Then he should have been traded. I just don’t understand why anyone would let a 1st rder run the full 5 years and not get anything out of it. Aren’t the GMs paid to know what to do? Argument?? That’s the problem with this place, too many people want to argue. Well, here I am. What do you want to “engage” about? Read the title, I clearly asked for opinions.

Reflecting on what happened to the Bills’ players’ contracts and how they were structured. I was of the opinion that Beane was a wizard when it came to contracts but I’m not so sure right now. Knowing what the salary cap has been I’m a bit surprised by how much the checks and balances were a bit out of whack, finding ourselves upside down and over budget by a considerable amount I might add. If I recall correctly there’s been a few players that Beane put on a 1 year contract on and when the time came to re-sign them they had outplayed their contract, hence to re-up them the cost escalated considerably. I’m thinking it would be better to sign players to a contract that consists of multiple years (3 yes?) with funny money built into the backend of it so it would allow the Bills to have an out of it after a year or 2. I referenced Tremaine Edmunds’ contract in the title of this thread and what I’d like some opinions on is due to Edmunds being so young (19 yrs old) when we drafted him. The Bills built a contract that in hindsight wasn’t going to favor the Bills in the end. Being only 19, getting 5 years of NFL experience when the contract expires leaves Edmunds holding all the cards. What I’m thinking is that when a drafted player is ultra young then it would serve the administration better to recontract such player by no later than year 3 before the player has more time to validate himself, hence his value/cost skyrockets. In Edmunds’ case I realize he never blew anyone away with his play so the Bills waited until the next year and then again waited again the following year after that in which he finally did play good and then became unaffordable for the Bills. If the Bills still couldn’t get an accurate bead on him after his 3rd year then when the Bills exercised the 5th year option with him then they should have traded him by the end of the 4th year or even extend him by that time. Allowing Edmunds to finish his contract left the Bills high and dry imo. If anyone wants to say that well at least the Bills will get a compensatory pick for him is very disappointing compensation if you ask me. Drafting 1st rders and just ending up with a compensatory pick is poor management imo.

I’m almost expecting it after seeing Beane clean up the books a bit. It seems to me that he waited after a good several other teams started and then he cleaned up a lot for the Bills and fast. I have come to realize that Beane likes to surprise/shock people with his covered up transactions. Here’s hoping that early tomorrow Beane makes it a big time WR with one of his signature surprise trades. It wouldn’t surprise me if this is where Oliver gets traded as well. Go Bills!

Based on the compensation, which I couldn’t imagine it being anything thing too hefty seeing that the Rams are looking to shed Robinson’s salary and are willing to pay some of his contract, this could be a great solution. Rumor has it that the Giants are interested in Beasley and also trading for Davis. If there is any truth to that I’d be all for trading for Robinson, retain Beasley and trade Davis. The line up then would look like Diggs, Robinson as the #1 and #2 WRs, keep Beasley in the slot, retain Smoke Brown and also have Shakir as the 4th and 5th WRs. To me that would be a pretty impressive line up for WRs. Having Knox and possibly drafting someone like Georgia TE Washington in the 2nd rd would be quite the solid line up for Josh. Of course I’m hoping that the Bills are going to draft Texas RB Bijan Robinson. Adding a potentially great blocking/pass catching TE like Washington would be awesome, especially someone like him would help our OL. WRs like the above mentioned and adding Bijan Robinson and James Cook for RBs would make this offense pretty lethal imo.

If the Bills could get a early 3rd rder for Oliver then I say sell and move on.

I’ll keep it under this topic but if Hyde didn’t get hurt would Poyer have gotten an offer on another contract with the Bills? Not having or having them at full strength, Hyde, White and Poyer this year did put a lot of stress on the secondary.

Thanks for posting this. This is big news! Whenever a past great wants to help the franchise out with a young player it usually indicates a commitment and a belief to such player. This could spell the final stage(s) of the end for Gabe Davis.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he could be had for a reasonable trade compensation. Arizona is basically starting over and they are under a new regime. He would be the perfect compliment to Diggs and this type of move could help smooth over the end of last season. This is Brown’s last year of his original contract, he’s due 13.4M for 2023 and then he’s a FA unless the Cardinals pony up and pay him some big bucks. I would think a 2nd or a 3rd rder and possibly one our weak DL, Epenesa or Basham could get this done.

