I don't know which is worse... Wanting your (supposed) favorite team to lose or forgetting how to spell.

Will we make history if we bring back Gailey?
BuffaloWings replied to st pete gogolak's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know...we got experience when Jauron & Gailey were hired and look how that turned out. I can understand the desire for an experienced head coach, but you want one who has been successful in his career. Those are few & far between and likely won't come to Buffalo. If a coaching change is to happen, Zimmer, Ray Horton, & Bruce Arians are guys that the front office should be looking at. -

Why aren't NFL games played on Saturdays?
BuffaloWings replied to stevestojan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And when the NFL Network showed up. -
Agreed. The only other possible one is Cincy-Baltimore, but I think they're both already in.

Saints vs Cowboys-Ot screw-up by the refs?
BuffaloWings replied to Zona's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Amazing...a lot of controversial rulings today. The Ravens just got hosed by the refs on a should've-been TD, but ended up with a FG. Watch the Giants win this game by 4 points. -
Why aren't NFL games played on Saturdays?
BuffaloWings replied to stevestojan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Better question is...what happened to the old late-season Saturday afternoon games? Once the college season had wound down, they used to play two games on Saturday afternoon in weeks 15-16. Would have been nice for me yesterday, as I was home all day. -
Details? Link??? Bueller????

I know what you're saying here - I always had thought that running QBs would never have successful careers in the NFL (barring a few exceptions - Steve Young comes to mind), but I'm backing off that thought for now. With the recent success of guys like Cam Newton, RG III, and Russell Wilson, we may be seeing a different trend. Now, I know those three haven't been in the NFL very long at all (two of them are rookies) and Newton has had a sub-par 2nd year, but I'm still going to wait and see how those three do over the next 2-3 years. I think the key is for them to become better pocket passers (a la Peyton Manning), which allows them to use their running ability. Michael Vick did this to an extent and has been pretty successful in his return - this injury-riddled, lack of a productive offensive line season aside.

If Gailey is retained how bout Alex Smith?
BuffaloWings replied to 26TrapDraw's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand the reasons for continuity, but why continue with something that isn't working or shows no signs of improvement? I made this claim after Jauron's 3rd year. That said, perhaps there is something in the works that would allow Gailey another year or two. It's clear to everyone (despite what Nix & Gailey are saying) that Fitz isn't the answer. So, I can see the Bills moving up to draft a QB in round 1 or 2. Word has it that Buddy was scouting Tarvaris Jackson during his time in San Diego and really wanted him, but he was gone by the time they wanted to draft him. Perhaps with Jackson on board, they move up to get Geno Smith and have a couple of QBs that Gailey could use in his system. With Jackson having a year in Gailey's offense (I know...he hasn't played), then I can see Fitz being let go, Jackson starting the season in 2013, and then playing Smith when he's ready. Don't get me wrong - I wouldn't be upset if Gailey's gone and they bring in some new blood, as much as I've been frustrated with Gailey's play-calling and in-game management. But I still can't see him being let go now. If the above plan doesn't work after the next year or so, then it's time. What really should happen is that Gailey needs to hand the play-calling duties over to someone else. It really hasn't worked with him trying to do that and manage the game simultaneously. -
Nick Saban may want back in NFL
BuffaloWings replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"Quitting" (as you put it) isn't the case here...if Shaw gets an offer, it's viewed as a promotion. Do you think Harbaugh "quit" to take the 49ers job? Quitting is Saban leaving Miami because he couldn't cut it. Quitting is Petrino leaving Atlanta because he couldn't cut it. -

NFL Playoff expansion????
BuffaloWings replied to KellyToTasker's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This. Like expansion has diluted the professional sports leagues over the years, adding more playoff teams would dilute the playoffs. I agree the Bills would have a better chance and it's good for the league ($$$$), blah, blah, blah....but just be prepared for the quality of play to diminish a tad. Think of it this way - if they had 8 teams from each conference get in, the Jets would be in right now and play the Texans in round 1. Yes...I said the Jets. The team whose QB fumbled because he ran into his own lineman. -

