peyton, billy joel and prince
RuntheDamnBall replied to The Poojer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Pro Tools is generally a recording software and using it for live mixing wouldn't make much sense. The only way I know of that they could have auto-tuned it live through Pro Tools would be through a third-party software like Ableton Live. More likely they would have used a standalone auto-tuning rackmount unit. Sorry, as a recording nerd I had to jump in here. -
Official "This Halftime Show Sucks" Thread
RuntheDamnBall replied to IDBillzFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Prince is a great musician and songwriter. Sure, he's a bit fruity but the damn game was in Miami for crying out loud. Besides, he's written plenty of songs that will get a girl into the sack. That's got to count for something. I second the 'best halftime show ever' posts. Now if only he could have stabbed Billy Joel with the symbol guitar. -
Thurman Thomas VS. Willie McGahee

Not many people are Thurman Thomas. And our next back does not need to be. He needs to work with and complement what we have. -

Buffalo isn't chasing away FA's like some think
RuntheDamnBall replied to apuszczalowski's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hence Marv's search for players of character. Conversely, you have guys of character like Fletcher who don't get offered a contract and you have to wonder what they're thinking. It's a tough road because you get some guys who truly are washed up and then others who really might just need the change in scenery to prove they have more left in the tank. Ruben Brown comes to mind here. We talk all the time about wanting guys who want to be here. It's a little more complex than that and there are surely guys who want to be here whom we have no use for. It cuts both ways. -
Rumor: Wilson wants Bills in Toronto
RuntheDamnBall replied to slothrop's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Again, it doesn't check out. Why the new HD scoreboard and all, if this team is as good as gone. I mean, it wouldn't be the first time NYS messed up but that's a lot of money down the drain if there is not serious commitment from Wilson and the team to remain here. -

And I'd argue that with B-level free agents Donahoe missed more than he hit. That's probably what separates him from Scott Pioli. Everyone in the world can tell you that a healthy Takeo Spikes in the prime of his career is a can't-miss pickup. Not everyone can tell you which affordable linemen will fit in your system and work out nicely. Last year Marv brought in: Tripplett (OK, not awesome), Bowen (wash, injury), Royal (solid), Reyes (flop), A-Train (solid backup), Kiwaukee Thomas (solid nickel guy), Andre Davis (good ST, poor WR), Peerless (sort of a call-it-as-you-see-it pickup, some liked it, some didn't) Fowler (popular and quality C who seems to have a good rapport with JP, center of line got better as OGs were switched) Nall (wash, probably a capable backup, OK problem to have as JP blossomed) In red I have the signings for which something more was probably expected than what we got in return. I still think that Tripplett will be a quality signing, provided we back him up with a healthy McCargo and a new acquisition to better what we got from Tim Anderson. Bowen's signing now looks a bit silly in that we got solid production from the rooks and Leonhard looks like a chippy guy who can contribute on STs. Reyes should not have been signed. Peerless will either have to better what he did last year or take a demotion as new blood comes in. Again, Nall's non-production is not the worst issue to have and when we part ways with Holcomb it'll be good to have youth on our side in the backup position. So I really like half of those signings and most of them have a chance to perform better than they did last year. I don't think Marv really struck out the way others did. What we got was probably good enough for an 8-8, 7-9 team. We now need an impact guy or two like Briggs to replace what we'll lose, with obvious decisions to be made at MLB, CB, 2a WR, and the defensive line. -

I don't know if they do this right now but I think every FA lineman should talk to McNally and just see if they're going to hit it off and if they play the way that we want them to play. I understand the front office should have the final say but I think you're not trying to fit round pegs into square holes if you have the guys who are working with the talent, especially talent as important to the game as the OL, in on the decision. -

Yes, it's all our fault and that's exactly what everyone's been saying. or, Take 2: We are world leaders, why don't we start acting like a leading nation and do something cutting edge, and lead the way out of the fossil fuel mess? It's much better than taking the juvenile approach of complaining that things are unfair. If we have eliminated our fossil fuel consumption while nations like China and Russia and Iran are stuck in first gear trying to figure out how to support their countries on limited resources, better for America, innit? -

