The Maddening Mystery of McDermott's Disappearing Defense

Ten years in and you’re still quoting the entire OP for a one-sentence reply. -
Why did Gregg Williams fail as a Head Coach?
Coach Tuesday replied to JetsFan20's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really? His defenses are nothing special to me. Lots of chaos and guys out of position. They bully bad offenses and young quarterbacks and that’s about it. -
He’s also a walking opportunity cost. Dawson Knox the Idea is far better than Dawson Knox the Player. They need to be looking for some competition there at the very least because they’re investing a lot of time into a raw player with concussion issues and a knack for supreme boneheadedness. Odds are relatively low that the light bulb goes on for him. It might, but I wouldn’t put all my eggs in that basketcase. I will add: other teams just go get real right ends. Some franchises are like 3-4 deep with quality at the position. The Ravens and Eagles have tight ends like shark’s teeth, they just keep coming. The Bills haven’t had a real one in like five decades. They don’t draft them and they don’t sign them. They try to convert quarterbacks and guys like Knox who had six catches or whatever in college. WILL YOU PLEASE JUST GO GET A REAL NFL TIGHT END IN MY LIFETIME? Cripes. I will keep going: I have followed the Bills since the mid-80s and every year as long as I can remember, I've thought to myself, "Maybe next year they'll get a real tight end." But they never have! Tight end is somehow never on the shopping list. All the tight ends they bring in were checkout line throw-ins, or in Knox's case from the "As Seen on TV" aisle, but when you get it home and open the box it does like one cool thing and then falls apart because it's a Chinese-made piece of junk. That's enough for now. But I have MORE to say. UGH.

Same guy. -
I’m at the edge of my X’s and O’s here, I’m just a casual fan with no experience coaching or playing, but it seems to me the issue is in the blocking techniques - Daboll prefers misdirection and disguise and I suspect he has the linemen start out running plays with a pass blocking technique so as not to clue the defense that it’s a running play. I could be wrong about this but the linemen look reactive and upright on a lot of our running plays, almost as if they’re pass blocking. Would make sense to have running and passing plays look the same for as long as possible to confuse the defense but that seems to me to be the source of the problem. If that makes sense. Also Zack Moss is terrible.

He’s really good at his job.

Total lack of football instincts.

Quinton Spain released; signs with Bengals PS

Agree. Ford is trending toward being out of the league in a couple of years. He needs to worry about his business. -
Please dress Yeldon

I’m thinking something “Fall Chic,” casual yet sophisticated, perhaps mix in some auburn and burnt orange hues. Plaids have come back in style, maybe a plaid wool scarf. Always thought he’d look good in a bowler hat too. -
Yannick also doesn't tackle running backs - he just refuses to do it.

Justin Zimmer signed to active roster

Lost opportunity to use "McWilliams"... -
Wouldn’t be surprised to see them make another splash move as well, for a receiver or tight end. Julio Jones or Evan Engram. Ravens’ FO plays chess.

He has looked slower, heavier-footed and totally off-balance this season. I get that he won some offseason ironman competition but I’m just reporting what my eyes told me, which is that he came into the season not physically prepared to play at a high level. Which by the way is his MO after getting paid. Which probably means they shouldn’t have paid him. -
What is Wrong With the Defense
Coach Tuesday replied to billsfan61184's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There was a running play on Monday night that looked like it was schemed specifically by Reid with the expectation that Hughes would immediately vacate the edge and crash inside. Which he did, immediately at the snap, and the back ran right into the void for a huge gain. I wonder if it’s obvious on film that if if you block a certain way, Jerry will freelance because he can’t resist. PS - my wife is tired of me yelling at the TV, “Get back in your *#+$ lane Jerry!” She has no idea what it means other than she probably made a mistake in marrying me. -

For sure that was going on. Their statement before the Titans game was odd - that Spain was inactive due to a foot injury they had “just learned of” or something to that effect. That was the first salvo in all of this. -

Still it’s stupid. Someone said upthread “McBeane has zero tolerance for attitude issues.” You know what I’d prefer? Zero tolerance for losing. Manage the attitudes and hurt feelings, it’s your job. Cutting players who complain is insecure and shortsighted. -

Oh I realize it’s not a salary thing - but the draconian approach is the same. Why cut a depth player in an injury-riddled season? We know how this will end... -

Shades of Langston Walker. Why not keep him for depth? In the Ralph days they’d cut high-paid players who fell out of the starting lineup in order to save cash, sacrificing depth in the process. And then they’d proceed to suffer a rash of injuries at the position, always, like clockwork. -

Showed up out of shape and never really seemed bought in this year. -

Here was Daboll’s play calling during the critical 3Q possession, down 20-10: 2 Yard Run (1:18) Z.Moss right tackle to BUF 27 for 2 yards (D.Wilson). 1st & 10 at BUF 25 7 Yard Pass (:43) (Shotgun) J.Allen pass short right to T.Kroft to BUF 34 for 7 yards (C.Ward). 2nd & 8 at BUF 27 Run for No Gain (15:00) Z.Moss up the middle to BUF 34 for no gain (A.Hitchens, D.Wilson). 3rd & 1 at BUF 34 I would add that the first down run was out of I-formation. Needing to get his offense on track in the second half, and after a halftime break to make “adjustments,” Brian “the Brain” Daboll thought it would be a good idea to run out of a formation that the Bills don’t do well in, handing to a rookie who has shown a complete inability to make plays. The next play was a short completion to a slow-footed tight end, followed by another inept handoff to “Skates” Moss (who sucks, by the way). Brian Daboll is bad at his job. -

Josh shoulder injury affecting his play?
Coach Tuesday replied to DBilz2500's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This. His offseason work focused on bringing his LEFT arm in tight during the throw (“taking a bite out of the hamburger” or whatever Cover1 was calling it). He can’t do that as well, or without causing pain, and it’s throwing his mechanics totally out of whack. That’s my theory, at least. The ball seems to be sailing a lot more than it was pre-injury. -
On to the Jets. Screw that. On to the Patriots.
Coach Tuesday replied to Beast's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah? Just a factual one. Best QB prospect in over 20 years. A win ties them with Jax, Atlanta, Houston.
