  1. The "!@#$ing point" is that in a 16-game season you can't possibly attribute wins above replacement to single players. It works in baseball because you have a 162-game season. Even then, the marginal WAR upgrades of role players, where said upgrades are very incremental, tend to add up and be as meaningful as those of the star players.
  2. I'll say this about Orton (+ Hackett + co). I was on him for not getting the ball to Watkins last week. Clearly they worked to do so this time around. I think a few plays to him might have made a big difference last week. Hopefully that relationship continues to flourish.
  3. I would love it. So is short-term IR only applicable to a guy who has been injured in TC /pre-season? Or could it apply here? I think they can't afford to waste a roster spot on him but it would certainly be great to have the option to bring him back. As Rubes says, this looks like the worst kind of collarbone injury, so I wouldn't expect him back on the short side of the recovery time.
  4. I'd settle for a new HC and offensive coordinator.
  5. Bingo. And we have an owner who isn't going to be afraid to pay for them, if the GM is smart enough to identify and court the right ones.
  6. It's long been my opinion that he opens up plays for the other DLmen, but I didn't see enough today to back that up, for today's game.
  7. Wow. A groin injury for a man his age, playing his sport, probably merits more time out. I'm not a doctor, but I hope he isn't back until he is close to 100%. That's what Brown is here for, and if Spiller is going to be IR'd or short-term IR'd, there's going to be a spot for a third back open anyway. I want to see Fred be useful in the playoffs (!).
  8. Hughes and Dareus are incredibly valuable to this team. I hope the FO is smart enough to keep them here for a while. That's how we train them up in Buffalo. It's been that way for years. It's part of their manifesto: "How to get shredded by the screen and learn to love losing."
  9. And this is why it gets really tiring to hear about how awesome this skin-of-the-teeth win was. This team should be much more dominant, and that should be what we all want. I realize that the "little engine that could" or "underrated journeyman" narrative has a lot of cachet around here and in Buffalo generally, but give me a break. I want to see the kind of excellence we saw in the late 80s and early 90s. The Jauron-ball wins against lousy teams are not that inspiring to me. They are all part of a tease act and we know how this storyline usually plays out for Buffalo. I hope I'm wrong, but this coaching staff pulls out too many head-scratchers for me to believe otherwise.
  10. You mean his potential for a 50 yard run, of which he had one today? He is a player who needs to be used correctly. He is not a guy you give the rock 25-30 times a game, and he is not a typical between-the-tackles runner. His field vision is not terrific, but he is dynamite in space. It needs not be sugarcoated nor minimized. He is a useful player in the NFL, just probably not the kind of guy who should go 9th overall. That is not his fault, and he can still blow a game open regardless. As for why he doesn't more often, this should be blamed on the coaches, not him personally.
  11. Meh. My animosity is squarely directed at Marrone for sitting a more talented receiver and not finding a way to use BOTH.
  12. Man, I've been grammar-copped! Fairly, though.
  13. If it needs surgery, my understanding is it would have to be pretty bad. It is hard to set. I did not get surgery when I fractured mine. It's set a bit weird now and it definitely has made my shoulder less strong.
  14. 12 men on the field on a 4th and 1 should be a fireable offense.
  15. Fans clearly haven't.
  16. you must be mistaking me for someone who thinks Rob Johnson was good. I'm sorry, if Flutie was half as good as his supporters think he was, he would have done more with his chances. It's a shame the team didn't have a good enough QB.
  17. a frickin' all-world defense helped the team, not just Flutie, to win.
  18. I want to see Hackett gone and a more experienced OC in the position if at all possible. I could live with Marrone staying if that happened.
  19. maybe it was the way he threw teammates under the bus, or perhaps it is that he is sainted here even though he never won a playoff game. The better question is, why don't more people realize they both sucked? I get it that people here love his Uncle Rico story - if only they'd have put in Dougie - but defenses had figured his game out.
  20. ]Even if he's a rapist?
  21. I'm not surprised that the forest is being missed for the trees here, even though I was very conservative with my estimations.
  22. 1) Three extra chances, 13 point swing 2) Say that one of those drives that ended in a turnover could have ended in a score. It is now a 16 to 20 point swing. 3) It is a lot easier for Brady to turn the screws on a team when he has the lead. 4) More possessions for Brady and co. further wears out the defense. Not so hard to come up with a list in 90 seconds.
  23. Does no one want to consider that EJ looks a lot better selling the play action fake? I feel pretty strongly about this. There isn't much that he does better than Orton right now, but I do think this and the escapability are two items on his ledger.
