I will add that one of the biggest sources of disagreement in the scientific community around impact of anthropogenic sources of C02 from combustion lies in what I briefly mentioned before: that is, the Ocean is a sink for carbonates, but no one knows what the equilibrium point is for the rate of uptake. If you consider that all the factors for the carbonate system (pH and speciation, temperature, salinity, etc.) and how they are all inter-related, it becomes nearly impossible to predict how much the Ocean can take before it reaches its tipping point. I suspect that the anthropogenic sources could be handled by the Ocean, but at what rate? How long will it take? These are some of the important questions that must be addressed SCIENTIFICALLY, not politically. Just because there is a consensus, or even if there is NOT one, does not mean that that a correlation does not exist. It means you can't prove it one way or the other yet. So when you hear one side claim that it's all "junk science" and the other saying that we are heading for a for sure global disaster, both are being somewhat simplistic and misleading. I would say that just about everyone could agree that we should limit our CO2 and other greenhouse gas inputs to the atmosphere, but we need to do it responsibly from an economic standpoint...

Disclaimer: This is a VERY simplistic explaination. I will not go back into Thermohaline Circulation again, I've beaten that to death, so if you want to understand why the theory of more CO2 input to the atmosphere could lead to shutdown of the conveyor (leading to dramatic impacts to Earth's climate, e.g, next Ice Age) then any Environmental Chemisty text can bring you up to speed. The Ocean is a natural sink for carbonates. So one way that historical temperatures have been estimated is by measuring the Ocean's calcium carbonate deposits. Concentration of CaCO3 can be somewhat correlated to temperature (or more correctly, concentration of C02 in the atmosphere which has been used as an metric for how warm the environment was at that point in time). For calcium carbonate, there is an inverse relationship between solubility and temperature, so more CO2 in the atmosphere - warmer atmopsheric temps - warmer seawater temperatures - less solubility of C02 in seawater - less CaCO3 build-up. The Carbonate system is VERY complicated, as CO2 dissolved in water exists as carbonic acid, pH of seawater may decrese as CO2 is taken up by the oceans. Another big unknown is the rate at which the Ocean can handle additional inputs of CO2, say from combustion engines or other anthropogenic sources...

Post college life and looking for a job
TheMadCap replied to billsfan89's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Take heart youngster, I have a graduate degree in chemistry and it took me about ten years to cement myself into a job where I started to do well enough to stop actively looking for that next job. The early part of your career is where you learn the skills that will land you the big job down the road. With your degree, I strongly recommend avoiding graduate school, as others have mentioned. As you yourself pointed out, I learned more the first month at my first actual job than in four years of graduate school. Point is, all these things take time, particularly depending on where you are located. Took about a month in Europe between first degree and graduate school. Took the budget route and slept on trains, campgrounds and hostels. Saw a Bit of the world, and used a portion of my college loan to pay for it. Best money I ever spent. Yes, I paid it back, and it was certainly something I think would be cool to do, I am not sure about these days though... -
Has the left lane become the new right?

What you and the others are describing is a condition of driving in the South. I can almost tell where you guys live by your stories. Jboys, I had to snicker reading your posts, as I just assumed you lived in NC, as a person who lied there for over 20 years I can relate. For whatever reason, people down south seem to have this need to !@#$ with others on the road. I can't explain in, but I think it tends to get better as you go north. Plez, since I know you live in Richmond, as do I, I can tell you that people in VA are light years ahead of NC when it comes to driving with a shred of decency and sense. You know that exit off 64w to Gaskins road south? Those of you not in Richmond, it is an exit from the interstate that you have people simultaneously teying to merge both to the left and right. I could not believe that people would actually let you merge over, the mast majority of the time it goes as it should, like a zipper. in NC, traffic would have backed up through the exit ramp onto the Interstate. Maybe it's just having too many people from different places move to another place, but I can spend 15 minutes in Raleigh and remember why I am glad I don't live there anymore... -
Not so. The original USFL might have survived had they kept the spring schedule. It was the foolish idea to move to a competing schedule with the NFLmthat put the final nail in the coffin. One of the major draws was that there would be football when you would normally be stuck watching baseball training league. fact is, the NFL is so huge now, that another league will never be able to directly compete. Maybe 25 years ago, but not now...

I know what you look like. You showed up to a pre tailgate party one time and got photo'd. I look like Shaggy from Scooby Doo, but my eyes are dreamy and sparkly like my friend the Gorn...

Got stopped about a mile from my house a few months ago, I came of the interstate and gunned it cause I was pissed I lost both my billiards matches. He was hiding in the grassy median between travel lanes. Had me nailed. I pulled over immediately, rolled down the window and put both hands outside the car to make him a little less nervous about approaching the car. He come up to the window and asks for my license and goes back to check my plates. When he came back about 20 seconds later, he asked me, " so where is your weapon". Huh? "I asked you before where was your weapon" I don't have one. " usually when people do that ( put hands outside the car) it means they are carrying" Oh Lord, I don't have a gun, just wanted you to know I wasn't a crazy" He laughed and let me off with a warning... -

Well, both of mine are really little, so yes, and no. However, I avoid giving my personal opinion to just about anyone, even my wife, I leave it to her to decide what she will believe or not. -

That is most deserving of a "pBills" HAHAHAHAAHAHAH!!!! The President made it political when he used executive privilege. And Dems are more than guilty of trying to distract the Sheeple from the economy with thier various tacts like the WOW, etc.

Even better, you stop the bus. You refuse to move until the student's responsible either give up thier phone numbers, and the monitor calls the parents to explain what is going on, or you call thier parents and have them meet the bus to pick up the kids. Nothing is worse than being trapped on a school bus for hours, eventually, the "good" students will either rat the bad ones out, or police thier own and make sure that they don't have to suffer for other's stupidity... -
I haven't had a chance to check out the album yet, but found the cover of the new album very interesting. Any Rush fan can see the obvious nod here, I am surprised no one has mentioned it yet!
