The Patriots have a LOT to prove before they are anywhere close to the Bills. The Dolphins and Jets may give us some problems, the Patriots are just the AFC East’s doormat.

Oh this will take a couple years but they’re coming.

I'm worried about a 2nd round pick that can't beat out Demar Hamlin for 1st team reps. It's just an observation, wondered if anyone else felt the same and they dont....noted.

Can’t beat out? Why do fans think like this? It’s day 5 of camp. At least start worrying after you watch the rookie play a snap.

Allen can’t kick FGs and catch passes. If the the 2023 Bills could have done those things 2% better we win it all.

Maybe. Allen is blameless 2/5 years in the playoffs. So he does have some blame for the Bills not winning a Super Bowl.

Facts are Allen is the biggest reason we are a Super Bowl contender. He will win one someday. I hope it’s more of a Peyton Manning path than a Matthew Stafford path.

He isn’t horrible.  But he doesn’t make many game changing plays either.  After this many years, he understands the Bills defense and must be decent on special teams.  But there must be some upside to keep a guy on an NFL roster.  I have never liked McDermott’s philosophy of keeping guys primarily for special teams.  They should have some value as backups on O and D too. I think of Siran Neal and Tyler Matekevich.  What a waste.  They could not really play D.  And they were meh on ST’s and Neal was worse than that at the end.     I hope the bottom of the roster is stronger going forward.  I think it will be.

Right now Cam Lewis is our number 1 slot depth. That’s more of his natural position. He’s played every DB position though. The Justin Jefferson play we all remember he was playing safety.

He’s not really special teams depth. He’s a key player. I don’t see any other slot depth on the roster. He’s a roster lock.

I was watching the Netflix Receivers series and they just had to show that Justin Jefferson catch where Lewis should’ve knocked it down instead of trying to catch it.  He should be cut just because of that.

Cam plays every DB position. He doesn’t play them good but he’s decent enough that he makes sense to keep on the roster.

I thought he improved last year.

I get this is how people talk today. But it still misrepresents what's happening.

It works really well to puff up the ego of whoever gets the contract.

But the time scheme makes it nonsense.

They say four years $220M. So you just divide $220 by four, right? Well, wrong. Because the $220 is correct, but it will in fact be paid over five years. $75M of it has already been paid.

So those numbers are not the reality in either cash terms nor cap terms.

    In cash, he'll be receiving a total of $79M in 2024, $13M in 2025, $51M in 2026, $43M in 2027 and $45M in 2028.

    By comparison, his cap hit will be $20.7M in 2024, $29.7M in 2025, $36.1M in 2026, $42.4M in 2027 and $74M in 2028.

So overall, he's not getting $220M for four years. He's getting in real terms, $224M in five years. (Still a hell of a lot of money, obviously, but not as much as it's spun to be.)

Same with everyone else. Anyone getting an extension can, and these days do, misstate the value by ignoring the other year(s) he's signed for.

Agents always talk in terms of “new money”.

    Nah that's just a guess

What we know is he took two million less/yr than top of the market at the time in exchange for most guaranteed money

It was a bargain then and now, using % of cap at signing to prove otherwise is very disingenuous

It’s definitely a bargain. You’re looking at it the wrong way. It’s a bargain because of the drop in revenue.

Kyler Murray got $46 million the next season. The Bills got a little lucky. There was a lot of uncertainty about the cap in 2021. Allen could’ve risked it and played out the year. He probably gets close to $50 million if he does that. Russell Wilson got $49 million. Rodgers got $50 million. That’s where Allen would’ve been.

    His AAV is $43M

Using percentage of cap at signing in the one year the salary cap actually decreased due to COVID is nonsense

He would’ve gotten more than $43 million without the decrease in revenue that year.

I'll just leave it at this.  If Josh signed for $43M in 2021 and the cap went up $10M instead of down $15M his % of cap would of

been 20.5% instead of 23.5%.  That's all I'm trying to say.  The math doesn't lie.

Why would he take less? That doesn’t make any sense.

I think you are missing my point.  You quoted Allen in the 23% and others around 20%, that's the "difference" I'm talking about.

GMs owners and agents also knew that the Covid was just a "glitch" in the cap increases.

Mahomes got 22.7%. Allen signed next.

Mahomes, Allen, and Burrow are the 3 QB’s to set the market. Each one got more than the other.

I agree with your premise about the % of cap at signing and the dollar cost of the contract.

One thing that is different is Josh Allen signed during the cap decrease due to the Covid issues in the NFL.

If the cap went up instead of down his % would be a good bit lower at signing.

The other thing that makes Josh's contract better is the 6-year length instead of the "now normal" 5 year for franchise QBs.

For those wondering, Tua's 4-year contract is no doubt due to his health risks.

Doubt it. He just would’ve gotten more money.

What are yours? It's been reported he had a tibial plateau fracture. I know enough about medicine to know its a bad injury.  Usually destroys cartilage in knee.

Then you should educate yourself on tibial plateau fractures.

Saying he’s obviously struggling is a crazy take.

Take off the rose colored glasses. Milano is obviously struggling.  Not pushing off on injured leg. Coming back from very serious injury. He may never be the same

    That’s a crazy take.

  14. Jordan Love - 21.5 % of the cap at signing

Tua - 20.7 % of the cap at signing

Allen - 23.5% of the cap at signing

Allen at the same rate would get $60 million AAV. But he will probably get or top Burrow’s rate of 24%. Plus he won’t sign a new deal until at least next year. As I pointed out earlier, Allen will get around $65 million AAV when he signs his next deal.

Can’t look at a contract signed today and compare it to one signed 3-4 years later. Not in the NFL with the cap always rising.

    Not bad for one season.

Glad, more and more each season, that we have Josh

Because he’s worth what he gets and will get. The worst thing is to have a QB making elite money that’s not elite.

Love Keon's answer to the last question if as a rookie is it fast and is he still trying to figure things out — no, not at all because he's been studying.

Very, very early on but love the reports of his play and his preparation and demeanor.

Keon definitely seems to be 100% focused on football. It’ll pay off for him.
