There's a vast gulf between "unbelievably good" and "below-replacement-level" starter, though, and guess which side the Bills are on? I would take Dwan Edwards and Spencer Johnson as rotational / depth players. As starters, especially when being asked to play out of position, they are not going to get the job done. We need George Edwards gone and about 3-4 more players in the front seven before we can start making any real judgments on Dareus.
-
Aside from the problem of "being more dominate," Dareus is doing everything asked. He occupies two blockers all the time - unfortunately it's clowns to the right of him, jokers to the left, so it doesn't make much difference. It doesn't mean he's not a difference-maker. With no Kyle Williams, no Merriman, nobody at OLB period, it's a joke what we're trotting out there. To suggest otherwise is to suggest you're not watching the games, that you have an axe to grind, that you are one who sees the doom in everything, or worse.

Nobody says he's not talented. They just think he is ultimately not an NFL QB and that the odds are against his long-term success as a passer or in a run/option-centered system as the QB. Teams will figure him out eventually and his inability to pass - and not just throw - don't bode well for him. He's proving people wrong to an extent, so far, but I would take his defense over the Bills' right now, and that is a factor in his success. If teams were running up the score against the Broncos and they were forced to pass to stay in the game, he'd be sunk. Just sayin'. -

:worthy: That's an eloquent over-explanation of an assumption that didn't need much explanation. QB wins aren't a stat any more than LB wins are a stat. -
Dareus is great but . . .

Someone missed the part where Cam Newton was "leading" his team to a 3-8 record, by the way. I think the kid is good, but it's just one example of where a single player can't do it all. Someone also missed the wisdom in looking at the first season of a guy like Bruce Smith on a bad team. NEWS FLASH: The Bills need PLAYER(S), with a capital S. They need more talent. 1BF and co want to see this thing torn to the ground again when we are just beginning to assemble NFL talent and need to add to it with more starters and NFL depth. Because somehow, looking at what's going on in the NFC West tells us something about coaching, and looking at what other rookies are doing in completely different situations tells us everything about our rookies. Dareus will be fine and I am happy with what he's doing as a rookie. -
Please Admit This Season Was Disappointing

You're right, most teams can recover from losing their starting OLB starting Pro Bowl NT starting RB, #3 in the league rusher starting OC starting LT backup LT #2 CB #2 WR #3 WR preseason #2 WR It's unbelievable that they've fallen so far with just a few minor injuries. -

You know, I haven't seen these thoughts posted here before. Thanks for sharing. Is there more to add or are we done here? -
These are the Bills' Core Players

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. -

Von Miller >> Tebow -
Lots of "ifs," I'll acknowledge. However, consider if the Bills' season had actually continued injury-free on the offensive line with Levitre and Wood in their opening-day positions, where they were being talked about as Pro Bowlers and mid-season All-Pros. The lack of respect and visibility for some of these guys tends to coincide with the poor supporting cast as well as both freak and preventable injuries. If the season had stayed on the tracks for these guys, they might have been getting top-5 notice. I still think Wood is top-12, and Levitre is higher-up in that conversation. The lists you posted pre-date the season, and I think we saw top-5 play from Levitre before he was asked to shuffle. You're right about Polamalu - maybe Dareus turns out to be one of "those guys" for us - an undeniable presence who must be accounted for and is top-5 bar none. AJ I'd say is actually arguable for some of the same reasons we've mentioned - an inability to stay healthy enough to put together a full campaign and be part of a playoff puzzle. He's an astonishingly good receiver, but today's game doesn't make it easy for a guy. Gone are the days where a WR can make a living without getting hit, like Jerry Rice did.
-
How about this: replacing or extending Levitre right now would both require top-5 money. I think he's in that conversation already.
-
I think Levitre is a top-5 LG that we for some reason tried as a bottom-12 offensive center.

A. Moats is another example of how Bills fans (and, unfortunately the team) overvalue their own - at least the unheralded guys. Moats is a fine player in a reserve role, but not the elite pass-rusher everyone thinks he is. Remember how jazzed we all got about the return of the great Antonio Coleman? I recall how excited many were about Marcus Easley and Danny Batten's returns this year. The fact is, that these guys all look like fringe NFL-ers at this point. They could amount to more, but they're either being held back by a bad coach, in the defense's case, or just not that good. We have a lot of training camp heroes and unfulfilled promise left on this roster after the loss of most of our genuinely good players.

Do you really want to see a guy who is smaller than most NFL fullbacks take on an NFL defensive tackle every snap?

[Updated] Fred Jackson [goes on IR]
RuntheDamnBall replied to Observer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nope. Broken bones and injuries resulting from getting blindside-blocked into your own man on a turnover, or crunched between teammates, have zero to do with strength and conditioning, unless the bills don't drink enough milk. -

He gets to sit until he's 100%, because we are intent on giving opportunities to an injury-prone, soft, potentially talented 7th rounder at a critical position. Welcome to rooting for the Buffalo Bills. Brothers: My name is RuntheDamnBall, and I have a problem. -
As a card-carrying member of the brain-dead posse, I salute you. Or I would, if I knew my hand from my foot.

If you guys play D&D you know Fitz's charisma has gone way down these past few weeks. I think he needs to sacrifice a greater Quaggoth if he is going to lead the Bills to victory.

Look at the number of games Lee Evans has missed over the last three years and get back to me. Also look up how many WRs are playing into their 30s. There are many. The "part of the loser regime" statement doesn't wash because 1) many of us didn't think that - reaction to loss of both players was at least 50/50. 2) Moorman, George Wilson, Lindell, even Fitz and Fred Jackson have connections to the "loser" regime. Let's cut them! I wish we had quality depth, any way, any how. If we mitigated the loss of two veterans with some pickups to match instead of bargain basement league-minimum guys who can't play, I would not be singing this song. Feel free to trump up Colin Brown, though. He hasn't played so he might yet be a world beater.