I think it'll be a fun game to watch, as long as San Fran is on their game. For some reason, I don't see Kaepernick pulling this one out, though. They're still the class of the AFC and certainly made a statement on Monday night, but let's not let one game dictate the Superbowl participants. They're still not the #1 seed right now and will probably have to win on the road to get to the big game. Not that they can't, but if they have to play the AFC championship game in Houston, I think the Texans will remember this shellacking. PLEASE GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've never been more sick and tired of two teams in my life. -
Nick Saban may want back in NFL
BuffaloWings replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm wondering the same thing. Alabama was a national champ in his third year...that's pretty quick. He *may* be a good NFL coach, but all we have to go on is his 2 years in Miami. Yes, you can look to his DC days in Cleveland, but that was early-mid 90s. I just think he's a good college coach, but may not cut it in the NFL. -
With the defense rising, does Wanny get another shot?
BuffaloWings replied to Rubes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think this is all a moot question...it all depends on whether or not Gailey gets another year. If he's gone, the new HC may or may not replace him with his own guy. We can argue that the D has gotten better or whether or not they're better than the Giants or Patriots, but it won't matter if Gailey is let go. All bets are off if he's fired. -
Can Bills keep Jets from playoffs?
BuffaloWings replied to ALLEN1QB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I know their schedule helps, but I doubt they'd be in a position to sneak in come Week 17. That said, if they have a shot, knocking them out would be sa-weet! -

I told my buddy last night that it's just too easy for them. With the refs giving them every break possible, something fishy is still going on. It's not possible that Wes Welker is WIDE OPEN on every play, unless New England knows what's coming. Yes, you still have to execute and make the plays, but this is just ridiculous. -
[closed]Next Bills HC should be .....
BuffaloWings replied to merlin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is part of Reid's problems...while I understand the desire for the head coach to also be the GM, it just seems that performing both duties is too much for a guy to have and win at the same time. There's too much work to do with roster management in addition to preparing the game plan each week. Parcells had this when he was with the Jets - had one good year, then bottomed out. Mike Holmgren had this in Seattle - the team underperformed after their Superbowl appearance. I'm all for giving Arians a shot. He's basically doing the job now and (so far) doing it well, especially given Pagano's illness. -
Some observations on this season NFL wide
BuffaloWings replied to djp14150's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Seeing the dilution of the league was probably the result of expansion...that's definitely the case in baseball. More teams = more opportunities for "lesser" players to make the team. That said, I enjoy the parity. I like it when 4-5 teams still have a shot at the playoffs in Week 15 or 16. Even if the Bills are out of it, I like watching the intense games with the season on the line. It certainly makes things less stressful - unless I'm watching the Patriots, where I'm begging for them to lose. -
Why would we want to make the playoffs?
BuffaloWings replied to Bills Fan since '64's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Right....we could at least say we made the playoffs and then have some other team with the distinction of having the longest playoff drought. -
Would you take this if there were no other option?
BuffaloWings replied to cmjoyce113's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agreed, except for maybe in San Francisco's case. Yes, they had Alex Smith, but he had shown nothing until Jim Harbaugh showed up. Funny thing...I almost threw Mike Tomlin into that list, but I actually thought what you said - he already had a franchise QB and solid defense in place. I guess you can say the pieces were in place for each of these teams, but they needed a guy to pull them all together in the right way. -
He falls in love with the pass - he's always had a run-and-gun offensive mind, which is probably (now that I think about it) what got him let go in Kansas City when he and Todd Haley were butting heads. There are no answers. He saw it himself against Jacksonville last week - I don't see why he didn't use the same blueprint just because the weather wasn't as bad. Of course, when it comes time to kick a 52-yard FG, the weather probably was horrible.

All of this. When John Harbaugh started with the Ravens in 2008, I thought it was lightning in a bottle. But we're seeing more & more young or new-to-the-NFL coaches come on the scene and have success almost immediately. Schiano, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Smith, & Chuck Pagano (though Bruce Arians is an NFL veteran) have all had success in their first year as HC. It really is time to get someone with drive, hunger, and - most importantly - enthusiasm. I don't count Pete Carroll as new because he has been a head coach in the NFL, but I love the enthusiasm and excitement he brings to a team. Besides, he can now buy players a new house and won't get disciplined for it! I'm all for the continuity thing, unless there's no improvement..which there hasn't been. I like Chan, but he's not getting it done. Apparently, you still can't teach an old dog new tricks.
