  1. I had a feeling you'd get a few groans. No worries. The "you don't draft a RT!!!!" faction is as strong as the "you can always find them in the later rounds" faction. (though they never do.). I'll throw out another name I'd be considering at RT. Darnell Wright of Tenn. He didn't give up a sack this season, in SEC competition. He worked hard on his footwork before last season, and it showed. He shut down Will Anderson of Bama, who is largely considered the best edge rusher in the draft. To borrow from the Magnificent Seven (the original): VIllager 1: There's a guy we are looking for...look at the scars on his face. Villager 2: The man we want is the guy who gave him his scars. Yul Brynner: You learn fast. There is 0 things wrong with taking a quality RT at 27. I liked the Spencer Brown draft pick, I still don't have a problem with it. But a back injury needing some type of medical procedure at that early age...yeah it makes me nervous. It wasn't just missing training camp last year, as Beane likes to say. Damn, he was starting by about the 4th game last year, his rookie year. And he looked better in 2021 than in 2022. Something didn't look right with him last year. And with a bad back, I don't have a great deal of hope for improvement...not for a guy colliding with 300 lb. repeatedly. Taking Jones from Ohio State...damned..idk. He looked really, really dominating in his Senior bowl practice until he got hurt...I just have Mike Williams flashbacks.
  2. Just throwin' it out there. Don't be shocked if they take Jack Campbell of Iowa at 27, or possibly in the 2nd. He's won every award a defensive player can win in the college ranks. He does everything well, great instincts, smart and 6'4" 245 lbs. The big question everyone had was his athleticism. He got the "he's too slow" label and I think people think he was going to run a 5.0 40. He didn't. He ran a 4.64 at the Combine. In other drills there, he was in the top 3 to top 5. Took the top spot in the 3 cone and short shuttle drills. He answered doubts about his athleticism. if its run D, it improves with him.
  3. Well now that they are all back together, there is a choir of angels right now, all screaming Free Bird, with a bunch of chick angels sitting onthe shoulders of the male angels.
  4. Sometimes you have to balance these stories with a lil good news: https://nypost.com/2023/03/07/minnesota-viking-kj-osborn-saves-man-from-burning-car-in-texas/
  5. That's a possibility. If you're looking to go in that direction, Cedric Tillman of Tenn. needs to be considered. He was hurt early last season, needed ankle surgery, but still came back before the season ended. Over 1000 yards in 2021 with great games against Bama and Georgia in 2021. 6'3" 215 lbs. with great hands and excellent in contested catches. Get it near him, he'll catch it.
  6. IDK. Using the Cinci example, the very next week, Burrow was sacked 5 times and harassed far more. His rating was 70 for that game and they scored about 7 points less than they averaged. Buffalo proved you could win a playoff game with their Oline, but we are not looking to win a playoff game any longer. To me at least, the bottom of the first/top of the second is a sweet spot for finding a quality OL. We'd probably have our choice of the best two interior OL in Torrence or Schmitt (Schmidt?). Either would start day 1, improve our OL and protect our greatest asset/playmaker. In terms of OT's, there will probably be 3 taken off the board before we pick. Wright from Tenn would improve the RT position immediately, assuming there is no improvement from Spencer Brown or Doyle. Id actually prefer a trade down to the middle of the 2nd and pick up an extra pick. To me at least, there is going to be a better chance of getting a WR or S in rounds 3-5 than there will be on the OL, especially at OT. Although I admit, I would be tempted on Hiatt at WR, warts and all.
