Is Jerry Hughes worth a swap of ones with Tampa Bay?
dave mcbride replied to njbuff's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I really hope you're right. Neither of their qbs have anything close to long term contracts, however, and this is a great draft for the position. We shall see. -

I'm worried about the Jets too. -

The Bills made the playoffs last season. The object is to improve on 9-7, not go backward. -
These are fair points, but you realize that HGH use is utterly pervasive in the NFL, right? Anyway, here is his story: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/football-insider/wp/2017/05/24/redskins-trent-murphy-working-to-move-on-from-disappointing-suspension/?utm_term=.fa3d876f0405

I firmly believe that they have all the draft ammo they need to move up and grab the qb they want. No need to subtract your best pass rusher to do it. A lot of DEs have had their best seasons in their 30-33 years, btw - they've learned all the tricks of the trade by then. -

The Bills have to play defense too, and to play defense effectively you have to pressure the passer. The most important positions on a team are QB, pass rushing DE, CB, and LT. Hughes is the best pass rusher on the team and one of the better ones in the league judging from his production. Getting rid of Hughes isn't addition by subtraction; it's subtraction by subtraction. And he in fact won us a game last year that we had no business winning: -

More on Hughes: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2751016-nfl1000-ranking-the-top-4-3-defensive-ends-from-2017-season "13. Jerry Hughes, Buffalo Bills Pass Rush: 23/30 Run Defense: 15/20 Snap Quickness: 14/20 Tackling: 14/20 Position Value: 8/10 Overall Grade: 74/100 Jerry Hughes is one of the best speed/bend pass-rushers in the sport. After playing as a 3-4 outside linebacker for Rex Ryan, Hughes transitioned back to a full-time pass-rusher role as a 4-3 defensive end for Sean McDermott. With Lorenzo Alexander's move from 3-4 outside linebacker to 4-3 outside linebacker, Hughes had to be "the guy" for Buffalo this season. With little to no holes in his game, he should be considered an above-average starter for the position." He finished fifth in the league in qb pressures with 45 in 2017 and had his best graded game as a Bill ever in the final game this past season: http://buffalonews.com/2018/01/02/advanced-stats-jerry-hughes-erupts-for-bills-against-backup-left-tackle-vs-dolphins/ He finished 9th in pressures in 2016 too: https://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/defensive-hurries/2016/ -

Preach on! He had 45 freaking pressures - fifth in the NFL. Too many people don't know squat about his play. -
The biggest need on the Bills is QB, and it's not even close. They do not have a proven starter at the most important position in professional sports. The guy they signed is fine as a bridge/backup player, but he's actually a lesser player than the guy they traded. They will move up for the qb they want.

I keep saying this because it's true: the draft is about PROJECTION. Does past performance matter? Yes. But it's not as if Allen was bad. He took a bona fide low-talent team to a bowl win, and he lit it up at the senior bowl and combine. He is also the most physically gifted qb in this draft by far. What's left? Attitude/brain/mentality, and apparently teams love it. This is not a jeff george or jay cutler that we're talking about.

Woo hoo! So great to see ( i went to ub for undergrad). -
5th in the NFL in pressures last season with 45 and the 13th rated DE in the league last year - hardly overrated.

The Bills will trade up. I'd go as far to say that it is a lock.

Additions you like to see from here on out?

Darnold is a lock to go to the Browns at #1, unfortunately ... -
Browns are going QB with 1st pick
dave mcbride replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is so obvious that it's kinda funny that it's actually being debated. They are taking Darnold, and it is the right move. He is really good and only 20 years old. The Bills would love the chance to get Darnold - I can almost guarantee you that. -
McCarron reminds me of Colt McCoy. A very seviceable backup with a nice college pedigree and modest talent.

The browns are taking sam darnold. Take it to the bank. It's too bad because that is who i desperately want for the bills. I think the bills want him too, but realize that they have no chance. -
Sal says UFA QB's was not the Bills plan

I dunno - I’m sold on Darnold. I love his game. He is just 20 years old, you know ... -

Losing is no way to live. It merely breeds more losing. The object is to improve upon 9-7.