Spikes has played like a monster for us. Adams was excellent when teamed with Pat Williams. Without him, not so much. Villarial filled in capably on the relative cheap until his body gave out. Fletcher gave us his all as well. Milloy and Bledsoe are the two pickups that probably weren't prudent given what we paid (and remember Bledsoe was not just a FA -- which would have been a MUCH better deal for us that giving up a #1 draft pick to a hated and successful division rival for him). Two things come to mind here: 1) don't deal with the Patriots. They know something you don't and will come out on the winning end. 2) If the Pats want to let a guy go, it's probably because he's not worth what he is asking for. Now the Pats excel with role-playing FA pickups and guys looking for something to prove. I think we're working on that and may have found a few solid ones in Royal and Fowler. We need to pick up more of those kinds of guys and less of the Tutan Reyes' of the world. Nothing wrong with looking FA and especially for guys who will fit the system and want to be here. If Starks or Briggs are those kinds of guys, take 'em. -

It is and it isn't. What's equality if not the idea that everyday dreams are attainable for all, so long as one works hard? At the same time, I recognize what you're saying wrt the struggle for rights and a much more difficult struggle with life and death consequences, vs. the game of football that's comparatively fluffy. It's pretty cheap for ESPN to reference him. -

It doesn't always have to be mentioned here to be digested or understood. Just sayin'. And judging by some of the stuff that does get posted here, serious news or concerns wouldn't really be in proper company. -
I just bought a very sweet 70s Sabres pennant on Ebay and as Ebay are wont to do, they just sent me an email saying there are many more treasures I can bid on, and I can 'fuel my passion' for sports. These sorts of communiques usually include pictures of the fabulous items you can bid on. Lo and behold, in this one they completely effed up and displayed a Tom Brady No. 12 jersey in as one of said prospective items I might bid on. These people have no idea how thin is the ice upon which they skate.

to put the NFL is better than NHL argument to rest

YOU KNOW I REALLY AGREE WITH YOU. WHAT A COGENT ARGUMENT. -
Now, now, they did a good job. I wish I could use this defense in a trial: DA: "On the night of blah blah blah, did you rob such and such bank?" Me: "Why yes, sir, but you're ignoring all the banks I didn't rob, and I also coach the junior soccer team. I do lots of good things in addition to robbing banks. And without me there wouldn't be a junior soccer team."

RuntheDamnBall replied to riverz04's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's better because it makes more money? It seems to me that you're conflating two arguments. You can unequivocally state that the NFL is more popular and makes more money than the NHL. Case closed, as the best running back in the NFL might say. However, and perhaps even because of the NFL's success, the NHL is a better sporting product right now. Its games are cheaper. The game itself is not broken up by countless commercial breaks. The flow of play is engineered so that the best athletes will excel. In the NFL, every last detail has been corporatized, and the larger playing field means you get a great TV product but a lesser clue of what's actually going on in the game. -
Enough with this, draft a DT with...
RuntheDamnBall replied to LevysEraII's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What I was saying was that Pat Williams should count as a shrewd DT pickup for our scouting dept in the last 15 years, regardless of whether he was drafted or not. Better than Bannan, Anderson, etc. Hopefully McCargo can face up to the pressure and condition himself to stay injury-free and we can find out if he's really worth anything. -

We signed Pat Williams as a UDFA. -
Good lord. He is a fantastic athlete and an amazing player but he is not a Pro Bowl QB. I love watching the guy (except for when he's running circles around our Bills ), however, I think after a few years of taking a beating he will slow down like most running QBs and after that point he is going to have to become a much more efficient passer. I suppose if you add in his 7 rushing TDs it's a different story, but his 12-13 TD/INT numbers are not impressive to me.

Fascinating article on Dubai
RuntheDamnBall replied to RuntheDamnBall's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Well, I'm sure you've been around more than me. I'm not sure that either is preferable. But that's just me. Just because Dubai itself is not a major oil producer does not mean that it is not a place where oil business is conducted. I think this piece alludes to what you're saying though, in that the desire here is to make Dubai a place that survives on tourism and luxury and excess itself. Can that work, I don't know. I don't think it's any more sustainable than oil. Is it the kind of power base we want to support when there is a very angry and growing segment of people who are working to build such a place, and might have a stake in seeing those in power suffer? As with our dealings with the Saudis, I think that's a question that needs to be asked. Obviously there are distinct differences in btw the two societies and this needs to be considered. I am not reading much into this essay as regards the DPW situation, and the essay goes so far as to mention that the reaction from US legislators was indeed racist as Tom points out. -