  7. I understand about the weight concern, as I would have with anyone that large. I probably have the same concern about someone like Dewand Jones (Sp?). I have Mike Williams flashbacks. As far as "what we want to do scheme wise"...I don't get it. First, what the Bills want to do scheme wise is pass the ball. That isn't changing as long a Josh is behind center. And rule no. 1 of passing the ball is keeping your golden armed QB upright and the pocket clean. It is priority 1 and all other concerns are secondary, very secondary. Second, he's an outstanding run blocker who can move people, either at the first or second level. He's just not a guy that you might not want pulling outside on a regular basis. This is the job of the OC/running game coordinator/OL coach. Its up to them to incorporate his strengths as a run blocker...which are outstanding, into the run game. with a little creativity and a little work, he's someone your RB's would want to run behind. You don't have to redo your entire scheme, just some tweaks. And based on his ability as a drive blocker, the tweaks will pay dividends. There are enough zone blocking plays that he can handle. Personally, the worst they can do is pass on a premier pass protector because your OC/running game coordinator/OL coach says, "there are one or 2 blocks in our 'scheme' that he can't make". And then wait until the 3d round and take some guy who will struggle in pass pro, but can get outside on a pull for a running play. And unfortunately, that is a scenario I can envision. Pass pro is, and will be consideration 1, and everything else is secondary to that.
  8. you can tell he loved what he did. And he's probably the person most responsible for popularizing cajun cuisine in the 80's. He explains things so simply. As far as Gumbo file goes, i have it in the house, but I don't make gumbo, because you have to make a roux and I suck at it. And I suck at it because I end up getting distracted. And it burns. And you have to throw it out and start again. The ingredient list is pretty much the same though, gumbo is more of a stew served over rice. Jambalaya, the rice is cooked in.
  9. I nun who taught me in elementary school was the inspiration for The Penguin in the Blues Brothers. I'm sure of it. But then, I imagine most who went to catholic schools say the same thing.
  10. I like Jack Campbell but like protecting Josh more. It depends on where he goes and who we've taken. I'll throw another name out there that hasn't been mentioned, (I don't think). Daiyan Henley Washington St. Quick, agile, strong, great instincts. Voted the best LB in Senior Bowl practices this year. 6'1" 230lbs.
  11. Learn Jambalaya from the master: It not that hard, definitely full of flavor and great on a cold night, despite being a Louisiana dish. Use your own Franks to adjust the heat to you liking, which any Bills fan should have on hand. Tip - It calls for Andouille sausage (eh, the ham is optional). Don't bother with Johnsonville...it has no flavor. Look around. You don't need much. Polish sausage can be substituted, but its not the same. Rice cries out to be made into Jamablaya as its growing.
  12. a number of SB's will be remembered by one play.. Wide Right, obviously; One Yard Short/The Tackle in the Rams/Titans game The pass call by Pete Carroll against the Pats; The David Tyree catch This game will forever be remembered as The Bogus Call. And that's a shame.
  13. Yes he does. Not that there isn't enough blame to go around, From Frasier, to McD, to Beane for having only one speed rusher on the edge (Von), to the 1st and 2nd round draft picks on the DL who haven't shown up for the playoffs. For McD, he should know better. While he is self evaluating this offseason, he really needs to go back and watch the film of the defense his mentor put out. It was around 1994 or 1995 when I was with the Colts, and we were playing against San Francisco with Steve Young running the West Coast offense, releasing receivers all the time, guys getting by you. The idea was don't let these people dictate to you. You have to put more pressure (on the quarterback), and every year we tried to figure out how to do that, ~Jim Johnson https://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/news/eagle-eye-jim-johnson-was-an-innovator-who-changed-the-nfl
  14. No, but you could look for a trade partner who is willing to sign him long term. The trading partner could either eat the 10 mill cap hit or structure it somehow into a new deal. You have to find a team that believes he's been used wrong since 2019.
  15. Possibly, but its Feb, there are still a ton of things that can happen between now and April. He was there on the sim...so I took him. There are probably a number of people in my mock who won't be there when I chose them. Brooks at 205 for instance. The PFN staff doesn't create team's big boards.
  16. Actually, he looked pretty good as an IOL in the Senior Bowl practices, which is competition against the best Seniors the SEC, ACC and Big 10 had to offer. Of the interior linemen I saw, Torrence and Schmidt were the best. Mauch might have been down a notch, but not by much. Probably on the level of Avila from TCU, though they are different types of blockers. He was a fighter, as was advertised ad nauseum, but it was more than that. He moved his feet well, kept his man in front of him and wasn't backed up very often. The hair and the toothless grin had the publicity, but that isn't what makes him good. Id take him over... the center from Michigan..or Steen from Alabama, for instance.
