Actually, the American Petroleum Institute has one of the best definitions of "independent analysis" I've ever seen. Simple, concise, straightforward, accurate, comprehensive. Basically, it's: "Not us". They borrowed it from the tobacco industry.

Best book I've read in a long while was last week. A Middle Eastern history scholar working for DoD spent about 18 months in Iraq researching the insurgency, including first-person interviews, and wrote one of the most well-written and informative books I've read in a long time. He was universally scathing on the US policy towards Iraq that was singularly responsible for creating and propagating the insurgency. And the difference between his excellent book and the tripe linked above is: he didn't have an axe to grind. Soros and MoveOn.org do. It's the difference between information and propaganda.

IF this pay raise is so unnecessary, why do so many politicians have to turn to crime to make ends meet? It's clear that the real problem isn't that they're paid too much. It's that they're paid too little; their standard of living is so low they have to turn to illegal activities just to make a living. It's not their fault, it's society's, and the only solution for the government to give Congressmen more money, so that they're less inclined to turn to a life of crime.

The flip side of that is your typical gas engine you find in a car, having to provide both horsepower and torque, doesn't run optimally. Part of the efficiency of the Prius comes from being able to optimize the engine for horsepower, since the electric motor provides a good chunk of the torque. Next time I get it out somewhere I can test, I'll check the 0-60 time. It's respectable, at least.
