Which is why, if a big-bodied WR or, preferably, a stud TE became available, I'd make that move NOW. Allen is right on the cusp - but you can tell that he's chasing a bit, in part because he feels he needs to win games himself, in part because he doesn't have someone he can rely on to get open on every single play. (Side note, Beasley, who is the closest thing to a security blanket, was double- and triple-covered on third downs yesterday.) The tight ends on the roster have taken turns dropping critical passes all season, including Knox whom I love but who looks to be a year away from being a consistent contributor. Go get him a Kyle Rudolph type and watch him relax a bit, then you'll see growth.

If the Bills keep playing this well, I'd expect Daboll's name to come up in their HC search this offseason - Belichick coaching tree, has worked with raw rookie QBs, and is the type of candidate that the Skins can actually get, i.e., he's not a big name and may be desperate enough to take that job.

So not to get too technical but you're highlighting an issue involving college scouting of offense, which remains a concern under Beane. Their pro personnel side has been much better, especially over the last year or so. For whatever reason they have a tough time evaluating college prospects on offense, although if they end up hitting on Allen (arrow pointing up) it will weigh significantly and perhaps definitively in the "plus" column, obviously.

The Pats were the ones who drafted him and if memory serves me right, they had tried to stash him on their PS but the Bills snatched him up.

Andy Benoit's take Daboll, a former tight ends coach, has a strong working knowledge of this sort of passing game, and the Bills this season have indeed shown some creativity with dropbacks out of base personnel (including spreading out into empty formations, which is another way to clarify the coverage for the QB). It’s a fine line to walk, though. Buffalo’s offense ultimately hinges on the success of its ground game; incomplete passes on first down can quickly derail a ground game. And Allen, gifted a fastball thrower as he is, does not deliver with stable accuracy. Like Cam Newton, he is liable to simply miss on a half-dozen throws each game. This cannot be coached out of a guy, it can only be coached around.