Wow, thanks for posting that! I’d like to see more posts like this, it’s kind of like an eyeball test of players. Like many I’m still curious about about his take with Josh, wondering where those two are at with each other.

This may increase his percentage of success in finding better talent, hopefully it takes more risk out of his selections. The only thing left for acquiring better talent this year seems to be the draft. Right now finding quality of player is the biggest challenge facing McBeane during their tenure imo.

In addition to not drafting well McBeane seems to be letting the wrong players go.

Utilize Rosseau, Lawson and Phillips as DEs, Von and Milano as outside LBs with Benford as a ILB. Draft a hog for DT and a couple of more LBs as well. We play nickel mostly so we have plenty of DBs for the system.

Between the players we have and the players that we’ll have coming up for new contracts it may be time to change the defensive philosophy. I also think that replacing and/or adding new players will be easier and cheaper to do. Looking at the current roster we already have plenty of the pieces in house. Adding more LBers will be needed but once again they should be pretty easy to find, especially in the draft where 4th and 5th rders can provide great replacements.

The faster the front office can wrap their minds around the running game than the faster this team/franchise will progress. As far as the defense goes we’re not in very good shape, especially with the salary cap. It’s nice hearing from someone who knows what he’s talking about.

I think that all can agree that the RB position and the OL as a whole just isn’t working. I don’t think that anybody can really predict all the draft picking, FA acquisition(s), trade(s), salary cap ramifications and contract manipulations accurately, at best maybe just outline a strategy that can be plausible. Obviously not being a GM or in the daily NFL loop I’m going to try to reason out what could be the most beneficial way to improve our current state of affairs. I know drafting a RB in the 1st rd isn’t the popular choice amongst the masses but if Texas RB Bijan Robinson is there when the Bills select then they should jump all over him. If this can come to fruition then it’s time to say good bye to Singletary, Gilliam and Tawain Jones. I’m not sure just what the ramifications are with Hines but if it’s reasonable then I’d like to keep him and run with Robinson, Cook and a splash of Hines on offense and keep Hines as the KR and PR. My next suggestion would be to try and finagle a trade with a team that is going through a transition (new GM and/or coach) and work out a trade for a player that wasn’t the new regime’s doing. Finding a player that doesn’t fit in their future scheme of things and/or having to re-up a new contract for such a player. Arizona comes to mind but not for who you may first think of. DeAndre Hopkins isn’t feasible or reasonable for the Bills even if he were to become available. To me WR Marquise Brown makes more sense for the Bills financially and strategically. The Cardinals acquired him for a 1st rd pick (#23 overall) and got back Brown and a 3rd rd pick in return. They are exercising Brown’s 5th year option for the 2023 season, after that he’s a FA unless they re-sign him to a whole new contract. Who knows what kind of money that would be and if he is to become available then what compensation would the Cardinals accept back is only a guess at this time. I would think that anywheres from a 3rd-5th rd pick in this year’s draft could work. Once again who really knows, this is just an estimation at best. I’d like to see Davis’ role reduced and Shakir’s increased. Time to part ways with McKenzie and make a choice of retaining either Beasley or Crowder and ditch the other. The next call of duty would be to reshape the OL. Taking a LT with our 2nd rd pick the Bills should find a player of value, can’t really predict who but there should be a couple of candidates available. Move Dawkins to RT until his current contract runs out, he hasn’t been right since he had Covid. Next retire Morse one way or another and slide Bates over to Center. Under these circumstances the Bills would still retain some premium draft picks. Based on what pick that the Bills would have to trade to the Cardinals, a 3rd or a 4th or a 5th rd pick, there would still be enough of valued picks left that could be invested in a OG or two, free agency isn’t out of the question to acquire a starting OG either. Keep Spencer Brown in a back up role as a OT and see if he can improve his play from last year, he’s still on a reasonable rookie contract. I think that acquisitions and realignment like this could be a great way for the Bills to maintain their level of play, deal with their current financial restraints and improve their players by either replacing and/or realigning them.
