  1. Really? Because the precedent would be Welker's foot comments re: Ryan. It got him benched for a bit of the game and then he came in. Chan was less serious about winning this game than about teaching Stevie a lesson. No fun league (unless you're Aaron Hernandez high-stepping into the end zone). Happy New Year.
  2. does anyone have a link for a stream? You can PM me if you don't want to broadcast it.
  3. It's probably time to promote Modkins and let the shackles off this offense!
  4. Of course, Fred isn't fathering an entire classroom of children and working out a plan to fund the operation by running cocaine. But otherwise, yeah, they are pretty much the same.
  5. I thought I sort of accounted for that in saying that if the clear BPA is a RB, that someone will surely want to trade up to that spot. That said, I think the strategy of "three players" you'd be comfortable with at any slot is a good one. And if the first guy is far and away a cut above, a once-in-a-generation talent, so clearly better than any average player at his position, I think you need to take him no matter what position he plays. I think those are pretty narrow definitions, though, and I don't think, for example, that Lynch or Spiller qualify.
  6. I hate the strength of schedule rules. It's a double-penalty. You get the tougher draw in-season, so you get a worse draft pick because you weren't necessarily as bad as the team that played worse against lesser competition? I wish they would just do a lottery for the top-ten already and eliminate this stupidity.
  7. I agree with this 100%. And if the Bills had paid a bit more to keep their own with Greer, for example, they could have had Florence as #4CB and had a nice insurance policy for McGee's next inevitable injury. McGee and Bell will be big determining factors in this next offseason, IMO. The front office has some major decisions to make as to whether they can deal with the fact that these two are injury-prone but also among the best the Bills have when they actually play. That their best options are also the most frequently injured is really one of the factors that has always held the Bills back.
  8. You take the best player available. If a guy who is a lock to be as good as Revis is there in R1, at pick 10, I sure as hell hope the Bills are taking him. I hate the merry-go-round of letting draft picks go and drafting their replacements, but fact is that right now that is actually an area of need given McGee's injury history, McKelvin's lack of ball-skills, and other uncertainties. It's about the player, and a blanket statement about position is kind of foolish. That said, a RB pick would be a luxury the Bills cannot afford. That one I see differently, since they addressed it less than two years ago and still have a strong RB in Jackson in the fold. If OJ or Barry Sanders reincarnate is there at the Bills' spot, then obviously that guy is so good that the pick is worth trading up for, in another team's eyes... Edit: PS: the offensive line isn't bad as much as it is injury-ravaged. The defensive line is another matter and we have spent three R1-3 picks on it in the first two years of the Nix era. So far 1/3 with Carrington looking like he has some promise, Dareus a lock, and Troup an unknown due to injury.
  9. I think based on one game, it's premature to say it would hurt to cut Colin Brown, and I think Rhinehart is serviceable, but if an upgrade were available, why not take it? I didn't necessarily say though that I think a mid-rounder, street free agent, or UDFA would be a bad pickup and not an upgrade. Good OL come from plenty of different avenues. My only point is that the good teams NEVER stop looking for upgrades. The moment you think you are set is the moment that you lose someone that you thought you were going to be relying upon all year. This game is too violent, too unpredictable to operate in any other way. I think they can surely keep the guys they have, but if they are content and aren't looking to get better and deeper, then shame on them.
  10. Thanks for fixing that for me, Doc, but I wasn't talking about the other teams. I don't think Green Bay gave a damn where Mallett was getting picked because they probably weren't going to make a move to get him. I was talking about how the Bills, believed to have a need for a franchise QB, did not take Mallett with their picks, nor did they move into position to select him before 75. I have no idea if any other teams had a desire to move in front of that pick, nor do I care. The point was that if the Bills didn't value him enough to take him with three chances to do so, they shouldn't pay inflated value to acquire the same guy a year later. Even if they like him. That's losing strategy.
  11. I disagree, John. I've said this before and I'll say it again: We need for camp cuts to hurt. Like, really hurt. Like, "afraid we will lose somebody we want to another team" hurt. I want to be in a situation where our worst players would make and could even start for another team. The competition should hit another level. There will be injuries (probably three of them all at once to Demetrius Bell) and you never know when they will hit. Hopefully, they hit you infrequently and you are able to hide some of these players on the PS. But if they do nothing on the OL, especially when Bell can't stay healthy, I'll be a bit pissed.
