I think unless they are dead-set on drafting two QBs, it will be pretty tough to go into April with nobody. And while no one may be better than Fitz, they may be able to find someone who is as serviceable as he is while 1) not costing as much and 2) not offering a history of having been the starter here, which could cause controversy down the road for a new staff.

I don't think anyone here thinks Campbell is the answer at all. They think he can be a decent caretaker with mid-long term backup potential, and also someone who is there so that the Bills aren't just handing a rookie the job, which looks bad in most scenarios where the guy isn't a unanimous franchise QB prospect. Given what he did with a pretty lousy Raiders team I think he could handle that job. Cut him before March and none of it hits the cap. Salary is not guaranteed unless you're a star or Mark Sanchez, and doesn't go on the books until the season begins. The bonus is a one-shot deal that hits in March.

I think unless Fitz restructures (which may be a given for all we know) he costs considerably more than Campbell would. He is due a $3MM roster bonus in March, and a $200k workout bonus. Surely Campbell isn't going to cost 7.5MM this year, and I'm sure the years would be lower than 5. Fitz has already gotten his $10MM signing bonus, so that's dead money. It came in a 2011 contract extension so I am reasonably certain the first year of SB amortization happened that season, so it was to be spread out over 7 years. 10/7 = 10/7 = $1.43MM per year. So, roughly $3MM of it has been applied to 2011 and 2012 caps. If they keep him, he costs $1.43MM SB amortization $3MM roster bonus $4.25MM salary $200K workout bonus =~ $8.9MM total cost against the cap, $7.45MM actually spent this season Ditch him, he costs $7.15MM total SB accelerated dead cap money, NO further money spent. So, yeah, it doesn't save a WHOLE lot against the cap (about $1.75MM, not factoring in the cost of bringing in Campbell) but it does save them a lot of money. Manning led Tennessee to a shot at the NCAA championship. Glennon led NC State to records of 8-5 and 7-6 respectively. The two are from different universes in terms of their college achievements. Glennon may be a good QB for somebody, but the facts that he plays QB and has a big arm are about the only comparisons I'd make between the two at this point in their careers.

Sar-casm? I would be happy with two this year, because keeping Fitz is ill-advised and expensive, and the FA options aren't very good.

Who is this year's Orakpo or Matthews? Also, we passed on those dudes to draft Aaron Maybin, another defender, so I am not sure how this is like that at all. We need a QB more than anything, so if they find a guy who can play that position, it is more important. It is much harder to find QB talent later in the draft or in FA than it is to find LBs.

Right. I think we could argue that the QB has become increasingly important to the style of play in the NFL 17 years later, and we're seeing a premium to the point of overvaluing placed on QB talent in the draft.

Does not matter what you think Geno Smith is worth. I cannot remember a year in which a QB was not taken with a first-round pick, and he will be taken in the first unless he robs a bank or something. He may be a 2nd round talent in a deeper year, but that is not under his control and as Nix has said, you can't wait for your QB to fall to you. Also, am I in some alternate universe where WVU didn't throttle Clemson in the Orange Bowl (a BCS game) last year, and Geno wasn't the MVP of that game? Also, does he singlehandedly let the opposition rack up 38 points per game? No QB is going to make it to a championship game with that defense.

Look up how many games there have been in the snow in Buffalo in the past five years. You could count them on one hand, I'm fairly certain. Also, look at this. Also DID NOT realize Geno Smith plays defense...

They look great right now, but isn't it fair to say the jury is still out on them? Neither of them even have more than 16 games of work yet.

Thank you. I think there are some good conversations covered at BR, but to treat it like any kind of authority is just a mistake. We have some much finer authorities here.

Yet, they've acted and it just hasn't worked out post-Kelly. They've traded for successful QBs (Bledsoe), brought in capable free agents (Flutie, Fitz, to a far lesser extent Holcomb and some spare change), traded for up-and-comers (Rob Johnson), traded up to draft one in the first round, drafted a second-rounder, drafted one in the third, and more. Look at the history of winning QBs and there is at least one that fits every one of these descriptions. It hasn't worked out but it's been a holistic failure on the part of those players themselves, their coaches, and the front office. We talk about where the ultimate responsibility lies, but it's never actually that black and white. Some guys have been outright bad. Some guys have been put in bad positions. Some have shown promise and couldn't stay healthy or otherwise faltered. Some have been sabotaged by bad coaching and/or bad coaching decisions. Some were too close to the downside of their careers when acquired. What that doesn't change is that now is the time to go back to the well and treat it like the important decision it is. I can't say I agree with not addressing the situation over the past few years, but I can also understand the evaluation that Nix and co. made that they didn't want to throw a guy that they didn't fully believe in as a franchise QB into the current mix.

That's a good question to ask.
