Why Does Anyone Give A $#!+ About Soccer
ajzepp replied to Steely Dan's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Totally agree. I remember back when I was a kid, there was a pretty long stretch where I didn't have cable. I used to love it when we'd go visit extended family who had ESPN, cause I'd watch the Aussie League Football matches and just love it. I had no idea wtf was going on, or what it meant when they kicked the ball through the one set of poles vs. the other, but I'll be damned if that wasn't some fun sh-- to watch! I think true sports fans are lovers of competition, period. I may not watch much NBA during the reg season, but I love it during the playoffs when it's all on the line. I have no idea if the sport of water polo is even played professionally or what outside of Olympic competition, but I LOVE watching it every four years. Sports kick ass in general....just so happens that there are a few of us (what are we up to now, about nine? lol) who like it in the form of soccer more than most -
Why Does Anyone Give A $#!+ About Soccer

I love almost any sport, including baseball, but the baseball of my youth is gone. I totally agree that it's become a complete disgrace, and I'll never be able to recapture what it was like to be a baseball fan as a kid. With soccer it's been almost the exact opposite. Being that there's quite literally an entire WORLD of great soccer out there to discover, my love for the game in terms of being a spectator has grown exponentially over the last ten years or so. Whether it's the top national leagues around the world, the Champions League, the Gold Cup, Euro Cup, World Cup, etc, etc, etc, etc....there is great soccer being played everywhere. I could turn on a game and have no fuggin clue about either team, and sometimes not even understand the language in which its being broadcast....but I'll watch the entire match and love every minute. It still takes a back seat to the NFL for me, but the game has become a solid second in terms of what I look forward to watching. -

Why Does Anyone Give A $#!+ About Soccer

The only ones who think soccer players are sissies are the ones who have never played the game competitively. Outside of the skill it takes to control and maneuver the ball, there is a physicality to it that most people don't even realize. I played up until my late teens as a defender and midfielder and I put people in the ground every match. -

I'm disappointed in you, Steely Dan!!! -
The thing about the prequels is that they have ROTJ syndrome. If you take out the Ewoks and a few other choice elements in ROTJ, you have a pretty damn good film. The scenes with Luke and Vader and some of the most intense in the entire dual trilogy. In fact, I typically consider the Luke hiding/Vader taunting scene at the end of ROTJ to be *the* most intense and emotional sequence in any of the movies. Then I saw Ep.III and the Anakin/Obi Wan scene edged it out a bit for me. But anyway, the point is that about half of ep.I was pretty damn good. It's the other half and the kiddie elements that screws it up for most people. The Darth Maul scenes are really good, IMO. The only thing I didn't like about that character was his untimely end. In AOTC, there is even less to like IMO, but something like the Yoda/Dooku battle was pretty cool. The whole awkward Leia/Anakin romance thing screwed up Ep.II, but there is other stuff there to like. With Ep.III, I feel that the entire second hour is just plain awesome. It's the payoff for everything we had to endure in the first two prequels, and IMO it's very satisfying. Okay, so here are my rankings: 1) Ep.IV...can't help it, it's the venerable classic! 2) Ep.V...most complete film of the two trilogies 3) Ep.III...the second half is just awesome...great ending. 4) Ep. VI...get rid of the furry JarJars and you have a damn good movie. 5) Ep.I...I'll never forget the anticipation and excitement surrounding this film. Better than most give it credit, IMO! 6) Ep.II...I come back to this one the least, plain and simple. Just isn't much here for me to grab on to. Lastly, I want to say that in response to the idea that Mr. George Lucas raped my childhood....I proudly proclaim, "thank you sir, may I have another!"

I agree, but when I see progress in areas that really bother me, I feel good about things. We've got to be able to score on quality teams OTHER than Donovan hitting a PK, and I think they proved they are getting better in that area, both against Spain and Brazil. Aggression is improved, their using their physical advantage more effectively, and they are showing more thought in terms of how they're setting up their shots. I saw a much more complete team these last three games than I did the first few. Long way to go? Sure, but we're closer now than we were before, IF they can build off of this success. -
I have a '79 RX-7 in blue with the rotary engine sitting about 20' away from me. I agree, it was a great car!

Riemersma points to divine intervention

Home opener in 1997 against the Vikes, Collins hit Riemersma with an over the shoulder TD pass....must have been a good 25-30 yards. I was sitting about 20 rows up behind the endzone....it was a beauty! I really thought Collins, Rimersma, A.Smith, and a few others were going to take this team to new heights. Then Robert Smith went apeshiit and we lost the game. -

I tend to feel the same way....if not for the '95 Braves, I'd honestly feel like I was the cause of some sort of curse! My teams: Bills (became fan in 1985) 0-4 in Championships Braves (became fan in 1980) 1-4 in Championships Flyers (became fan in 1996) 0-1 in Finals since I've been a fan Sixers (became fan in 1996) 0-1 in Finals since I've been a fan So that's 1-10!!! -

Wow, what a game...I tell you what, I'm excited about US soccer for the first time in months. They came into this tourney with the same lazy, undisciplined crappy play they'd been exhibiting for a while, but left the tourney as legit International contenders. I don't know WHY they have all of a sudden found the desire to play with aggression and heart, but I hope they don't lose what they've found. Hell, even Donovan impressed the hell out of me today. I wish to God that they could have held on to win this game, but it's okay. They've never even been to the finals before, so to finish in 2nd is huge. Brazil is arguably the best team in the world, and to have beaten the TWO best teams in the world in one tourney would be a lot to ask of our guys. That being said, they almost did exactly that, and I'm proud as hell of them. I cannot WAIT until the WC next year. I had an absolute blast watching the matches and discussing them with all you guys on here in 2006, and I can't wait to do it again next year. In the meantime, I hope Team USA continues to grow as a team and nurtures that winning attitude that they displayed over the past few games. U-S-A!!!!!! -

That's a badass car, man. That's the one i mentioned above....I read about a comparison among it, the civic Si, and the VW GTi. I remember them being most impressed with the Mazda. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...rticleId=116868 Scott: Black rules

I'm glad to keep hearing reports of McCargo's efforts thus far. I hope they can translate into on-the-field dominance! He's definitely had a few moments, so if he can become a a more consistent force in our front 7, we're going to be much improved on D.
