Melt down in Indy…
RuntheDamnBall replied to San Jose Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think QB quality is such that the great ones fundamentally alter the course of the game in their presence and in their absence. But there aren't 64 of those great ones to go around. A couple of teams might have more than one capable starter on their hands, but as AD noted, it's pretty tough to get a great competitor to sit behind a guy like manning when he knows his opportunities will be limited. Maybe Manning's injury and the success of players who have sat behind stars, like Rodgers, will make some think twice. The fact remains, though, that most QBs who believe in their ability believe they can turn a bad team into a winner. -

I do think coaching has a lot more to do with Brady's success than it does Manning's, but I don't see why one can't acknowledge both as great QBs. I imagine if you threw either QB onto a quality roster - even, say, the Bills', Buffalo would probably have at least one more win this year. Mind you, I say this as a guy who thinks Fitzy is the right QB for the team. Far superior? I don't know. Far more important? Arguably. But Brady has three rings in four visits, Manning has one in two visits, and it certainly isn't Brady's fault that his GM has put together a team that can thrive despite many personnel changes over the years. I can't stand the guy and in a contest regarding whom I'd like to punch in the face, Brady wins, but I'm past arguing that he's not any good. It's just not true. We're in an era of some outstanding QB play, and both of these guys will be unanimous HOF candidates on their first ballots. -

That sounds really familiar to a Buffalo fan who watched the talent level gradually diffuse at the Ralph into the mid-late 90s. I think it may be said that it is easier to build a winner for a good window of time than to sustain that over many, many years, and hand the torch off to a new generation of winners. Until this year, who would have wanted to sit behind Manning forever? Even Pittsburgh, New England, and Green Bay, which I would look at as gold standards for how-to-run-a-franchise, have not had the same GM over their long runs. It's also very tough to get quality young FAs in to apprentice under great starters. That is, indeed, where good drafting comes in, and I think you're right, the returns in Indy haven't been as good of late. Baltimore might be the one exception, and Ozzie Newsome is probably categorically the best in the biz, and yes, better than Polian. Correct me if I am not considering any other deserving franchises. -

Truly He is blessed. In all honesty, Tebow seems like a decent kid in most matters, but even He is admitting he played like garbage. So why all the buy-in when the guy's team barely scratched by against one of the worst Dolphins teams trotted out in recent memory? That, and the QB was a major contributor to the fact that the game was all but lost. He can be an interesting player on the football field, maybe even a "leader," but He does not have the NFL QB position down yet. There are serious doubts that He ever will. This is not to say He'll never amount to anything in the game, but it'll be entirely up to His team and how they use Him. -

Seriously! At 2-5, and two games out of 2nd place in the AFC South, their troubles are over! Look out, Super Bowl, here come the Panthers! -

Isn't Bill doing less hands-on work these days as team Prez? It would be weird if he had to let go of one or both of his sons. As for the Colts, sure, Manning concealed a lot of their deficiencies, but the talent simply isn't there at backup QB. The drop-off is not just that of #1 to typical #2, but from all-time great to rec league below-replacement-level guy. If they even had someone as good as Tyler Thigpen, they would have a win by now (and that ain't saying much). They are also accumulating a Buffalo Bills level of injuries on the OL and with Gonzalez and Addai hurting in addition to Manning, it's not like expectations can be high. The team is foolish if it thinks replacement of coaching or management personnel is going to bring about a quick fix. Manning's return will be one part of the equation, and they may be lucking into great draft position at just the right time. I don't think their drafting has been good, but if they need a big change, it's more likely to be in their defensive philosophy as the Tampax 2 just isn't the way to go in the NFL right now. -
I agree with those who say worry about the Jets after the Washington game. That said, looking ahead as a fan, if they don't press the sh-- out of Burress and make him pay on every down at the line of scrimmage, George Edwards should be canned.

3.5 is a quite deliberate figure on my part. Praise be to Tebow. -

But is Tebow's success sustainable? Give it about a 3.5 per cent chance of working out. -
SIX GAME REPORT CARD
RuntheDamnBall replied to st. pete gogolak's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, I'm sick of seeing the guy constantly command the attention of 2 OL to open up lanes for the rest of the front 7, and even then beating them sometimes to make plays for a loss. The guy definitely looks like a rookie out there. << Good thing the game is scored by the number of yards you give up, especially considering that big yards through the air often come when a defense is protecting a big lead. Am I ecstatic about the D's performance? Hell, no. But I do think they look better. The front 7 has been impressive at times- unfortunately they have sometimes done the job when the secondary has failed at theirs. Getting to the QB is still a work in progress. But we are dealing with injuries to Kyle, McGee, merriman and Kelsay right now. Whatever you think of any of them, they are all veteran starters. Aaron Williams would have been an upgrade over Reggie Corner in many situations so far this year, even as a rookie. This will take time, but they are finally assembling some depth and talent on the D and I trust Wannstedt to help that process coalesce. -

Because it lets people know that there is reason to pay attention to this development as more than pure speculation, but he also can't out or risk outing his source, and to reveal more information would make that more likely. I don't mind hearing that there is good news on the horizon, and not getting the full story yet. Did you always find and open your Christmas presents early as a kid? -
ESPN, Hank Williams Jr. part ways
RuntheDamnBall replied to papazoid's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The onus is on you to present the left leaning comments that didn't lead to reprimand. I'll buy it if you show me, to an extent. The story was that NPR editors and Juan W butted heads constantly, and that this was bound to not end amicably. So, the apparently out-of-nowhere (and ill-timed) severance had a history at least. I imagine if the editors are worth their salt they are constantly coaching the reporters on how to present themselves to appear free of bias. I don't deny that many of the reporters lean left, but I'll maintain that the bias in their coverage is far more inherent in the story selection than in the actual reporting. Then again, I think in the current clime, center is invariably viewed as more left or more right by either side, depending on where you stand. I wish we could just all agree that HW,J is a hack and leave it at that. -

Oh, I am so glad the man is completing the revelation (!) of his ignorance by calling this a Free Speech / 1st Amendment issue (that is, if he is even aware of what an amendment is). As for NPR, there was no crime involved in the Juan Williams scenario, and if there were, or if there were even grounds for citing an unjust firing, you would have seen the lawsuit by now. Now, there is a more murky scenario there because NPR receives about 16% of its funding from some kind of governmental institutions (CPB and direct fed/state/local funding), but even then Williams was not receiving state sanction, he was receiving workplace reprimands for violating the role of reporter/analyst with NPR by serving as a commentator (hence revealing opinions on the news as opposed to analysis) for Fox. Honestly, I'd hope for the same kind of measured response to be taken if Andrea Seabrook were providing her opinion on MSNBC. Anyway, now that we're once again in PPP land, let the marketplace dictate the fate of the least talented Hank Williams this earth has produced. -

SUPER THIS^^^^^. As I shared with a friend: Whatever stripe you're of, whether you agree with Hank Williams Jr. or Kanye West, neither of them are somebody whose opinion matters in this realm. What anyone complaining needs to do is question whether they could get away with something like this at work. When you're a public figure who depends somehow on advertising dollars, saying something in public is saying it in the workplace.
