Pregame: Deion, Irvin, Shannon Sharpe -- all loudmouths whom I hated on the field and are eminently more hateable on a TV set. Boomer Esiason is also a total douche and Marino, it goes without saying. Boy, I can't wait till we have to hear Tom Brady on these shows. In game: Gus Johnson, Kenny Albert (sounds drunk and completely clueless), Rich Gannon (I'm not sure how every guy who played QB becomes an instant expert), and just about every D-team guy they have show up for the Bills games. When Simms is talking strictly about the game he is just OK. When he is going through his ball-washing of the usual suspects he is unbearable. This all makes the near-senile Criqui appear quite favorable. I am enjoying: Marshall Faulk, Solomon Wilcots, Sterling Sharpe, Jaws and Ron Pitts to an extent. I used to like Costas more but I think he's kind of coasting on reputation by this point. Edit: changed second "shannon" to sterling so it makes sense. duhhhh.

Califone's "Roots and Crowns" is the best record I've heard in a long time. They employ a lot of acoustic instruments and folk techniques but aren't afraid to use electronics, either. Here are a couple samples... Spider's House -- one of the more poppy tracks on the album. Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo (also cited on here) called it one of his favorite pop songs of the year. The Orchids (cover of Psychic TV) -- this is a really sweet cover of a sort of disturbing track written by a prominent goth band.

Guess who's pouting in Houston?
RuntheDamnBall replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't buy this 'report.' If Moulds is not happy it's because those guys are not winning. He knew when he came in there that Andre Johnson was the #1 guy and he thinks a lot of AJ as a #1 receiver. Moulds was simply not happy with the results Buffalo had had, the idea of a looming pay cut, and the growing pains accompanying the development of Losman. I was told by a guy whom I view as a bit of a blowhard, who claims to be a friend of Moulds' agent, that he and JP got into a tiff at a party last year. Take that for what it's worth. I am not sure what it's worth at all, to be honest, but I do believe that the two didn't get along as well as some of the other players. I also think that the idea that Houston shouldn't get beat by "a guy like Losman" probably came from Eric and this was reflected in the poor sport comments of guys like Dunta Robinson. I don't blame Eric to an extent for having pent-up frustration about the way the QB situation was handled here during his entire tenure, however. -
Not to mention it just looks sweet.

Liz Phair was soo, so good on that first album and has gotten so poor. She pretty much opted out of what was cool about her career and her songwriting in favor of something more pointedly commercial. All of the 'risks' she takes now are very calculated and for shock value vs. the clear 'don't give a !@#$' mentality that made that first record so great. My guilty pleasure: probably gotta be the 70s rock cheese I was surrounded by growing up. Sometimes it feels so good even though I know it's so bad. Sometimes I feel guilty about liking Depeche Mode (late 80s stuff) and New Order (the early 80s material) but the songs are so good that I think they stand up regardless of any notion of dated style.

I can listen to the American Anthology of Folk Music and hear plenty of guys and girls who knew no rules or made them up as they went along. Granted they were dealing with uncharted territory back then, whereas everything now has been mapped out, charted, you name it. But I think mastery is occupying too narrow a definition in your interpretation. And mastery doesn't always = training or schooling or long years of study. Some people just have it. Beck has released a few great records (Odelay and Sea Change are my favorites), but I feel like his best songwriting is behind him. He is a hell of a performer though. I'd argue not much is original about him -- his is more a postmodern pastiche of soul, blues, hip-hop performance. If there is an originality to him it's in that mixing of style.

Most Important Game Of the Year
RuntheDamnBall replied to Buffalo Baumer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not true. The worst time I've had with the drunks was actually in the 100s on the sidelines! I can't say it didn't make me think twice about choosing Sabres tix over the Bills (of course, it's easier for me to get to some of the Sabres away games...) -
Is it finally time to say goodbye to T. Spikes?
RuntheDamnBall replied to envirojeff's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You said it already, we have the cap room. No point in taking it to a proud man who has given a lot to a team that hasn't given a lot back to him. I think we owe him the chance to prove this was a year of healing and getting back up to speed. It's a gamble worth taking if you ask me. You put any other LB back there and he is not going to measure up to a healthy TKO, and a new guy will have to learn the system to a point that the benefits will not outweigh the potential costs. -
Make's You Wonder
RuntheDamnBall replied to Formerly Allan in MD's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm sure he learned something from Sam. But if what I read in general about past staffs is true, JP was probably being told 3 different things by 3 different coaches. Plus I wouldn't discount what he's learned in a full year of playing and finally being given the chance to succeed without worrying about losing his job. -
Let's be done feeding the troll. I know it's not easy because the stupidity is really inviting, but it's just not worth it.

Nate and Roscoe probably score a combined 3 on the wonderlic. Good football smarts, those two, though. -

RuntheDamnBall replied to envirojeff's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Read the papers today and you'll see what Spikes meant to his team in its win against the Jags. It wasn't on the stat sheet. These guys are playing as a team finally and Takeo is part of that, and his energy is infectious. I am all for drafting another LB for depth and potential promotion (and he can have Haggan's job on day one, whoever it is). Someone else used a better analogy in another thread, but it'd be dumb to not see if he can come back after the full year-plus of work that needs to be done after this kind of injury. The way Julian Peterson in Seattle is playing right now has to give you some hope, especially since TKO was an even better player pre-injury. -

Come on, 42 million's just a handful. We all know what he meant, but 98% is kind of a funny choice. -
You're probably right, it's not the most tantalizing option. However, I can't see dropping Nate in favor of a new UFA who would have to learn the system, and handing Youboty the job could be just as problematic as letting the Beast fill in. Whatever your opinions of KT and AY, I think they drafted Youboty with the intention of him at least cracking the top 3.
