  1. I disagree. The biggest determiner of how often a team will or will not get points on any given drive is their average drive start. The Bills led the NFL in average drive start by over 2 yards over second place New England because of their special teams. It cannot be overstated how important this is. Really, how much of an impact is the 5th linebacker going to have on any given team? The guy is there to play special teams, even if he sucks at them, he is gonna be on the special teams regardless. Might as well have a guy that is actually good at it versus a guy that just sucks...

Really, average drive start is incredibly important. I mean we led the NFL, and it really has paid off for us in the Win Loss column. :wallbash:

I must say it is nice to have something on the team to be proud of - but I'd much rather have a seriously stout defense and offensive line...

  2. I like rooting for the underdog. As a Bills fan, that's a neccessity I guess. This year I'll pick the Ravens. Eagles and Steelers will be favored, and I just can't get too excited about the Cardinals.

Why not? Most of their fans are bandwagon fans. When they struggled they weren't coming close to filling their stadium. And speaking of stadiums, their new domed stadium is for wimps. I lived in Phoenix for 5 years, working outside. If Buffalo and Pittsburgh teams (and fans) can weather the cold, they ought to be able to handle the heat (remember, it's a dry heat).

Go Ravens! Tough as nails defense, solid rookie QB. Sound running game. It all makes me jealous (except the Willis part).

  3. You realize 3 of the 4 teams left have the top 3 statistically ranked defenses?

Pitt #1 d. Baltimore #2 and Philly # 3. There's nothing average about the defenses of these teams. It stands to reason the best way to build a winning team is to build your defense and get by with an average offense predicated on a strong running game, and game management.

And after this weekend, there will be nothing left but teams with defenses ranked in the top 3.

I agree wholeheartedly, if you want a better than average ability to make the playoffs (and win once in them), you need a superior defense. One with at least a couple top notch playmakers who can lead. One that has attitude, that punishes opposing teams. Something severely lacking w the Bills. We came closest of late w the Wade Philips - Ted Cottrell teams. long gone...

  4. It's hard for me to feel "good" about the Patriots fate. I'd give anything to be in their shoes right now. Let's see, would I rather be 7-9 for the year, 0 fer 6 against the East, w a team in a death spiral for the last 10 games, and talks of blowing it all up again? Or be a team w loads of talent and a great coaching staff who got better as the year progressed and ended a sliver away from the playoffs at 11-5, even though their starting QB went down early? Hmmm, that's a tough one.

Taking satisfaction in the Patriots not making the playoffs is like being glad that your Wall Street broker only got a 2 million dollar bonus this year (instead of their usual 10 mil), while your 401K took a 40% ytd raping and is still heading south. Yeaahhh I'm so happy!!!

  5. This from the Buffalo News: What is Ralph saying about his coaches contract?!?:

"Shock, exasperation and anger were the prevailing emotions for the Bills afterward.

Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. could only shake his head in disbelief after leaving the locker room.

Had he seen anything like it? "Never," he said.

Wilson tried to crack a half-hearted joke, saying, "I think I should get back into the insurance business."

But don't get the wrong impression. Wilson wasn't in a joking mood. Asked again to comment on the much-reported contract extension for coach Dick Jauron, Wilson said only:

"Did you see that fumble? It was terrible wasn't it?"

  6. Let's say those "2 of 3" wins you're talking about come over the Jets and the Broncos. Is the 8-8 team this year then an "improvement" over the 9-7 team last year? Hell no! We would have a 1-5 record against the AFC East. I don't care who "else" you beat, to improve you have to get the AFC East record improved, otherwise we are falling back instead of making progress where it counts.

Outside of our dismal play in the East, this season would still be more disappointing. Last year had a poor start but increasing wins as the season progressed which at least made it somewhat encouraging. With this years amazing start and massive mid season swoon, even a couple late wins will not be enough to make it seem better than last year. Expectations got much higher early in the year, and were more painfully thrashed!

  7. What's sickening to me is that here we are again. Running over the same old ground. Wade Phillips, Gregg Johnson, Mike Malarkey, Dick Jauron, ...fill in the blank. Hire. Follow with 2 to 3 years of "rebuilding", gotta give them a chance, there are some bright spots, etc., then after dismal failure, fire. Rinse, repeat. History of the Bills since Levy.

    Wow, this is fun...

  8. only NOW it's official?

