The tape sometimes works till you can get back to a place where the repair can be made.
30+ years ago I saw a jetway malfunction, it started to rise uncontrolled. There was a 727 at the gate, and the jetway reached the bottom of the forward door. So it lifted the door, and the plane, till the door failed. The bottom of the door was bent outward about 60 degrees. The mechanics came from the base, with a lot of heavy tool boxes, but no replacement door. I asked the guys where the door was, and found out that they were going to repair the damaged door. He said, "this anin't no 57 Chevy! When they build the fuselage, it's one piece. Then they use a template to cut the door, so no 2 doors are ever exactly alike." So 4-5 days later, the original door was repaired, and the plane went back into service, with no pressurization problems.
