  1. I really really hope you're right. I am worried that the opposite is true. If he's a Dem in the Clinton mold, I will not be as scared as I feel now. Clinton had to work the middle because he didn't have as much control as Obama will have.
  2. I agree with the chef and the police officer. My perspective is someone who does pro bono (read: needy people) family law. Help her but don't take her under your personal umbrella. The real guardian angel for an adult is someone who gets her on her own 2 feet and out on her own. That's a clinic or organization. Not Pete.
  3. Me. I posted (as it came clear that he would be the nominee) that I expected to vote for McCain. He's not perfect (only I am) but he had a nice record of both reform and working with others. I liked that on some issues I care about (moral conservatism), he stuck his finger in his party's eye. Also liked that he's a free trader. Then he picked Palin. And she turns out by every objective measure to be an unqualified disaster. Rather than admitting that and asking her to resign (which would have had its own consequences but would have been the "right" thing to do), he's stuck with her. So it's not just the choice--I don't mind that he might have thought he had someone special--it's that he stuck with her once he realized how unqualified she was. When he did this, he lost the independent vote big time. He could have chosen someone else who bolstered the religious base (which Palin did) and kept the independents. But he didn't. And down goes McCain. I'll vote Barr even though I hate him. It would be nice if the Libertarian party got a little notice in the wave of Obama-mania.
  4. I volunteer to not collect any SS if I (and my company on my behalf) only have to contribute 1/3 of what I contribute now. Deal? If I ever need to draw on SS, you can lock me in a room and feed me bread, multivitamins, and water till the day I die.
  5. Waah. Poor white people.
  6. Oh this is just great. So now the people who pay in way more into SS over their lifetimes should get less? Un !@#$ing real.
  7. I was joking. I would like to see the math though for what the market would look like before the witching hours.
  8. Trent won't be able to play in conditions like last year's Cleveland game. Therefore he sucks.
  9. If we would stop trading at 2pm every day, the market would be up 10,345 points in the last 6 weeks.
  10. And let me tell you: This one shocked me. I've heard his show man times and he strikes me as just a touch off of lockstep with the Rush/Hannity crowd but still very Republican. I couldn't beleive when I read this. I didn't add him to my list because I assumed he was more of a local phenom to Philadelphia. McCain's choice of Palin doomed his election chances. I read somewhere that this election features more independents than ever before (38%...in some states they outnumber the major parties). Think those people feel good about the selection of Palin, an ultra-right winger who doesn't read much and won't even hold press conferences? This independent would probably have voted for McCain/(almost anyone, maybe even Romney). But not McCain/Palin.
  11. He also thumped his flat tax drum, which I love but of course is a utopian dream.
  12. How about Colin Powell and the National Review's Buckley (Son of William F.)? Peggy Noonan. Kathleen Parker. George Will. Charles Krauthammer. McCain hasn't done well, especially choosing Palin. If it wasn't for Palin, I'd vote for him. I assumed my vote was going to be for McCain but she drove me right away. I can't trust someone like that to be one off the presidency. McCain's choice is at best pandering to a base I despise and at worst an irrational choice of a wholly unqualified person. You sound like that old quote from some wacko liberal when Nixon crushed McGovern, "I don't know how Nixon won. I don't know a single person who voted for him." If someone can attribute that paraphrased quote, I'd appreciate it.
  13. He was plenty critical of Bush. I don't get the impression that Steve Forbes, though conservative, is a big fan of the current administration.
  14. Darin bans most of the Democrats but they can still vote.
  15. Tell me you don't know this to be the truth. Are you really in such a bubble?
  16. He summarized the causes for the crisis: (1) Too much money printed (which caused lower lending standards) in 2004. (2) Treasury not checking the Fed's printing of the money in #1. (3) Mark to market accounting. (4) Naked short-selling. He said nos. 3 and 4 were gas on the fire and fueled the panic rather than starting it. He suggested the following fixes. (1) His biggest emphasis by far was strengthening the dollar. A weak dollar is always bad. He tied a weak currency to several recessions before and argued that a weak currency only helps with exports for a little while, and in the long run is always bad. He did not suggest a gold standard but said we should at least try to make the currency be relatively stable related to the value of gold. (Also pointed out that the dollar has been resilient through this crisis compared to gold, because no one has anywhere to put money). (2) Says we should suspend mark to market and naked short-selling. RE short-selling, we should reimplement the uptick rule that requires a stock to have an up period before you can short it. That slows a panic. (3) Encourages free trade. Is worried about Obama's anti-free trade rhetoric. Pointed out all the wealth created in the last 20 years, even in Africa, and how isolationist policies would be bad for everyone. (4) Lowering corporate tax. Says that the stimulus plans and rebates are worthless. Those are one-time shots in the arm to the economy but giving a break to companies makes them more willing to hire, which creates long-term benefits. He's skeptical of both candidates but more so Obama, though he thinks Obama's advisor Paul Voekler is smart.
  17. Too funny that when I heard about it, I thought, "Man that SOB will do anything to be right. Does the beer man take bouillon?"
  18. Nope. With Parrish back, Hardy is back to spot duty. He had his shot and didn't shine. Maybe next year.
  19. Edwards had all day to throw. It was the first game all season that the lineman were out ahead of RBs on the edge several times. Still no push up front in zone blocking situations. Preston was much much better than Fowler. No issues on shotgun plays.
  20. 25-30, 261 yards, 1 TD. Trent. Is. Awesome.
  21. Yup. Best game so far this year. Both sides of the ball and special teams. Nice bounce back from the terrible AZ game.
  22. What happened in these other games that this game will finish before them??!
  23. With Trent at QB, it's a different team.
  24. Best offense and defense they've played all year. Credit them both.
  25. SD has a losing record after today.
