On that last part I am with you. Alex Smith wasn't worth that price, not in his current contract situation at least. Nonsense. If they had addressed the QB position in the 2006 draft we could have landed Cutler - not great but an upgrade over what we have. And they could at least claim to have done something at the position. And they still would have been passing on Ngata. You draft the best there is at what you need. Whitner and Maybin were not the best available in anyone's estimation. Smith is viewed by MANY evaluators as the best QB in the draft, by most as a top 10-15 pick, and by nobody as a total reach at #8. Have you ever been to West Virginia? I highly doubt that an offensive-minded coach like Marrone will not have a heavy hand in the offense, and he will probably have a big say in this pick. If they get a QB, it'll be because Marrone believes he can work with him. And Losman was never as accurate as Geno - not by a long shot.

Well-played. Or, "depends on what you mean by 'depth'". Or, "'depth'? You mean 'dearth,' right?"
-
There needs to be a "dreadful" selection for the depth.

Those are numbers in a vacuum. Fitzpatrick cannot complete 70% of his passes in his dreams. Smith did this past year. And Smith didn't just throw fewer interceptions. He threw 29 fewer interceptions in 2011-12. Even if you prorate Smith's stats out to 16 games in 2012, Fitz still would have thrown 25 more INTs over the past two years. That is A LOT of giving away the ball. If you want, you can claim that Fitz's team was down more often, and he had to try to make things happen, but then you have to view his yardage and TDs totals through that same "garbage time" lens. I don't see how they are close given their performances over the past two years. Fitz has had 5-8 games of great play, buffered by turns of mediocrity and, at times, pure disaster. Smith looked the part of a caretaker last year, came into his own in the playoffs, was improving this season, then lost his job to injury. Over their careers, yes, the numbers look similar, but I look at the trajectory.

It is an unusual connection given that there have been a number of different front-offices running the show on both sides.

Should we trade for Ryan Mallett?
RuntheDamnBall replied to freester's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like Mallett's potential, but this violates a "no deals with the devil" policy. You compound the mistake you made in not investing in the position, by forfeiting future opportunities to good teams. Draft your own guy this year. -
What I would do with the Offseason 2013
RuntheDamnBall replied to missthe kgun's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You need willing partners for trades, and you would never, ever, even in Madden, find one for this one: Potential partners would see the same things the Bills see - just coming off of two foot surgeries, over 30. You'd be lucky to get a 5th rounder for him. He is worth more to the Bills than to anybody else at this point. No picks are coming back for Fitz, either. He's cut and signed to a contract of maybe double vet-minimum somewhere else, or he stays with the Bills. The book is out on him and I doubt any team believes he is a long-term starter at the position. -
Smith is very solid and has played better than any Buffalo QB over the past ten years, save for Bledsoe's magical 8 games. Bono and DeBerg were pretty average, but Grbac had a decent run and Montana even in his decline years had that team in the playoffs. Not sure of your point here. Call it a trash chute, but the Bills have been dumpster diving for QBs for a decade-plus.

Alex Smith--nothing to do w availability next yr

If drafting Geno Smith gets the BIlls deep in the playoffs every year and to the Super Bowl once, it would be one of the best picks the Bills have ever made. Reid could still want something different. -

What makes Geno Smith a McNabb clone? And what makes you think necessarily that Andy Reid, who wasn't actually responsible for drafting McNabb, always saw him as his ideal QB? -
No, it sounds more like it's before the draft, which is when you say lots of things to the media so they can do their job and you can do yours.

Yes, I need enlightenment. I offer you cookies in return.

Not me. I take someone who is always right very seriously. What are tomorrow's Powerball numbers?

Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse

I see the resemblance in this picture of Nassib. -
That contract of Fitzpatrick's is killing us.

Dude, 10.5 sacks on this hot mess of a defense in 2012 is a real achievement. Mario is fine. It's the LBs that are the problem. Nope. -
It may not, but given the number of things that will be in flux, if they can at least say that the O Line is intact it will be a victory for this team. I think the line has developed into a strength of the team and I really hate to see that position just handed to one of the JAGs they have, spending a draft pick and waiting for him to learn, or spending tons of money (maybe just a bit less than Levitre costs) on another guy to plug in. If Marrone really has other ideas about the kind of line play he wants to see, and it doesn't involve Levitre's skill set, I suppose that's one thing. But after Greggggg I am wary of a guy who comes in and sees his system as paramount over putting good players in position to succeed.

A front-office staffer said something non-commital before the draft. This is news?
-
I hear Mike Pucillo, Bennie Anderson, Trey Teague and Derrick Dockery are available.
-
Wait, isn't everyone complaining that our 6-10 team let Whitner go to a Super Bowl contender?
-
I'll bite. How does a guy have "more intangibles" - i.e. more things that aren't measurable? Scouts aren't always that much smarter than the rest of us.
-
Oh, this old thing? The loaded weapon? On an airplane! Totally forgot about that. Yeah. Can we all agree that the guy is colossally stupid either way? That, or he forgot that he wasn't an air marshal, or has forgotten that for the past 11 years airport security is just short of Pentagon security.
-
Really? You obviously missed the 8 or so years in the desert before Levitre was drafted, then. Plus it's a great idea to create holes so you have to use draft picks to fill those, instead of the myriad holes you already have.

I miss that dolt.
