How has the Oil Spill affected your life?

Maybe he's Nelson Muntz? -
You've got to keep them honest, keep them guessing. If you just went and scored touchdowns all the time, the opposition would catch on.

why is CJ any better than reggie bush?

But I thought if he doesn't get 30 carries per game and double the all-time rushing record in year one, he's a bust? -

My argument is not with BP. And thanks for hanging on me the notion that I think we should let someone else do oil drilling for us, even though I said jack sh-- about that. The idiots in the Senate talking about how we should never drill again until we can make sure that an accident of this magnitude can never happen again are just that, idiots. So are the far-left environmentalists who can't see that we need something to keep our economy running until we can shift to other resources. So are the far-rightists who equate any green energy innovation with hippies who bathe in granola. Send 'em all to the middle of the slick and see if they can souse it up, for all I'm concerned. My problem is with anyone self-centered and short-sighted enough to say this isn't a big deal because "it doesn't affect us." Everything we do to the planet affects someone. It's just that the scale is, for the most part, far too big and the change far too incremental to generally comprehend. A nuclear accident in WNY might not affect other regions in a direct and easily understandable way, even if it would have the magic proximity effect to fall in the "bad" zone of the Murra-meter. Does that mean it's not bad and that we shouldn't do everything in our power to prevent it in the future? To see the forest for the trees. Plus I hear they have good beer there. -

Lava comes from the earth. Is it safe to drink, numbnuts? This is about as specious as the energy industry's "Carbon Dioxide: We Breathe it Out!" campaign. -
How has the Oil Spill affected your life?
RuntheDamnBall replied to murra's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
How is this "reasonable"? Because "almost no one" is part of a whole ecosystem that hasn't even begun to truly feel the effects of this yet. Hang out in the marshes in Louisiana. Florida tourism, coral reefs, seafood industries, and to say nothing of the people who live in the areas subject to damage and contamination... Yeah, this isn't going to affect anybody. I tell you what, since oil leaks are all fine and dandy, I dare you to go spread some Pennzoil on your lawn. It probably won't hurt your neighbors anyway. -

I'm no fan of the Euro/socialist model, at least not most of it, but I don't think the better strategy is to go into severe debt through entitlements AND unfettered military spending, rather than just the former. A real solution would have EVERY sector of the government doing its part to cut costs. We're going to shut down an "unfair" tax on soda... but keep subsidizing cheap corn (and corn syrup) that has made the price of it go down 40% adjusted for inflation since the 60s, while real foods have gone UP 40%. We're going to cut teachers in underperforming schools... but drop $25MM to keep OTBs open. I am dying to see a responsible administration somewhere that will face up to reality... from either party. This is simply ridiculous. -

Countdown to the Senator's appearance in 3...2...1... -
Maybe the football gods could throw us a bone and we could sign/convert him into a LT.

This.

It definitely did before the bottom fell out of the market, and a lot of the high(ly taxed) earners took a big income hit. Before the countdown to "you're from Brooklyn, go to hell, go root for the Jets" begins (I'm from Fredonia, no jobs in Buffalo, thanks!), I recognize that back in the day the city was a pretty big siphon on state funds. And the city's not in great shape right now (no one is, as far as I can tell).

They wanted him so badly they skipped him for five-plus rounds? Ah, the draft, where you can't believe every player fell to you. -
Official Red Sox - Yankees Trash Talk thread
RuntheDamnBall replied to Ramius's topic in Major League Baseball's Topics
I'm loath to respond from this since it's from way back, but this is exactly the kind of entitlement that drives me nuts about some Yankees fans. Must kill you guys that the rest of the league doesn't just hand you a fistful of all-stars for the likes of Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy. $250MM salary and we're lusting for three #1s in the rotation. Not to mention the fact that I was reading the Daily News yesterday and they were talking about how they have to compete with the Orioles, Red Sox, and Rays for the division. Despite the fact that I like the Mets, I couldn't be happier to see Roy dealing for the team you turned your back on, JSP. Can't stand that dude, either! Devour each other, Yanks and Sox! -

Obama to name Kagan for high court
RuntheDamnBall replied to EC-Bills's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Well, sort of, except it was a Master's thesis and the guy was 34 and not 22; I think it's pretty safe to say these are more likely core beliefs than they are when you're reflecting on someone who's not yet finished college. Also whatever cloth you're cut from, Princeton >> Pat Robertson's Regent University. I'm not budging on that one. -

I disagree with nothing you've got to say here. Probably quoted the wrong guy (would be interested to hear Magox's opinion on it). Bush got two cracks and picked two very qualified justices (and one not very qualified personal lawyer). They fall very hard right and they are also proof that elections have consequences. -

How much should we judge your life's accomplishments based on an undergraduate thesis or final paper you wrote almost 30 years ago (or more, or less if you're younger)? College is important, but so is 30 years of live lived since then. I know that by accident of birth she would become the third woman on the court and thus send the still-majority-Conservative court slip-sliding into the fiery gates of liberal Hell on a Norse warship, Ronnie James Dio style [/JSP], and maybe she's Karl Marx's long-lost lesbian grandchild, but... Context, please. -

2 of 9 is enough, and 3 of 9 is too much? It's too much for 51% of the population to be represented by 33% of the court? If that's too much, where do the 6 white males out of 9 rank on the representation scale? Is Clarence Thomas "enough representation" for African Americans? Or could we just once go on the merits of the individual? I've yet to see much here on what of her judicial and legal acumen makes her either a good choice or a bad choice. -
Consider another scenario: kid is entering job market after college and wants to take some risks, intern at a place that might have a higher ceiling for him later on, but instead takes a safe and boring desk job, but one with health coverage. He doesn't pursue his ideal line of work because he has to pay off college loans, probably a car, AND his own health insurance on the open market. It seems to me that the most productive outcome would be had if this kid could have a good health insurance backup plan that doesn't stack the odds in favor of a less desirable choice of work. You're right that this could protect "cellar dwellers," but that's the problem of the parents who raised the kid to not take responsibility for her/himself. There is probably a better solution, but neither side seems to be in search of one.
