nice use of a miniscule sample size, PK. What a dumbazz.

Hey, I expressed those same reservations. But I don't fault Gailey for thinking he could do something with Trent when he'd found some measure of success with less talented guys before. The fact is that if the Trent he had in practice showed up on Sundays, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Gailey pulled the plug when he saw those reservations had merit, and that the poor play was a cycle that was going to continue in Buffalo.

Actually GG this is one spot where I don't take issue with their philosophy. I take the 'personnel dictating what they'll do' approach to mean that while in transition to what they REALLY want to accomplish, they are going to be flexible on schemes (hybrid using 4-3 situationally is an example). I think they needed many parts on offense, but it was tough to judge where to start and which parts were reclaimable due to prior misuse, poor coaching and so forth. Seeing what Trent could do and then deciding he was holdng that evaluation process back makes sense in these terms. And I suppose that retaining kelsay does, too, though I firmly believe they are overvaluing him just on principle. I look at that bend-don't-break jauron defense as a mirage that only wins when you have top shelf talent everywhere. They just got GASHED all the time by running backs and slant routes. Most teams the bills beat the past few seasons inexplicably abandoned the run. You rarely win against the best with that D unless you're Indy, and we dont have their defensive talent or a manning and co. on the other side of the ball. Switching to 3-4 will pay off in the long run, or at least I think so.

Does anyone blame Brown for the 'comment'

I think it was briefly opined by a few that this was not a wise tack to take for a guy who was a 7th-round hanger-on trying to make his way into the league. It's perfectly justifiable for him to have been angry, just dumb to have broadcast this on Twitter when he's in a position where a person's makeup and maturity are judged to a fault. I don't recall it setting off a firestorm here, and regardless, he's back. -
That's really one of those decisions that really makes you look brilliant if you make it, not so much if you don't. I am for it against a team like New England because I think you need to take risks and catch them off guard to mask the obvious imbalance in talent, but I can't fault Chan for not wanting to leave points on the board. One thing I'd say is that I recall New England going for it on 4th and 1 more often than not, and it generally leads me to the question of why wouldn't anyone go for it in that situation against the Bills, given what will follow from the Bills offense if you don't make it. I hope that's about to change.

McGee and McKelvin "shut down" corners

I'm glad you're able to see in week 3 of the guy's tenure that he sucks. Let's add George Edwards to the list of coordinators we've run out of town prematurely so he can go pick up a Super Bowl ring with another team. -
You can't honestly tell me you'd rather have any of these guys than Chris Kelsay. This move is bad comedy or hilarious tragedy. I can't decide which.
-
JP Losman put in thankless hours. Edwards put in thankless hours. Gregg Williams, I'm sure, put in thankless hours. If we can't criticize these guys for their play or their execution (and by criticize, I mean both positive and negative), why have a discussion at all? I don't care about how many hours he's put in, and if his generous compensation (twice extended, now) qualifies as thankless or empty, sign me the F up for some thankless work. He is not that great as an OLB in the 3-4, at least not yet, and I just don't see how you reward that. There are other guys with upside who should be pushing Kelsay for playing time. Making up for the mistake of not stocking this team with enough talent by rewarding the cream of the crap is like doubling down on the worst bet you've made all day.

That's all well and good but I see it as a cardinal rule of sports management that you do NOT ever give a guy a contract that no other team would even come close to. I'm not sure what would have been lost by letting Kelsay ride out the season, seeing if we actually got any improvement in his transition to the 3-4, then evaluating. If he's such a good guy, I'm guessing the Bills' offer would come close to what he's looking for in the offseason anyway. Even $2MM extra is money they can't give to someone else, and I agree with the posters who are baffled by the Bills rewarding mediocrity while playing hardball with other players. Meanwhile the Bills wouldn't have been dishing out more money to a guy whose play could be described as average at best, and is seen by many as a liability. In this type of free agency climate, the Bills would have let Bruce go in 1991 and signed Jeff Wright to a 7 year extension. And Wright was more accomplished than a lot of guys in our front seven, which is pathetic. I guess if you are a believer and think the best is yet to come for the guy, it makes sense to control that asset. It's just that there's no evidence to suggest that that will be the case. This is like a 180 on what happened with Pat Williams (whose play at the time certainly merited more faith in the future than has Kelsay's).

Dear god. It just looks worse and worse any way you slice it. This.

So it's really only like buying a $55 garbage can, that you can totally give to the Salvation Army if you don't like it.

Worst contract ever, man. This is like our Carl Pavano deal, except Pavano actually did something prior to signing that contract.

If Jax is making roster moves in order to be able to defeat the vaunted bills, they are more f----d than we are.

Can't really argue with Florio on this one

I'm going to indulge in some speculation, so take it for what you will. I think it's perfectly possible that enough of Trent's teammates went behind his back and said to Gailey that they weren't comfortable going forward. Is that admirable? I am not sure. Does it smack of the inmates running the asylum? Maybe. But, it also would suggest that 1) Gailey is a no BS guy when it comes to players who don't perform, and 2) He would listen to his players and wants them to be accountable to one another, and he wants them to have faith in his system. It's a lot easier to do that when the QB isn't putting the brakes on your system on regular season gamedays. -

If those dudes didn't get lucky sometimes America would be a lonely place. -
The "clueless redneck coaching this team" has probably forgotten more about football than you'll ever know. He's also made it to more playoff games in his two-year-plus head coaching career than the Bills have in the past ten, but carry on with your trolling. Disagree with his decisions if you want, but keep it about football.

oh God, you reminded us of Tutan Reyes. That guy got traded to the MTA the year they ran out of turnstiles. Most of the team acquitted itself well today as you mention. They've got a lot of work to do on defense but the offense looked like it had potential and just a few things holding it back (Green among them). -

This. I'd amend this to say I think he's a pretty solid QB trapped in the body of someone who's just not accurate enough to start on a regular basis. His intangibles outweigh his deficiencies given what we have on the roster. I'd be happy to have him around as backup for the rest of his career, too.