It's official when you get SWEPT by the f'ng Dolphins, a team that was supposedly as low as a team can get at the end of last season. It totally sucks getting beat twice by them. I feel as low as I can ever recall in my 32 years of being a Bills fan - and that's saying something. I think I'd feel better if we were 0-13. From 5-1 to THIS? Sickening dissapointment does not begin to describe it.

  9. What's wrong w Schottenheimer? I mean, he had the Chargers at 14-2 and got fired (for not winning in the playoffs). I don't know about you guys but at this point, if we had a HC that took our team to the playoffs a few years in a row, that would be one hell of an improvement.

I only WISH we could be bemoaning our inability to win deep into the playoffs, instead of our ability to win period. I think the "Marty can't win in the playoffs" thing could be overcome. And wouldn't that be cool, for Marty and the Bills to get the "can't win the big one" monkey off their backs together. Laugh all you want but some tough, ball control Marty ball might be just the ticket.

  10. This farce of a season has a lot of people thinking that way.

It's pretty darn easy to envision 6-10, w the games we have coming up. From 5-1 to 6-10, let's see that'll make our record over the last 10 weeks of the season 1-9. Friggin shameful - right up there with the worst Bills teams in history. So much for building a contender, instead we're nosediving big time.

  11. Kornhole started by saying it's a different feeling from being in Buffalo the week before. Then, after the long touchdown, says well that woke the crowd up. Just now coming back from commercial, they say, sure is quiet.

We always seem to lose a heartbreaker on MNF, but you guys that attend... represent!! Thanks to everyone that attends and shows the nation how its done.

I wholeheartedly agree! Hats off to the crowd noise - our fans are crazy loud and proud. When we lose after that kind of great display ('Boys last year, Browns this), it always makes me more bummed because I feel for all those fans who gave it all they could, more than any team I've witnessed - and end up on the short end. I REALLY want to win those games - the fans deserve it so much!

  12. He's a young QB...This kinda stuff is going to happen....

Mularkey !@#$ed up JP's development by not allowing him to go thru these kind of games early in his career....You cant do that to Edwards now....Let him go thru his up and downs now....once he regains his confidence...We will se more games like SD, then what we saw tonight...

I do think he cost us the game tonight (6 points off turnovers, plus without them we might have scored on a couple of those possessions to boot). Still, I agree that he needs to push through this and gain his confidence back. He is intelligent and has a hell of an arm. I think he can shake this off and as time goes on we'll see more of the good, less of the bad. I don't want to screw him up, start over w someone else etc. He's the guy.

  13. Ok, you have a QB that struggled all night, and you are driving deep. Now, conventional wisdom is to not take the risk and shatter his confidence. Now, I am not the biggest Jauron fan. But I am going to stand by his decision. Think about it, no matter how the Bills lost tonite Jauron was going to take a good deal of the heat. By losing this way, it is at least better than Edwards getting picked for the 20th time of the nite.

As for the jackasses that are talking about the team moving: !@#$ Off!!! If you can't stick by the team, through thick or thin, go cheer for the Pets*, Dolfelons, Clots.

Lets look forward to the Chefs game and hope for the team to get healthier.

    -justn

Better to lose in conservative fashion and telegraph your lack of confidence in your QB's ability to perform. Yeah, that's probably got everybody's confidence much higher now. So high I think they'll probably drop a couple more games in a row as the media scrutiny and finger pointing reach enjoyable levels... Stupid...

  14. We should have blown them out of the water tonight! If only Edwards had his head on straight, he had all the time in the world and just looked afraid to throw most anything but the dump off pass to Lynch. Thus, the Browns KNEW we had to run, and even so they could not stop us. If we had just had an actual passing game too, we would have mopped these guys up. How sad that whenever other parts of our game start to click, a wheel comes off another one.

Before the game ended I was thinking even if we win, do we REALLY deserve to be thinking playoffs? I mean seriously, it was the Browns for godsake.

  15. Anyone else just feel crushed?

crushed, pissed, disgusted, so much like the feeling in the night game w the Cowboys last year. So many times they take you to the brink, thinking you'll (fill in the blank ... win the game, get in the playoffs, finally have a solid offense and defense all year, win the superbowl, make the needed stop) and then WHAM you get f'in suckerpunched in the gut big time.

Sad thing is, I'll be back next week. Please sir, may I have another