  12. If the Bills let 75 players get taken before Mallett, it's obvious they didn't think he was good enough. I wish we had taken Mallett in the second or third, but it looks like we got a player in Aaron Williams. I am not sold yet on Kelvin Sheppard, but lord knows it would have been disaster town (OK, next-level disaster town) if we had yet another LB spot to fill after this season. Trading more assets to get this guy when we could have had him in R3 would be characteristic Bills foolishness of a sort that we all hope is being left in the past. Trading those assets to the Patriots? Jesus, we know better than that.
  13. Good call on Warlick. Why was White's career cut so short? I don't have the info...
  14. The TEs who don't get hurt quote is kind of laughable, but then again, is it? They've drafted Shawn Nelson (4th) - migraines, injuries, supposedly big upside Kevin Everett (3rd) - career-ending spinal injury Tim Euhus (4th), Derek Fine (4th) - basically the same high-motor, low-productivity white guy The all-time best Bills TEs are Jay Riemersma (7th rd), and of course, Metzelaars (trade, drafted 3rd round by Seattle). McKeller and Reuben Gant might be characterized as effective. Either way, the Bills have not had a modern-day TE the likes of Gates, Gonzales, Sharpe, Dallas Clark, Witten... well, ever. It seems like they are so essential to a good offense, but not easy to come by. Sharpe was a 7th rounder, Gates famously an UDFA, Witten a third. Gonzales and Clark were firsts. There's certainly no formula. We just need one. I think Chandler is definitely part of the puzzle, and wouldn't mind if we got another one with real upside who "doesn't get hurt," with a second- or third-day pick.
  15. So, you're saying he has a chance (he's 6'1")? Brady had an average arm when he came into the league. Just sayin'.
  16. Yeah, like the stoic Tom Landry ever won anything.
  17. I didn't realize you had all the inside info on how the drafting is done at OBD. My mistake. Also, Jauron had almost the same players? WHAAAAAAA? I will bet you $20 that the roster has had at least a 66% turnover in the past two years. Take that to the bank. Consider why the defense stops getting turnovers for a minute, will you? No Kyle Williams and Merriman commanding double-teams or at least getting enough pressure for the LBs to roam free and get hands up [disclaimer - I am not saying these guys played well this year, but they are better than what's on the field]. No George Wilson. Zero pass rush. Alex Carrington at LB. Spencer Johnson at LB. I get the fact that teams have figured out how to beat Gailey's offense. If you don't think he would have an easier time making adjustments with Jackson and Wood in tow, to say nothing of an actual NFL #2 receiver, I don't know how to help you.
  18. Because with the roster as currently constructed, all that needs to happen is for Rob Ryan to come in and yell a lot and make guarantees. We'll be well on our way to 8-6 and third place!
  19. I'm surprised to see less hatred for the Redskins after the Super Bowl pasting they gave us. Patriots> these two are tied Dolphins> Cowboys Jets> wouldn't have said so a few years ago, but Ryan + the hyped Sanchez turned the tide Redskins Titans Ravens Giants> they get a big reprieve for beating NE in the Super Bowl, but still hold the grudge.
  20. Well, at least if Shiancoe is signed you could count on a little more, um, exposure for the Bills. You could google it, but if you do, don't go telling anyone that I didn't alert you it's NSFW.
  21. Sorry, man. Dick Jauron did not do better on offense. Ever. We got more wins, but I saw nothing better in that era, except that we might have had more than one NFL caliber receiver on the field at the time. Gailey hasn't found a way out of it because the defense is almost immediately putting the offense in a hole in every game. The run game is doing well, but Fitzpatrick isn't. As he goes, the team goes. Gailey cannot throw the ball for Fitzy. His FO has not put a better QB on the roster, so we live and die with Fitz. I agree that Gailey has abandoned the run too quickly and will need to go back to school this winter to learn from what defenses are throwing at him. I simply refuse to believe that many coaches would be doing better with the current roster and situation. I think a reputable DC would do marginally better with the defense, but there is still a need for talent in all the areas I outlined. Just because the losing streak started while we had those two players doesn't mean that it was magically going to get better, without the guy who calls the protections and the offense's most talented playmaker. If you like 5-11, get ready for a new head coach because he's going to be bringing more of the same unless the front office gives him something to work with.
  22. Let's see, 13th in yards allowed per game, 20th in points allowed, leading the defense of the "top" team at 8-6 in a division of weak sisters, on a team with far more defensive talent than ours. Former DC of the Cleveland Browns, a stint where he no doubt left a trail of bodies in his wake. You've pretty much established it, we're just terrified of winning.
