Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse
RuntheDamnBall replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What is this I don't even -
I am soooooo sick of hearing how there are no franchise qbs in this class. Just because there isn't a Luck doesn't mean there isn't a QB you can do quite well with.

How about to the team that plays in Rogers Centre (once a season)? That would be awesome.

I'm just saying from his perspective that Marrone probably looked to win a team game in all phases of the game. That included neutralizing Smith's best attributes, sure. But it also involved beating a defense that was easily dominated and capitalizing on mistakes. Nassib clearly had a better game in the 2011 matchup but it doesn't make him a better QB. Marrone might in fact think that he has identified correctable flaws in Smith's game, after game-planning for him 3 times. Who knows? But I just find that your argument really doesn't wash. It's a team game.

They've been working on it all year. "I don't get a good vibe." "He doesn't have leadership skills." "He doesn't have nunchuck skills." "He reminds me of Jamarcus Russell." "He reminds me of other black WVU QBs." All these arguments have in common is that none of them are really based on anything tangible or useful. The game tape tells me he is a hell of a QB with a great arm and a nose for the open receiver. The tape tells me his team had a sh--show defense that cost his team games -- games that if they had won, would have improved his stock. That can be to the Bills' advantage here if it forces him to fall to #8. I don't think he's a can't miss, but he is the best this draft has to offer and if they have the opportunity, they have to take him.

Sean Smith would be a fantastic pickup. It would keep those of us in the "PLEASE GOD DO NOT DRAFT A CB #1" camp happy, too.

THIS!

Same to you. Nothing personal. I just think there's no evidence out for us on this. The Bills don't give us many reasons to trust them, but I am not sure I would throw this particular baby out with the bathwater.

I think the bottom line is that if they upgrade at this position or hold the line with a much more cost-efficient option, they're going to be OK. It's the fact that the Bills' track record on this is spotty that has me worried. That, and the really unsavory option of spending a #8 pick on a replacement guard. That is a move that a better-positioned team like the Niners can afford, but I don't think the Bills can do that just yet. Now, they have indeed unearthed some gems with later cuts and scrap-heap picks like Urbik and Pears, and they may be able to do this again. The Giants have definitely located decent linemen without spending all their top draft picks on them.

Why wouldn't ex-Jets want to lay themselves at the feet of the Buffalo Bills, who are not calling these players, for less money and a less likely shot at the playoffs? IT ALL ADDS UP!

Okay then. Please outline for me how the Bills are employing analytics. Use facts and cite your sources. Here's a pen. Be prepared for people to contest your ideas if you back them up with next to nothing. I've provided context, take it for what you will.

If you don't know much about moneyball, and especially don't have a clue how the Bills are employing analytics (which do not = moneyball), please refrain from opining on the matter. Btw, only Giambi's Yankee contract doesn't look like a mistake among those free agent losses. The A's were also good at drafting projectable talents and took fewer risks. They also had to adjust when they realized their models were downplaying the importance of defense. They also have gone back to incorporating more of a balance of scouting AND analytics. The analytics were and are only ever about locating undervalued assets so that you can compete with teams with greater resources - whether that's the allure of s bigger market, team budgets, a new stadium, or whatever else. It isn't just about operating on the cheap. It's why Boston hired Bill James to help them get the most bang for their buck. The A's were simply early in the game and an interesting test case for being able to pull it off on the cheap. In part they did this because their division rivals each had flaws. The least flawed rival - the Angels - ended up being their primary roadblock. If Buffalo is to succeed with analytics layered over their existing operation (which may itself be the problem), it will be because it helps them see things in players that the market isn't putting a premium on. Consider this before spitting out a very narrow interpretation of what analytics means in sports.

In the NFL, that counts as league experience. Regardless, are we supposed to be impressed at how much he's achieved for a guy who is really only in his third year if you think about it strangely? I hope for the best for the kid, but it's lunacy like this that keeps the Bills in the basement. It's like hoping to squeeze some oil from rags to keep your car running.

Amendola..Welker clone Pats new go to guy
RuntheDamnBall replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's a Welker clone in the way that most clones have some physical deficiency that makes them subpar to the original. Amendola is a nice piece that I might not have minded having here, but he is injury-prone and NE just paid through THE NOSE for him while Denver took Brady's fave target for relative peanuts. Now, of course, let's see their health records switch now that Amendola is under Belicheck's dark magickal sway. Hopefully not. -
That's all well and good, but Polian also had certainty at the most important position on the field, plus Bruce Smith while he was in Buffalo. It's a lot easier to build out the rest of the team, and to "slot" the other guys when you're anchored by Hall of Famers. If you lose somebody, you can always say, "sure, but I still have Manning (or Kelly)." Not downplaying his achievements, but still. I think the Bills let go of a guy who will now get All Pro recognition. We'll see whom is proven right there.
