Dan Marion on Morning Joe today...

I don't know why anyone here gives a damn what the Duke of Maryland says. He's a pure figurehead in today's National Football Association -
Quote from Buddy in player character article

Hey, remind me of where on this arbirtrary-but-obviously-very-rigid character spectrum Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith and Thurman Thomas sit. You know, the guys whose missteps have been well recounted here, from alcoholism, to falling asleep in traffic, to womanizing, to plenty of downtown Fredonia exploits. In the NFL, you either perform or you don't, and if you do, all you have to do is not get caught doing something too dumb. I'm not saying they should draft Floyd, nor am I saying they shouldn't, but the only thing the Bills should be concerned about is whether these guys let any outside factors impact their work. I'd be much more concerned about a guy with a domestic abuse history than a guy who has smoked marijuana before, and I would be looking for evidence of a personal change in the situation Floyd is in. You can't write everyone off for not being a choirboy when you employ a lot of people for whom athletics is a best, last chance. -
Why is Trent Richardson in Buffalo?

The Bills are trying to make your head asplode (or Bill in NYC's). Nothing to see here. File it under due diligence. In reality this is a good idea because if they think he is a guy that other teams will value, they know what they can demand in trade if he's there at #10. That may sound far-fetched but at this point there's as much evidence for that as there is for the idea that we'll draft him. -

Mike Mayock: Blackmon vs Floyd
RuntheDamnBall replied to 1B4IDie's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I just don't know how one can rely on Easley after the way his past two seasons have ended. You actually have to view him more skeptically than Merriman, who has at least had some NFL success. I would love to see the kid excel in the NFL but if Nix and co. are betting on this, I'm going to be extremely disappointed. -

Hey all, just wanted to update that I've secured a very good get for the agent part of this, and am following some leads on a player. Thanks again for the assistance and wisdom. -

Thanks for the sanity. I'd like to add to this that a number of fans here CLAMORED for us to take a look at Matt Flynn. Google will reveal where the guy was drafted. The jury is still very much out on him, but respected people think he has potential to be a starter, even if they are not willing to hand him the job outright. It also bears mentioning that "he's another Ty Detmer," "he's another Jamarcus Russell," "he's another Brett Favre" tells so little of the story. It's an argument-ender that simply defines how someone already feels about a player (and I myself have adjusted to this, because I've been guilty of the same thing, even recently). Who is Brett Favre without the Green Bay Packers? Quite likely he's a guy who is a career disappointment for the Falcons. Who is Matt Schaub if he stays in Atlanta? Who is Aaron Rodgers if he gets drafted by the mid-00's Buffalo Bills? The truth is we have no answer for that, but if we don't recognize the impact of a players' surroundings - organizational strength, supporting cast onfield, effective coaching - then we're not even telling half the story. I think Moore is a nice fit not just because I like what he's done in college, but also because of what Chan Gailey might make of him. So far Gailey has taken a less heralded QB than even Moore and made him into at least a middle of the pack QB. Since I don't like what I see in rounds 2-4 at QB, taking a long view with Moore makes sense to me. You can feel like you have a good shot at a decent #2, with upside, but low risk. If his measurables are too much of a detriment to his game, then you cut him or PS him just like you would any other late round pick. -

Now it's one in a million? It used to be one in a thousand? How many NFL QBs are there, divided by how many entrants declared for the draft at QB? Get a grip; the chances are as good as any other NFLer. They aren't great for anyone in the game. The chances are that Andrew Luck will never win a Super Bowl. The chances are he won't win many playoff games. This doesn't mean he's not the right pick at his time. I think the worse bet is blowing an entire day of picks to move up and secure one guy. Even if he is literally Jesus, he can get injured on a football field. Yet that, my friends, is the only way that the Bills are getting a top-tier QB in the draft anytime soon. Unless I'm wrong and they are terrible, or the market for prototypical NFL QBs somehow becomes a buyer's one, it's going to be hard to find one. As WEO said, a sixth round pick is not a pick that locks you in to something for the future. It's a pick that is a genuine crap-shoot, and it might line up that the situation is just right for this kind of player. I don't get why anyone sees a QB in that spot any differently than they see a Dylan MacFarland or a Stevie Johnson. You see something you like, you see a lot of reasons the guy fell to the late rounds, and you are not on the hook for much. I sure as **** would rather have Kellen Moore than the next Arthur Moats, as fun as the few moments he's given us were. I fail to see why it's a problem to like the guy as a late-round flier. -

