs on the roster for sure. That said, I'm excited by the "kids" coming up on our defense and do think Kelsay's time with the Bills is starting to come to an end. When they were both here, I liked Denney better than Kelsay. While not as strong, Denney had longer arms and was much better in coverage and at batting the ball.

Could Andre Gurode Help our O-Line?
Matt in KC replied to Matt in KC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is close to where I am. If Urbik looked like he was developing I'd be more interested in giving him time. At this point he just looks passable. If he's not the future, then yes, I'd much rather bring in a solid vet that could help us win, teach the kids, and help instill a winning attitude, even on a 1-2 year deal. I'll be frank, when I started this topic I didn't realise he was 32 years old. I thought he was more somewhere 28-30 and it was a no-brainer to bring him in on a couple year deal, if available. Time flies! -
First off, Dute didn't say starter, he said I thought Kelsay was much better and bigger impact than Stroud and Maybin last year to start with. I also thought he added much more to the team than Ellison, Corner or Youboty, Torbor, Coleman, our TEs, several players that played on our o-line, Spenser Johnson.... I'm not a big Kelsay supporter, but saying any starter is the worst player on the team (and really, I mean it, this is not a joke) is just absurd. He was one of our worse starters for sure. Yes, you're right he's one of the worst starters still on the team. Those last three qualifiers are important (1. one of the worst 2. starter 3. still on the team) I'm kind of low on Pears, Byrd, Corner and even Moorman (hesitate to put him here, but underwhelmed for last 1.5 yers) right now. I think playing in the 4-3 Kelsay is as good or better than the first three, though it's odd to compare across positions and Pears and Byrd are still getting better.

Gurode article at NFL.com First off, I know this is very likely just posturing/pressure and there's not much chance the Cowboys will cut Gurode. Still, I found these statements by Jones to be pretty amazing. I'd expect Gerode to just flatly say no to any request to reduce his salary. Would the Cowboys really consider sutting him? If the Cowboys did cut Gurode, do you think he could help the Bills o-line, or would it be better for the Bills to stick with their own youth movement?
-
Kelsay has not nearly been the worst player on the team for years. I don't mind some hyperbole, but to follow that with "Im being completely serious about that too" is just annoying. I've been impressed with Carrington this PS too and think he's earned some snaps in real games.
-
I'm not sure if Huggins has PS eligibility left. If not then I think Hubbard is the new Huggins. And Huggins was the new Justin Jenkins; Jenkins the new ..?..; ..?.. the new Drew Haddad etc. (practice squad parade...) I think the big question is if they try to PS Aiken. I see him developing, and he has great size. Unlike some of the others, I think he'll quickly grow into a very good NFL receiver. I love watching the young guys come along and get a chance to earn a place in the NFL. Right now my preference for the Bills developmental players to keep is: Top Kamar Aiken Kellen Heard Michael Jasper Felton Huggins Paul Hubbard Bottom I could see any of the top 3 of those guys not makign it to, or being taken off of our PS.

Which is the better seat location?
Matt in KC replied to BUFFALOKIE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Everyone has their own preference. I'd prefer to be behind the Bills bench on the lower level about 15 rows up so you can see over the players during plays and see/hear them between plays. Here's the Arrowhead seating chart. If you click and hold on a section it shows the view of the field from mid-section. I'm very excited to have tickets at the front of section 346 (purchased off Craig's List). http://www.kcchiefs.com/tickets/seating.html -
There seems to be some indication he actually signed now. Morrison not expected to play Morrison is #58 This definitely sounds like an upgrade!

Places to eat/drink/have fun in Kansas City
Matt in KC replied to Xbolt2506's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I'll echo CookieG and say it sounds like you're looking for the Power and Light district. There are a lot of places to choose from and all walkable. You can get some great food, or a casual sports bar right next to each other in an area with a nice sense of "place" if that makes sense. Power and Light District Other misc feedback: I agree with what the others have posted. Public transportation is not very good, and cabs are not inexpensive here. It's a car culture and the city is pretty sperad out. I'd definitely recommend renting a car if you want to go anywhere besides from the airport to lodging (and of course to the game). About a half mile north from P&L (at approx 5th and Main) is the City Market with a variety of shops, restaurants with outdoor seating, antique shops, and farmers / flea market. Both are fun places to spend some time and really feel like you're in KC. There are a lot of great choices for BBQ. I love Oklahoma Joe's and Gates, but I bet there are 100 places to try around the city. If you go to City market I recommend Winslow's KC-Style City Market Barbecue if it's a nice day to sit outside. You may think I'm crazy now, but definitely order the fried green beans! Winslows is a simple inexpensive bar/BBQ joint with outdoor seating, tasty BBQ and cold beer, with a lot going on right around it.
