Good Guys Win One
Crap Throwing Monkey replied to Ghost of BiB's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
There was an old "Law & Order" episode based on precisely this. Some gomer modifys a semi-auto gun to fire full auto and machine-guns a bunch of people. Prosecution decides to go after the gun manufacturer on the grounds that the gun was "used as designed", in that the modification to full auto leveraged a design characteristic that the company could have easily fixed but didn't, thereby creating an "inherently dangerous" product. The ultimate resolution was the judge throwing out the case and scolding pretty much everyone involved - the prosecution for trying to legislate gun control through the courtroom, and the defendants for acting irresponsibly, albiet not illegally. While I'm usually reluctant to quote "Law & Order" in a legal discussion (since it's not even remotely realistic), this episode stuck out simply as a well-balanced and intelligent investigation of both sides of the issue, neatly summed up by the judge's closing speech. -
Why so little said here on "Plamegate"?

Actually, that's exactly "disagreeing with policy-making process". The assumed process was: Cheney and Rumsfeld made the policy, handed it to Bush, Bush fronted it, everyone fell in line. Wilkerson disagrees with it. So do you, apparently. So do I, for that matter (and I believe Wilkerson in this regard. I said so way back when in the run-up to war: it had a distasteful "boys-with-toys", "We have a big-ass military, and by God we're gonna use it!" flavor to it.) Plus, presuming Wilkerson's right about the "cabal"...it's hardly news. It was reported back then that State (i.e. Powell) felt frozen out of the decision process. I'd be more worried if Wilkerson started stating otherwise right now...but the story is more or less "Wilkerson is reporting that he still believes what he told us three years ago." crap from the media. BTW, nice use of "who's" and "whose". Gold star for you. -
Do what I did...find a Jim Jones avatar.

Holy Christ. Way to TOTALLY miss the point, Ed.

I am gonna stick ferrets down my pants!

The ferrets will probably be awful lonely down there... -
That in general was a very funny show. Couldn't have cost too much (relative to sitcoms) to do, either...pre- and post-production costs were probably roughly the same, but one three-hour performance could net them two or three shows, virtually no writers (since it's improv), no new sets, new props were rare and cheap as hell. Why ABC was as stupid as they were to cancel it is unfathomable.

What's your point, that Wilkerson disagrees with the administration's decision-making process? Because that's really the only hard fact in all that...and that has about as much to do with Wilson lying as Wilson lying has to do with outing his wife. -
It's official! Iraq has a democracy!
Crap Throwing Monkey replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
That applies to a LOT that goes on in the government, not just Iraq. When people can approach their jobs with the idea that "In two/four/six years, it's the other guy's problem", there's not a hell of a lot of motivation for long-term planning. -
I haven't seen a survey that matches those criteria in ages.

I think the bigger question is: what are you doing with a hoard of ants?

Let's be fair, though...VABills ain't impotent. He's a short little prick, but he does stand as tall as he can.

Once you get the tennis ball out...

Yeah...but I'm taller.

I look at the IR image, and I see asymmetry. It's not that difficult. As for knowing asymmetry demonstrates/causes instability that weaken a storm...studied galactic dymanics in college. Though the mechanics differ, the dynamics of spiral galaxies and hurricanes are not that dissimilar...
-
That's wild. The IR satellite shows a pretty asymmetrical formation, though. It won't maintain this strength for long at all. Not like Katrina, which was unusually symmetric and self-sustaining.

The Universe: What's The Deal?

Nothing precludes God creating man via the evolution of apes, though. The real issue traditional Christianity has with evolution is that Genesis says God gave Man dominion over all the beasts of the earth. But evolution says man is equivalant to those same beasts. Ergo, one or the other must be wrong, since Man can't both be above the beasts and one of them. Of course, that's only a problem if you believe a literal reading of Genesis. Aside from that one chapter of the Old Testament, I know nothing that precludes saying, for example, that evolution is the divine plan through which God exercises creation. -
Only around people who are too stupid to work a car alarm.

Considering that precisely zero turkeys have been infected in this country so far... The article in National Geographic made an interesting point, though: the powers-that-be don't necessarily know how it's being spread from bird to human as of the writing (which I assume was about four months ago). The necessary investigation hadn't been done at the time; it could have been inhaled droplets, inhaled dust from bird droppings, ingested, etc. And the CDC's answer to the question was just waffling enough to make me believe that the epidemiology still hasn't been done in that regard.

It's official! Iraq has a democracy!
Crap Throwing Monkey replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I thought it was only one. If it's three...well, hell, that's just stupid. Even our constitution effectively required unanimous ratification by the original states (though I don't know if one non-ratification would have submarined the Constitution, or merely kept the non-ratifying state out of the union.) And on a completely different note...I was at the Jefferson Memorial this weekend. I never realized that Jefferson was 32 when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. When I was 32...I can't think of a single significant thing I'd accomplished. -

"Curious" is certainly a word for it. A 150%+ increase in voter turnout doesn't necessarily indicate something rotten's going on...but it certainly deserves close examination. And that was a very well-balanced article. Probably better than anything we'll ever hear from any mainstream. -
