One interesting thing I heard Beane mention recently in an interview was some of the benefits of having camp away from home - players immersed and not distracted by family obligations etc, forced bonding in close quarters etc.

I went for a few days a couple weeks ago - first time I had gone in probably 10 years - and also noticed less easy access to be closer to the field (I remember being able to wander around the fence close to the field and being able to pick and choose and get close to various drills/players over the course of practice). At the end of one of the practices we ended up talking to a guy who has worked the camp for years - he mentioned that McD is much more focused on actual effective practice for the players than "fan experience". He mentioned the clusterF last year where players were off on the other fan-inaccesible field to give the main field a break where fans who showed up couldn't even see the players and people who worked there were like "really coach?" but he stuck to his guns (the reason for the closed to the public practices this year). He implied that the new regime is pretty demanding and very specific on their requirements during the camp. Not sure why fan accessibility and effective practice need to be exclusive - but imagine some of it is to try to minimize distractions - and I'm sure there is probably an amped up security aspect in this day and age. BTW - one of the days I actually had VIP tickets - and the actual view of practice (other perks notwithstanding) from those areas wasn't necessarily better than just being in the stands. Being on the field but restricted to small area makes it hard to see all that is going on (overall view of practice was much better from the stands)

The Polish Rifle (recycling is good for the environment) -
I mentioned in the game thread those are the kind of throws that a normal QB usually chucks up and if it gets completed it is because it ends up being woefully underthrown and the receiver makes a play to come back for it - but that throw was right on the money over the defender in perfect position. It was a crazy throw under pressure.

Good Night / Bad Night - Pre-season Game 1

Boettger had a great block on Murphy's TD run. re: Allen - Joe Montana wouldn't have looked comfortable with that 3rd string offense. On the contrary I thought Allen showed great poise with all the chaos around him. There are some people also questioning 'decision making' which I don't get -= aside from the 4th down play I didn't see any other bad decisions. Allen was in a tough spot - after McBeane saying how important the preseason would be to assess whether he moves up in the order, I think he really felt compelled to try to make things happen. One other thing that is tough for Allen is that even if he gets some time with 1's/2's, he's at a disadvantage at this point because of so few reps with them - he doesn't have the same comfort/chemistry as Peterman/McCarron. The way it's been set up, it seems his fate to move up is/was predicated more on Peterman/Mcarron doing bad (and moving down) than anything he could do well. I imagine it must be very frustrating trying to show what you can do with a bunch of scrubs who can't block, line up, or run a route properly. With the way it's been set up, I don't see how he 'moves up' unless Peterman or Mcarron really crap the bed. -
The throw to Lee was actually crazy good as well. It wasn't like most of those type of throws where the QB is scrambling and throws it up off their back foot and it gets completed because it is underthrown and the receiver makes an adjustment and comes back for it - it was still put right on the money over the defender