  17. 27. Broderick Jones T - Georgia. He was there, he was taken. He might lack experience and has some things to clean up but he'll figure it out. Outstanding prospect. 59. Jack Campbell- LB Iowa. Won just about every award possible. Won just about every award possible this year. Butkus, Nagurski, Unanimous, Consensus All America. More than just a run stopper, decent enough in coverage. Opposing QB rating when targeted of around 70 this year. Unless he bombs at the Combine, which is unlikely, he's a fit. He might not have the top end speed of Edmunds, but he will be in the right place in run and pass defense. Edmunds re-signing money, if any, is better spent elsewhere. 91. RIcky Stromberg- C Arkansas. Steady, well rounded and extremely well coached. Had a good Shrine Bowl Week, won the SEC's Jacobs Blocking Award in2022. DIdn't give up at sack this year, with only 7 pressures. 130 Jammie Robinson - S FLorida State. He keeps coming up around this position in the draft. Hits, covers, tackles, makes plays. 139. Jayden Reed - WR Michigan St. voted best practice player among WR's in the Senior Bowl, as voted by the DBs. Production fell off this year with injuries and ...Michigan State's offense, after a 1000 yard year in 2021. He looked healthy during Senior Bowl week and was regularly beating DBs. Fast and good cutting ability. 205 Karl Brooks -DT Bowling Green. He put up incredible numbers at Bowling Green, including 20 sacks and an incredible 96 pressures in the past 2 years. Had a very good Senior Bowl week, he was probably beating his man off the ball more than any interior DL. **potential UDFA. Caleb Murphy -Edge, Ferris State. Yeah, he'll be drafted...but what the hell. 25 sacks last year, 40 in the past 2 years. an incredible 39 TFLs in one year alone. First time DII winner of the Ted Hendricks award.
  18. Im just going ot mention this with a smile. Seems appropriate, considering the Eagles are in the SB and many consider them the most comeplete roster in the league. It was written in November of 2020 by some Philly "beat writer". Does it sound familiar? 1. In 2013, the Eagles drafted Lane Johnson and Zach Ertz. Since then, Howie Roseman’s drafts have landed the Eagles exactly one Pro Bowl player, and that’s Carson Wentz. The only defensive player Roseman has ever drafted who’s made a Pro Bowl is Fletcher Cox, the 12th pick in the 2012 draft. One defensive Pro Bowler in nine drafts (not counting this year). He’s never found a defensive Pro Bowler after the 12th pick overall. Wentz is also the only Pro Bowler Roseman has drafted who’ll be in his 20s on opening day next year. It’s not just J.J. Arcega-Whiteside instead of D.J. Metcalf. This has been happening for years. Scrounging up functional starters from the late rounds or the practice squad or the waiver wire is fine. But you need stars to win big. Studs. Elite players. And Howie’s failure to deliver star power to this roster has made it virtually impossible for the Eagles to compete on a regular basis with the NFL’s best teams. Maybe Miles Sanders or Dallas Goedert becomes a full-fledged star, but right now there isn’t a single elite player in his 20s on this roster, and that’s a damning indictment of Roseman’s draft record. Every GM has misses. Every GM has big misses. But you can’t afford to have the big misses without the big hits. Doug Pederson has been awful. Wentz has been terrible. But when you look at the Eagles’ decline, it all starts in the GM’s office. https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/eagles/howie-rosemans-shocking-draft-record-and-more-roobs-random-observations
  19. Of course you realize... This statement: "you don't draft Cody Ford just because "we need a tackle" Is usually said by teams that say: "you pick the best available player at a premium position in round 1.........and try to do the same in round 2." The teams that live by the adage.."You can find them in the later rounds" Are the ones that rarely do. A team like Philly or Baltimore, who sometimes do find an OL in the later rounds, does so because they put the priority on that part of the team. They aren't afraid to use a first or a second if they think the quality is there. And, they are infinitely better at evaluating who is going to be quality vs. who is not. I tend to agree, I think a team that doesn't have the importance of the OL is the team that says..."He's 6'5" and 315", OK, let's draft him. we need somebody. Well, every OL in the draft is 6'5" and 315 lbs. The results show. In 5 years, the Beane regime found 1 mid-late round pick (below the 2nd round) who was worth it. And they cut him. Its something with this franchise on that area of team building. You have to go back to Jason Peters to find a mid to late round OL pick who is worth something..