  1. Thing is, though -- while Cowher might want to get back in, he still doesn't need to find a job this offseason. Another year on the broadcast side, especially if Fox doesn't get an extension in Carolina, might not look so bad to him...

Of course that's true. But ESPN reported Sunday he's making calls to line up a staff, and four years out of the league is a long time. I can't think of any coaches off the top of my head who took that much time and came back as the guy to get.

  2. Now the biggest concern with Butler is his health he always seems to get hurt for a few games a year. Are people sold on the idea of Butler coming back and being the starting RT from the get go? I wouldn't mind having Butler come back as the starter at RT because we have a guy like Jermon Meridith who can come in if Butler gets hurt.

I think Butler's injury rep is overblown. This was the first time he was lost for the season, and that was because his knees were rolled up on from behind. Last year, he missed three games (BTW, we lost all three) and in 2007, he started all 16.

  3. There are several reasons to think the Bills are out of the running. Not to be flip, but they're the Bills and not all that attractive.

Plus, if Cowher was in play, we'd know about it. So much of what the Bills are doing has gotten out, and Cowher is a guy they'd love to be linked to for PR purposes.

Hey, we know what we are. The Bills have to be one of the least attractive jobs in football. The thing is, when news of Cowher rebuffing the Bills first came out, there were a lot more attractive positions in play. Now, according to ESPN today, there might be openings in Jacksonville and Seattle, and before Tampa Bay beat the Saints, they were being talked about. And that seems to be it. Are the Bills really less attractive right now than Jacksonville and Seattle? Please be candid.

  4. A month ago, Brad Childress inked a four-year extension believed to be worth $4-5 million a year. His team was 8-1 and a Superbowl favorite. Since, they're 3-3 and need help to get a bye. A quick playoff exit will probably leave Favre to do his retirement dance again, the Vikings will slip back to mediocrity, and the Vikings will be left wondering why they couldn't wait until after the season to extend Childress.

  5. Hey Tim,

Now that it looks like there won't be job openings in Carolina, Houston, Chicago or Dallas, any chance Cowher will reconsider? Or even talk to the Bills? There doesn't seem to be any great opportunities out there.

Edit: Based on this Chris Brown post, saying that Cowher is taking the same position with the Bucs as he took with the Bills, is there any reason to think the Bills are out of the running?

  6. Browns won't beat the Jags. We'll be drafting 9th. Remember we play the 14-1 Colts this week, so our SOS will obviously pass the Raiders, since we were only 'ahead' of them by one game in the SOS race. If we beat the Colts backups we'll be picking 10th.

Jeez, a 5-11 season only nets us the 9th pick, a TON of bad teams this year. Normally this should be a top 5 pick.

Those numbers already factor in Week 16 opponents.

Browns are 1.5 point favorites and have won three in a row. Game's in Cleveland, and I don't see a team from Florida that motivated to play in the cold.

  7. +1 I think he also got very sick last season and lost some time during the pre-season.

    According to the PFT post:

Smith has shown promise when given the chance to play and was likely to open the 2008 as the Ravens starter over Joe Flacco if not for being sidelined by a rare form of tonsillitis.

  8. a 3rd for troy smith? HA! what have you been smoking. a 3rd round pick is pretty valuable,

Right. It could be our next Chris Ellis. Or Trent Edwards. Or Ashton Youboty. Or (Dare I? Dare I?) Tim Anderson.

Yup I'd bring him in. He has upside and youth on his side at least. We need to get lucky on a QB and not risk a first rounder trying too. Some fans need to face reality. This "Bona Fide starter" and "franchise Qb" garbage is unfortunately not a possibility. The franchise Qbs are gearing up for a playoff run right now, not requesting trades and hitting FA.

I think half the board believes you can find them in Aisle 12 at Walmart.

I know some on the board expressed interest in him in other threads.

    Some thoughts:

He probably wouldn't cost more than a 3rd, as opposed to other promising young back-ups, such as Dennis Dixon or Kevin Kolb, since Baltimore already has a viable #2 QB on their roster and has publicly made himself available.

I haven't seen any of his games myself, but people have been impressed with his play.

Drew Brees has quieted a lot of concern about QBs that are only 6'.

    Thoughts?

  10. Good point. It's easy to give up a 7th for a pass rushing DE with 10 sacks. It happens every year because there is simply an abundance of guys who can rush the passer.

Jason Taylor returned a 2nd round pick in 2008 when he was a year older and had a very similar stat line (56 tackles, 11 sacks, 4 PD, 4 FFs, and 1 INT returned for a TD; Schobel's line with a game to go is 54 tackles, 10 sacks, 4 PD, 3 FFs, and 1 INT returned for a TD).

  11. The previous season the Colts used their first 2 picks on Tarik Glenn and Adam Meadows , then drafted Larry Moore and Steve McKinney along with Manning. They already had Jay Leeuwenberg. Regardless, Polian would have been smart enough to bring in good veteran OLinemen to protect his prize QB. The BILLS have shown they aren't very smart.

And last year, we used 1st and 2nd round picks on Eric Wood and Andy Levitre.

Polian drafted McKinney in the 4th round (he used the 2nd and 3rd round picks on WRs), and Moore was a low-level free agent pick-up. So, I think there's a lot of parallels to what the Colts did, only I would say we need to spend our 2nd rounder on OL and not wait until the 4th.

I agree this organization has not been very smart, but I think it will be a totally different group of people making the calls.