I've made clear that I believe in the qualities Moore has that have made him a winner on the college level; Obviously he's not a first- and probably not a second-day pick, but we've seen too many players that get by on their athleticism fail at the next level. I don't think Moore is a bad gamble at all to be a #2 QB who displays some upside and could thrive with a few years under Fitz and an NFL training regimen. I have never seen anyone question the guy's work ethic, and he is still young. He has all the makeup you'd want in a QB. There are questions and they may be magnified in Buffalo weather, but until the Bills are in the right position to draft a truly special prospect with exceptional size, strength and football IQ, it's foolish for them to not consider any QBs in the later rounds. The good news is that I trust this front office, whichever QB (if any) they go for. I think this seems like a good year given the situation. Meanwhile, ask JP Losman, Browning Nagle, or Jamarcus Russell how much arm strength equates to success. Hell, ask Drew Bledsoe. It is a good tool in the arsenal, but I think the success of QBs like Brady show that you need a pretty good complement of skills that may be more meaningful. -

Thanks, all. I engineer for one of the flagship public radio stations in the country and for a PRI show, and also teach at a university where I am helping to establish an online radio project. This is definitely not a fly by night thing and it's on spec with a possible pickup for podcast with this station, which syndicates many of its shows nationwide. I also have covered the draft in the past for a print publication, so I might use a scout connection with someone I interviewed a ways back. I do appreciate the heads up about the bills' media channels, which is exactly what I figured. Btw I am certainly interested in contributors for this thing if any of you have interest (this pilot includes a feature on a day spent with the citi field grounds crew and an interview with dirk Hayhurst, former MLB pitcher and author of two books). -

This should have had a question mark in the topic title! -
Calling on some fellow fans to see if you have any tips on the best way to reach a player for media purposes. Context: I am working on what I'm hoping will be a smarter sports podcast program (sort of public-radio style with interviews and features) and I'm hoping to reach George Wilson to discuss free agency - not in the traditional sense of "what happened in the NFL this season," but in terms of what it's like for a player to go out on the open market and sell oneself in this environment. I'm also getting a player agent for the talk, so I'm hoping for a good 5-10 minute 3-way conversation. I know I can go through the Bills' media offices, Berchtold's office, etc, but does anyone have any shorter cuts for access (beyond Twitter, which is just a bit too informal for this, I think)? You may PM me if you prefer. Thanks!

Bills awarded compensatory pick

Can't complain about this one bit. It's like getting a UDFA to sign here with exclusive rights, as opposed to going on the open market for him. Gotta take everything you can get, and every one of these guys is another chance at another Stevie. -

Why don't you just share your own perspective? Obviously whatever football knowledge you're withholding from us will be required if the blind in this world are ever to see. If you've read the whole thread, you've seen that I think the guy is probably too old. I'm simply wondering where he'd be on the Bills board. You also might know I look at Moore differently than a lot of posters, but I don't go insulting anybody else who feels differently. Thanks for contributing to the discussion. Might I add that next time you think an idea is stupid, you're free to just ignore it and let the thread die. Nice. -

RuntheDamnBall replied to RuntheDamnBall's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well answered. To that, I'll reply: I haven't seen much to indicate that Moore is soft. And his bowl games were pretty impressive to me. You and I both know that there are players who have been dogged for size or arm strength who have gone on to have great careers in the NFL. I'll agree that Moore is really small compared to your average QB and this is a different era than the one that allowed Flutie, for example, to succeed. But I wouldn't mind a McCoy that wasn't damaged goods (read: suffered with the Browns) and I would take my chances with the guy who is smart, accurate and knows the game over the physical specimen who has neither of those intangibles. I wouldn't take Moore till R4 for exactly the reasons you cite, but a smart backup who at least has the upside of Fitz at present wouldn't preclude the Bills from drafting a more highly touted prospect someday, and who knows what he could actually bring... -

I fully understand no on Weeden due to age and more importantly, injury history. But aren't you a bit dismissive of K. Moore for a guy who likes Tebow (another "will never be a pro" type)? Just wonderin'. -
