This Guy Gets It--Long
Crap Throwing Monkey replied to JarHeadJim's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You suppose? You DID look like that big of an ass hole in that thread. Now how long until you delete this thread as well? It's amazing how an otherwise halfway-decent thread goes all to hell as soon as you show up, simply because you're totally incapable of refraining from saying "I know you are but what am I?" -

Bush administration takes on the free press
Crap Throwing Monkey replied to cromagnum's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I think I have no problem with any administration confronting a free press. It's when they stop being confrontational and start silencing the free press that I'll start worrying. I also think that the press has to start realizing that not everything is meant for public consumption. Some things, if you report them, endanger the country. Some, if you report them, get people killed. The press generally seems to think that "free press" equates to "completely irresponsible press" (some more so than others - Geraldo as an embed in OIF springs immediately to mind as an example of gross irresponsibility; Rick Atkinson an example of the opposite). -
Not patriotic. Just safer.

103 degrees...in Oregon?!
Crap Throwing Monkey replied to cantankerous's topic in Off the Wall Archives
It's nuts. We just got another inch and a half in the past half hour. The backyard's cresting at two feet above flood stage... We've got a storm drain in the backyard...and a chain link fence with two feet of debris stacked up behind it, so none of the water can get to the storm drain. The water's just coasting along the fence until it hits the front yard, then washing into the street. This is getting faintly ridiculous. All my wife's real estate closings for the week were cancelled because the condo had its bottom TWO floors flooded out. The DC Beltway was closed by a mud slide this morning. What, am I in California suddenly or something? I didn't even know we could get mud slides in DC. -

Seattle has a beach? Who knew? -
No. Any Al Qaeda operation has been directed either at solidifying their own base or making a very public anti-American statement. Even Madrid, which was basically punishment for the Spanish government's alliance with the US over Iraq. Even Bali, which was an indirect attack at Australia for supporting the US (though it was also directed at the Indonesian government, too...for their own purposes. Indonesia is a special, messed-up case.) Hitting a sports tournament in Germany that most Americans don't even care about doesn't accomplish anything by their standards. They've already had the world stage many times over. And they don't fight "against Democracy", they fight for the Islamic Caliphite and the American hegemony that stands in their way. An operation against the World Cup in Germany doesn't advance the new caliphite or strike at American hegemony. And if they thought like you, that would be fine. They don't. They operate in an entirely different context than yours. When you understand their context, you understand that 1) there's a discernable reason behind everything they do, 2) there's a reason they DON'T do the things they don't do, and 3) your context doesn't mean jack to them. Or anyone associated with them. Or anyone fighting them. Christ..."fighting against Democracy." I didn't know anyone actually bought that line of crap. Right now they're giving me more rain. Bastards must be distant cousins of the friggin' Hockey Gods.

No, I'm saying an attack on the World Cup is highly unlikely because it doesn't fit Al Qaeda's doctrine. What's the anti-American statement they'd be making? Even if the US were still in it, hitting a game doesn't make a statement typical of AQ. Kidnapping the US team a-la Munich '72 would...but that's too low profile for Al Qaeda. Don't forget, terrorists don't just kill for ***** and giggles. They kill to send a message and achieve a goal. What their message is dictates the manner in which they operate. Al Qaeda doing anything at a World Cup match in Germany just doesn't accomplish anything for them; doesn't send anyone a meaningful anti-American message (being as how there's maybe three dozen Americans who watch it), doesn't further their anti-American goals.

Is it hot enough yet for Lana to need to go topless? Hey, I'm just asking... Here in DC, we've had about 12 inches of rain in 36 hours. A flash flood tore through the yard last night...the house is fine, the landscaping is absolutely wrecked. Worst it's been in at least 30 years...through the simple and obvious fact that the water took down a 30-year old fence. It's nuts. All things being equal, I'd rather be in bed with my wife than put up with this crap... ...wait a minute, my wife's in bed right now. Be right back... -
Nah. That would piss off everyone. They just want to piss off the US. Seriously, though...the World Cup is a high-profile target, but not a high-profile anti-American target. I can't think of a single AQ operation - including the Madrid and London bombings - that wasn't a direct anti-American statement. And there's no anti-American statement in hitting a sports tournament held in Germany that everyone BUT Americans follow...

No one drives to a WC game in a Honda Fit, either. They prance there on mass transit.

Well, yeah...but number two is riding around on horseback tossing around a stuffed goat's skin. Soccer looks kind of appealing in comparison... At least they have good enough sense not to follow basketball.
-
Yep. That's right. Italy's so good, they scored two goals in a 1-1 tie.

Supreme court takes on global warming.

That's right up there with the gems from the tobacco industry. Still and all...it's a toss-up what SCOTUS should rule (they'll rule "for" oil and "against" "big government", of course). On legal grounds...there's recent precedent for saying the EPA can regulate emissions, but no real codified legal statement saying it's within their scope, as far as I know. On environmental grounds...who gives a sh--? The SCOTUS shouldn't be making decisions based on environmental science, I think... -

Not comparing the current insurgency to Vietnam, that's for sure. The only thing Iraq and Vietnam have in common are the word "insurgency". Other than that, they're drastically different. -
I thought it said (with props to Garrett Morris): I'm gonna buy me a shotgun And kill all the whiteys I see...

Warren Buffet donates $37B...

For the record: my original post wasn't meant to criticize, it was just commenting on the irony of the second-richest guy in the world giving the lion's share of his fortune to the richest guy in the world. And among American "robber-barons"...that sort of philanthropy is par for the course, anyway. And the American middle class complained about it when the Rockefellers, Fords, and Carnegies did it a hundred years ago, too... -
How about the 'HALL OF SHAME'?

Actually, it was more like "Harbaugh sprained his hand on Kelly's head." Given Harbaugh was hurt, but Kelly wasn't (because let's face it, if you want to hurt Jim Kelly, his head is the last place you should take a shot at), I'd have to give Kelly the match on points... -

And best of all...you can drive your faggoty-ass car to Massachusetts and legally marry it...
-
Hell, why do you think they call it the Fit? I can just see how the marketing people came up with the name... "Who's our target demographic for this car?" "I dunno...how about gay rodeo clowns?" "Gay rodeo clowns? Brilliant! Now what should we call it?" "Well...since about a dozen gay rodeo clowns have to fit in it at any one time, let's call it the Honda Fit." "Brilliant!"

And what Kelly said about House Ballard was a bit ridiculous. Most of these guys say ridiculous things on occasion. If that's your qualification for a "Hall of Shame", you'll have an easier time listing those players not on it... -
...to The Bill Gates Foundation. What, Bill doesn't have enough money already? I think this makes the Gates Foundation the ninth most powerful economy in the world... http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060625/bs_nm/...tt_charity_dc_4