(1/2 credit for Brad Butler, years ago). OL improvement through the draft is crucial this year. But as crucial, if not more, is finding the talent evaluators who can recognize quality. If I'm Beane I realize that this area of evaluation isn't my strong suit and I hire an OL guru for the upcoming draft. If allowed, I'd hire a guy like Arkansas Head Coach and OL Guru Sam Pittman to review tape and meet with prospects. But then, he's probably too busy doing his own recruiting. But you get the idea. In a final ironic note...the past 2 years I've watched this defense composed of 1st and 2nd round difference makers fail to show for their final game. I remember sitting in Arrowhead a little over a year ago, waiting for one of them to make a play. A sack a pressure a tipped pass a forced fumble. Anything. But it never came. It was worse this year, as I watched a DL comprised of mostly first and 2nd round picks get blown up in the run game and fail to get any pressure on Burrow, who was sitting comfortably behind a B level Oline.
  20. Blues Brothers 2000. Terrible movie but good music. And a very eclectic mix. And, sorry, I like the blues. BB King doing his standard How Blue Can You Get.. Matt Murphy with Blues don't Bother Me Dave Moore of Sam and Dave using that incredible voice of his on a gospel standard John the Revelator, with a great gravelly intro by Taj Mahal.. Blues Traveler doing a peppy version of Maybe I'm Wrong with a great harmonica solo Dr. John being Dr. John And a king sized cast of over the hill people doing New Orleans.
  21. mmhmm. Do I listen to the philosophy of 2 people who have 9 SB victories between them, 10 if you count the 1989 season... or yours? Tough call.
  22. He might be awful now, since he's about 92, but he wasn't in their Super Bowl years. Richard Seymour Matt Light Vince Wilfork Deion Branch Ty Warren Ben Watson Logan Mankins to name a few.
  23. This is where you go back to Bill Walsh's Rule no. 1 for drafting...how does he help our team? Walsh was notorious for cutting off scouts who said things like "he's not a good pick in the 1st round, but he'd be great in the 2nd". He'd just say, after the draft, he won't be judged on where he was drafted, but how he plays. I don't think they even graded players by round, they used a 1-10 scale. I bring this up because you seem pretty lukewarm on Rice and say the reviews are all over the place on Vorhees. At the same time, I think you said Schmidt from Minnesota is the best IOL in the draft. Reading between the lines, it seems you like Schmidt but don't want to take him in the 1st, even at 27? (and I'm just using this as an example.) If...you think Rice helps more than Schmidt would, that's fine, so be it. But if you pass on a player you like, because "that's too high for him, or for the position:" and take someone you are lukewarm on...and the player you liked is gone by your next pick...I don't get it.
  24. Yeah, I thought he looked good this week, absent getting beat badly once by Will MxcDonald in practice. MCDonald is a guy I wouldn't mind nabbing if he makes it to say..the 3rd round. Bergeron of Syracuse also looked pretty solid, I thought. I can't say I was very impressed with the outside pass rushers though. Maybe that's good for us..Maybe they won't waste a 1st or 2nd on an edge rusher.
  25. Yeah, he's not going to be there at the end of the 2nd round. He had a very, very good week at practice. He and Torrance were by far heads and shoulders of the rest of the pack. Torrance will be gone in the first. Small school darling Cody Mauch also had a good week and today he's played guard, center and right tackle. Steve Avila from TCU held up better than I expected. He was a consensus first team all American at LG, but sometimes ..idk...you wonder how they do against that type of competition. He more than held his own. Dawand Jones had about as dominant a day at RT as you could have on the first day. I'm sure there were people running over from watching other positions to watch his reps. But then he got concussed and had to sit out the rest of the week.
