All "progressives"....or anybody else...
RuntheDamnBall replied to OCinBuffalo's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I think part of the problem is looking at a dictionary definition of 'progressive' to define a movement that is much more fractured. I think of myself as a progressive from a social justice and workers' rights standpoint. I think naturally we should progress toward individual rights and away from a more powerful authority. I know there are plenty on the left wing that wouldn't agree with me in some areas on that. TR was a progressive who worked overtime to break down monopolies -- and he's revered by a lot of conservatives/libertarians of today. I agree with that stance. I also agree with his movement toward preservation and a vigilant environmentalism as a policy of our government. Others feel this means more programs, more legislation, and I don't think that's always the answer, particularly where the legislation we have is already doing the job -- or at least lays the groundwork for it. I think it's balance that's needed in any respect. If we tended all the way toward one side or the other, less people benefit. Edit: And XB, thanks, as usual, for stating my thoughts more eloquently than I am able to. -
I have an airbrush. It makes all girls hot.

That's when someone says something that they don't really mean, but they mean it to be funny or ironic! -

He was seen arguing over the bill with George Seifert. Stay tuned. -
a little help with this Takeo Spikes business
RuntheDamnBall replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the only way you are going to get him to take a paycut is by saying that this money will help the team get a great player that they're desperate to get. Takeo's a proud guy and he's been through too much -- no playoffs -- to not give something back after he's given so much. It's horrible that Donahoe sold him -- and us -- such a bill of goods, only to provide shoddy coaching and poor attention to the team's greatest needs. -

You're all but certain to win that bet. Rosenhaus is a slimebag but he's not an idiot. -

Tell you what, I would hate to find out in retrospect that we should have kept Takeo. I have a bad feeling that if we cut him loose this very scenario would occur. -
in the grand scheme of things

Just have to say that at one point Asante Samuel was a rough-around-the-edges 4th round rookie with little playing time and a laughable option for the Pats. Things do change. Also, last year was an off-year for McGee. New system, tough breaks. I think he'll be better (though never better than Clements as a CB) this year. -

Fine resource from a Bills fan right here on the board. Check out the pinned posts. They're usually up there because they provide relevant answers to oft-answered questions. -
Jet Blue!! What Happened!!???
RuntheDamnBall replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in Off the Wall Archives
The real problem apparently was that they were not vigilant enough in cancelling flights promptly. They thought they would be able to weather the storm and when it got worse than they thought it would, they were completely unprepared. Flying back tonight. Hope it's not an issue! -
PM me if you're interested! We'll be drafting very soon. It's a 5x5 H2H league, offline draft conducted on our baseball board, and we'll have 4 keepers at season's end.

Jet Blue!! What Happened!!???
RuntheDamnBall replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in Off the Wall Archives
We flew JetBlue last night. They were cancelling flights left and right and we waited about 4 hours to depart from JFK to Buffalo/Niagara. Other people had waited 2 days for a connection. Gate assignments were being changed 3-4 times for individual flights and there were crews without planes and vice versa. They are really all sorts of !@#$ed up right now. -
I'll be there Saturday to see Clarke McArthur bring his scoring ways to the big leagues.

I could see that but doesn't that say out and out that the social conservative issues are not really as important to that candidate, and that he's just using that wing of the party for votes? I think this is a lot the same on both sides -- using the threat of a social issue to get votes, but not exercising the political capital to actually enact sweeping change because it would cause a backlash.

I don't have a whole lot of time for Newt in that he came here to the New School for a session that was billed in part as a Q&A, and he completely skipped out on that portion of the discussion. I think he's a brighter guy and better policy mind than some people give him credit for, but he's a politician like everyone else. He'll feign interest in something if it looks good for him.

JetBlue has the kind of customer service that every airline should have. These customers surely had a sh------- day, but they'll be taken care of and believe me, JetBlue is going to take a hit for this. I will take one bad day over the situation I had with British Airways last month, where they lost my luggage en route to India, delivered it to the house I was staying two days after I left that house (8 days into my 2-1/2 week trip), and my wife and I saw our luggage a day before we left, and it was mildewey and needed to be laundered on our last day in the country. In the meantime every contact number they gave us was out of service and their entire operation was clueless. I'm still trying to get reimbursed for everything. We have it comparatively good here, JetBlue customers especially. -
you must not watch much hockey. This team will be fine for the playoffs, when it counts. These next two months are going to be a test. As for the injuries: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

They have a lot of skill on that offense in NO, no doubt. I do think if Davis hadn't gotten hurt, he and Bush would have made a great 1-2 punch.

I can't say I'm a believer yet but if these predictions hold true I will send both you and Marv a box of chocolates. This would be about as awesome an offseason as we can hope for. Only thing I would say is, and I hate to be a wet blanket, that sometimes the best moves on paper end up not making much of a difference. Look at the Browns and Bentley. The Vikes and Hutch. Both big O-line moves but they didn't improve the offense for either team -- one because of freak injury, the latter because of other ineffective cogs in the system. But make no mistake, I'd be very happy with these moves.

The NFL as a whole thought the Saints were going to be average or struggling last season. The NFL as a whole thought the Jets were going to battle us for last place last season. The NFL as a whole thought the Dolphins were on the rise with a bright coach in tow. That should tell you enough about worrying about what everybody else thinks.

They did? They have one excellent receiver in Andre Johnson. I'm not sure who else at this rate is or was good. Corey Bradford? Jabar Gaffney? Jermaine Lewis? A declining Moulds? Jerome Mathis? Point being he hasn't been working with much besides Johnson. Probably the better point is that whomever the receivers were it was awfully difficult for Carr to find time to throw to them.

It's true that he does offer a platform that's not stuffed into the left/right packaging or the scripted late-night format, which I imagine has to be nice. I just feel like there's got to be someone else who can do what he does a little better. Just me.

Pretty puzzling, isn't it? He had to pretty much figure no good would come of it, unless he's looking to get hired by some high-profile talk radio.

I feel the opposite about Charlie. He blathers and bloviates and basically answers questions for the interviewee himself, and never gives me the impression that he's actually listening to the person he has on -- the mark of a really good interviewer, IMO. I am stupefied as to how he gets such great subjects on his show. It certainly appears that it's just me and a few others I know that feel this way, though.
