Report: Indy Colts' short list for new GM includes ...
RuntheDamnBall replied to merlin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would like to see the numbers, but it seems to me that if Indy doesn't keep Manning, they are going to have a year of incredible salary cap difficulties. -

Forget the context, I mean, excuses. Every team should be prepared to win with its 3rd string QB. -

They could always trade Sanchez to GQ Magazine for some Rolexes and cologne samples. -
A Few Thoughts About the Season
RuntheDamnBall replied to SageAgainstTheMachine's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree here, and have mentioned some points that Chan needs to take "to school" in the offseason in the Shoutbox, but: Regarding yesterday's decision with Stevie, Chan HAS to feel that he had that Jets victory in his fingers, and that Stevie cost them that game in a couple of ways. So, yes, coaching, but Chan cannot score, keep his QB from making reckless throws, stop his WR from celebrating before he does it, or bat down passes. So, there's that. -
So, why no love for Fitz? How was 6-10 his fault?

And if Cam Newton gets injured? They are sunk. You have better fortunes when you build a team than hoping for a savior at QB, not the other way around. See: Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Ravens, even the Pats. They are all teams that have changed QBs or dealt with QB injuries / suspensions and still found sustained success. They are well-run franchises that have good depth and deal well despite sustained injuries. -
And with the 10th pick in the 2012 draft,

This is a question for you and Bill, because I see you two beating the Upshaw drum the most loudly, but is there no concern about Upshaw's domestic violence charges (ultimately dropped, but still)? I like the idea of the pick a lot, I'm just curious for the perspective on this. -

The kind of insight we all come here for, no doubt! Thanks for sharing! -
The resume doesn't matter as much as perceived value, and you could certainly present the alternative case that Cassell was especially in a system designed for QB success no matter who was behind center (and he didn't make the playoffs).

I did not know Upshaw came with character concerns. I know, I know, charges dismissed, but still. Bill, what say you? -
Unrestricted? Seems young... EDIT: Alrighty, guess he is (because he was a 7th rounder?). I am guessing given the trade chips ponied up for Cassell and Kolb that the Packers would be STUPID not to franchise and trade the guy. Yes, there is a risk of being on the hook for a $14.5MM backup, but there is such a premium on QB play that Flynn is most certainly going to be a hot item. There are going to be first round picks moved to acquire Flynn, IMO. If GB can get even a third for Flynn they have made out on this situation. Regardless, I just don't see him coming with no strings attached. And should that not be the case, I definitely don't see him coming to Buffalo as a UFA, unless the Bills really are willing to pull the trigger on their out clause with Fitz in March, and are willing to swallow what they already paid Fitz to take a giant risk and give Flynn money that NO ONE else in the league will match. That's all very un-Ralph. It's a pipe dream, folks. Our best hope for an incoming QB prospect is in the draft.
-
How about Kevin Kolb, or any of the many others mentioned? The Bills should be working on developing their own good QB situations, perhaps learning from teams like GB by investing in prospects more than usual, instead of overpaying for someone else's developed prospects. The Bills will never win if they waste their assets and consume resources by turning 1st rounders into 4ths, 5ths, and 6ths, and spending picks they need on other teams' 7th rounders who have matured in value. They should be looking for the next Flynn in the draft (Kellen Moore?) rather than spending first-day picks on a guy they could have had for a 7th. The Bills will only win if they keep hitting on their own picks and making insightful choices on the FA market a la Barnett. That was Brian Brohm, dude.

By that logic, why tackle Tom Brady as it's sure to result in a penalty? -

Fred Jackson got fined (and knew he would be) for putting "D III" in his eye black a ways back. No penalty. There are "fineable" offenses that aren't penalties and they usually have to do with uniform modifications and violations, and celebrations. I don't mind these guys being able to express a little individuality when most of what passes for distinction is by-the-book play-it-safe self-effacement/goofiness (Manning, Rodgers) or douchey excellence (Brady), or out-and-out taunting and hot-dogging (Aaron Hernandez today, Whitner or Maybin after jumping in on a team tackle 15 yards downfield). There is plenty of "work hard," "execute," "one game at a time" to go around. Stevie is only hurting the team by getting penalties that at best are inconsistently called, as both he and his coach made clear. I hope he doesn't do it again. But anyone crying for his head and saying the Bills shouldn't re-sign him is really losing sight of the fact that this is the first Bills receiver EVER to have back to back 1,000 yard seasons. We have nobody, and I mean nobody, to step up in his place, and yet fans want to run him out of town. I hope you (and I don't mean you, directly, DD) don't get what you wish for with yet another Bills talent leaving and being replaced with yet another high draft pick. -

Isnt the football a prop in the context of the goalpost dunk? It's no different - something that was used in the game anyway (an undershirt, a football) used differently in celebration. -

But what makes the Lambeau leap not excessive, and a shirt statement excessive? I really would like a clear explanation here, and I don't think the league has one. If its a uniform violation, save it for the weekly fines. That is done all the time. If it's that the former is traditional and the latter isn't, well, Again, this reveals a poor rule. -

Or he is the beneficiary of a rule that is inconsistently enforced, which makes it a terrible rule. -

To those saying hernandez doesn't have the reputation, this the high stepping is ok, I love that you feel the game should be called based on reputation and not on what takes place during the game. You'd make great pats fans. -
