  1. Do you know how many times we've heard "The military is fighting for YOU." I don't see why this turn of phrase is any different. Except that a Democrat said it so therefore, it must be wrong.
  2. Wait, what? Slavery was abolished through chalkboards and power points that got slaveholders to "see the light?" Pretty sure there might have been some name calling and worse that got this country to end slavery. Sometimes the only reasonable way to break through stupidity is to force it. See slavery. See segregation. See interracial marriage. Sometimes the majority is just wrong. The legal recourses against all of these will run their course and if they are not successful, the next round of repealing these laws will be a great victory. One way or another, we'll put this shameful chapter behind us.
  3. I'm tolerant of people being grossed out. I'm tolerant of people not wanting to have same sex marriage in their churches. I'm not tolerant of people who deny same sex couples the right to marry.
  4. I would guess and hope that he'd do what he can, and focus his efforts on other things. Hmm. Since I hate most of his economic policies, maybe I can hope he'll put all his effort into gay marriage and let someone else pay attention to the economy.
  5. Maybe you haven't noticed. It's been in the news lately.
  6. Numbers don't lie. It's the truth. Young people don't see this as an issue like old people do. When the old people die, all the man-woman laws will go away in a blink. It's hot now because attitudes are changing--it's just a matter of time before the majority on this issue favors gay marriage.
  7. Amendment One "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State [NC]. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts.”
  8. You're right: The majority is wrong. Luckily, the older portion of that majority will die off and the problem will fix itself. It's only become an issue in the last decade because the gap between those for and against gay marriage is narrowing. When the generation-self baby boomers finally keel over, gay marriage will be widely accepted and people won't understand what the big deal ever was.
  9. All Jeeps are known to go anywhere but have reliability issues. I prefer reliability but I get it. Jeeps, even GCs, are kinda awesome.
  10. Marriage between same sex people is also a religious institution. Just depends on the religion. Po-tay-toh, po-tah-to. Guess what: Marriage has evolved through ages and it continues to do so. There have been lots of "that's not alloweds" in marriage rules in different religions and still are. But this is not about those religions, it's about the legal rights given to people on getting married, and the bars to those rights that are being put in their way when you prohibit gay marriage. Pretty much. Just like even though there was a time-honored tradition of interracial marriage prohibition and a majority against allowing whites and blacks to marry, that majority was wrong.
  11. The difference is that when Jim and Joe marry, it doesn't take away from Steve and Sally the church goers rights. Except for your favorite bogeyman, the church suers.
  12. Bull. I do work in the family court system in the initial visit to the family the case worker needs to ask the parent about their work history. To save time, their first question is "Have you ever worked?" the implication being that they haven't and no history review is needed. Most times the answer is no or a vague helped out some person in the neighborhood. Don't tell me it's not a lifestyle. It is. It's sad. Awful. Entrenched. But it's reality for a lot of people.
  13. But you can still marry your sister there. As long as you're a man, that is.
  14. So Obama is for gay marriage and civil unions. Why does it matter? Because now Mitt comes out having to talk about the issue and reinforcing his opposition to it, which makes him look like a buttnugget to a whole helluva lot of independent voters. Every time he reaffirms not only his commitment against gay marriage but his opposition to civil unions, he comes across like either (a) a bigot or (b) a panderer to his base. I suspect it's a combination since he once expressed some support for civil unions. Will this issue get a ton of election play? It will now, since now their stances are different. And independent voters support gay marriage to the tune of almost 60% in some polls. It may cut against Obama with certain populations, but I applaud him for finally having the balls to say what he clearly believed, despite the political risk. I still won't vote for him but at least he has one thing I can unequivocally agree with him on. Be interesting to see if Romney, needing to now make some play for Independents and more moderates, changes his own "evolving" stance on immigration.
  15. Why do you think the rates are lower for capital gains? Do you understand the stupidity of your idea and the damage it would do?
  16. I would vote for Obama before DiN and DiE, but that's about it. It will be fun being called a liberal for the next few months because I agree with him on this issue though.
  17. I thought the Biden thing was a litmus test for Obama. If he got skewered, Obama lets the issue slide. If he got lauded, he follows Biden's lead. Same conclusion though: Just...!@#$ing politics. And no matter what Romney says about what happened with Grenell, it makes them stand in stark contrast.
  18. My grandfather was. He was also a kind and loving guy, a great father, and a great grandfather. People are complicated like that. Doesn't mean he wasn't bigoted in that he would stand in the way of someone's happiness for no good reason other than they are different.
  19. About time. The "evolving" thing was embarrassing. Welcome to this year's abortion issue, an issue that doesn't matter but will take up a ton of time.At least it's one of my favorite topics.
  20. My grandfather was opposed to his daughter marrying a black guy because it would "cause trouble" and wasn't "normal." Never heard him say boo about black people until that situation arose. You know what. He was a bigot. He didn't like someone and didn't want them to be happy based on their race. Your mom stands in the way of two people marrying who love each other for no other reason than they are the same sex. Your dad just finds it gross. That's awful.
  21. It's the mob acting within the rules. I think that was RK's point too. A fair point. Still can't convince me it's a reasonable position.
  22. She got the PR she wanted: She's just a bottom-feeding lawyer.
  23. That's not a reason'-based argument. That's a mob-based argument.
  24. "Gay people will abuse the system by marrying so they can get health benefits...it will bankrupt the (government/biz world)" is one that's come up here. You know, because heteros have not had that opportunity. "Let's just leave marriage to man-woman and call homosexual commitment something else because my book/god says that's an OK compromise." Because that makes any sense to legislate that kind of difference in treatment. We'll get there. It's not a pressing issue but it does make all the people against look bigoted and stupid. Yes OC, bigoted.
