  1. At this point, I'm just going to sit back and wait for a coach to be hired. Every single name that has popped up in the past 24 hours has been shot down for one reason or another. Seems like we have 900 GMs on this board who wouldn't be happy if we hired Tom Landry, Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Bill Parcells, or Vince Lombardi.
  2. Correct...I did say that it could be a big name, but should have also said that the front office *usually* doesn't choose the coordinators.
  3. Also remember...the front office doesn't choose the coordinators, the head coach does. It drives me nuts when I hear wishes for a certain head coach and a certain coordinator who was a former head coach. The head coach will want his guy. It may be a big name, but don't count on it.
  4. Who knows...maybe he liked his situation in Arizona. I hope they call Ken Whisenhunt. As soon as I heard that he got the axe, I thought this was the guy to go after.
  5. Certainly can't disagree with this, but then we can get into the whole Trent Dilfer/Brad Johnson debate.... While I love watching Griffin and think he's a classy kid, I'd like to see how he does in the next year or two. Right now, he's the man, but history has shown me that the league usually adjusts to new successful QBs after a year or so. Even if we look at Cam Newton right now, he had a tough sophomore season...let's see how he adjusts to the league adjusting to him. Regarding Shanahan, don't forget he had a losing stint with the Raiders, too. His success and reputation was based on the two Superbowls he won with Elway and Terrell Davis. Let's not forget that Elway didn't win until he had a solid running game to back him up.
  6. As am I. Kuechly is good and the Bills certainly could have used him, but with the way the defensive backfield regressed last year, Gilmore wasn't a bad pick, either. If they picked ahead of Carolina, I'd bet Buddy still would have gone with Gilmore.
  7. I just don't know... His track record from the early years is good and he's got a good offensive mind. The sign of a good coach, though, is to get his team to win despite injuries and/or playing with less talent than the opposition. He hasn't done that very well. It took four years to get his elite team to the Superbowl, when they were in the NFC Championship game each of those years (three of which at home). His team underachieved since then, outside of 2008 when McNabb had his last hurrah and *almost* got them to the big game. During those elite years, the defense was run by Monte Kiffin, then the late Jim Johnson...both great defensive coaches. With his family issues going on and how he (I believe) is also the GM or has plenty of power in the personnel area, his team significantly took a step back. If he wants to coach again now, I'd pass on him. For his sake, I hope he takes a year off and gets everything straightened out.
  8. You cited two good examples, but I still think that a win to knock us down a peg in the draft order isn't worth getting our panties in a bunch over. I just find it hard to justify rooting for my team to lose so that we draft #6 instead of #8. Given the draft history, who's to say that the front office would have drafted the "right guy", anyway?
  9. Bruce Arians. I think he's the best mix of experience and "new" head coach we can find.
  10. I'd rather they keep both Byrd & Levitre.
  11. Didn't John Clayton say the same thing? Boy, now there's an indictment if I've ever seen one.
  12. Why do most people want more DEs? Do we think Mario, Mark Anderson, & Kyle Moore are so thin that we need to draft a DE before a LB?
  13. I just can't see them (well, ok...I don't WANT them to) not pick a LB in the first 2 rounds. To me, it's the biggest weakness on the defensive side of the ball. How many fewer yards would they give up on the ground if they had a Patrick Willis/Von Miller type middle LB? This is why I like Te'o...I'd be pleasantly surprised to see him at 8. My wish for a QB is either Glennon, Dysert, or Landry Jones.
  14. Jim Kelley passed away over two years ago. Jim Kelly is the guy the OP is talking about. Now that we're clear about that, carry on...
  15. Precisely the reason I'll be watching.
  16. It certainly has worked with the likes of Jim Harbaugh, but just remember that NFL teams don't necessarily hire "new" faces because they're an unknown (as to how well they can coach at this level). The "retreads" get rehired because of the idea that they have experience and could do well in their second time around. That usually only works with the hall of fame-type coaches, but John Fox had success in Carolina and now in Denver and even Jeff Fisher is starting to turn things around in St. Louis. That said, the league has had a really good stretch of new head coaches doing well - both Harbaughs, Mike Smith, for example. We could even say that guys like Mike McCarthy, Leslie Frazier, and Sean Payton have all had good success in their first stint as coaches. Frazier may be a bit of a stretch, but the Vikings are in the playoffs as of today in his second year. I guess my point is that if a "retread" is hired, it really needs to be the right guy in the right situation. Many of us wanted an experienced coach after Gregg Williams and Mike Mularkey. Well, we got it...twice. It can work, but not always.
  17. This is why I wouldn't be upset if they ended up with a stub LB in round 1. I don't think I need to remind everyone that the run defense has been God awful against good teams and good RBs...San Fran, New England, Chris Johnson, etc. Getting a Patrick Willis or Von Miller type would work for me. I know QB is a need, but if the right one isn't there when they pick in round 1, then go with a Manti Te'o or someone to fill that mold.
  18. But it then turned back to a horrible situation. All you needed to see was Stevie Johnson's spike after his TD catch in Toronto. The frustration he showed tells me that the players are not in tune with what the coaching staff is doing - on either side of the ball. It's time to make a change. I hate doing this every three years, too, but continuity doesn't make sense when the status quo isn't working - or even showing signs of improvement.
  19. Barkley? Seriously???? He's just as overrated as Sanchez, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, and Todd Marinovich. I think Smith is the better option because he has the arm strength & accuracy, and has at least played in weather colder than 60 degrees.
  20. It's not as if every commentator to go back into coaching wasn't successful. Parcells did TV work...he seemed to do ok when he went to New England.
  21. As of now, there are too many QB-needy teams ahead of them. Even if Tim Tebow is sent to Jacksonville, KC, Oakland, Philly, & Arizona are ahead of Buffalo in the draft order right now. If the Bills win this week, it's possible the Jets will jump ahead of them, too. I'm still intrigued by the possibility of Geno Smith, but unless the Bills trade up, he won't fall to them. Buddy will have to make a move like the Redskins did last year to get to 2nd and pick Griffin.
  22. Seattle's now in. So, the Giants needs Dallas, Chicago, and Minnesota all to lose. Funny how they could be rooting for the Redskins....
  23. I will say "you never know". Teams have gone from good to bad in 1 season before, but it's way too early to be worried about the 2013 opponents. We'd have to see what happens between now & training camp - whether or not there's a new coaching staff, who they draft, who's at QB, etc, etc. One thing is for sure...I'll spot two losses to New England right now.
  24. And here's the reason I'd want to see him. Jauron & Gailey showed no fire - which isn't to say they didn't have any, but on the surface, it appears like they have no motivation or heart when a bad call goes against them or a player makes an outstanding play. But because he's Gruden, he might get a little more of the microscope than a small market team like Buffalo would show. Either way, I don't think he'd be bothered by the attention. He's a football guy - he'd worry about the media stuff last.
