I think the key was where he said "most of us grew up with...". It takes time - about a generation's worth, give or take - for a region to really identify with an expansion team, particularly when they're not mass marketed like baseball or football (e.g. like hockey).

At the same time, it's over-hyped, because the planet fundamentally doesn't care what we do - it's just going to go on its merry way with or without us. We're NOT going to destroy "the planet"...at worst, we'll destroy ourselves. But, as JA also said, there's nothing wrong with being responsible for the environment, even if global warming is a scam. Actually, I think they just add a new section to the base without taking any out. Pictures of it from a several years ago only have four sections...but more recent pictures have five.
