Cable TV Versus Everything Else
CookieG replied to Formerly Allan in MD's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Uverse!!!!! For just $130 per month, our Uverse 300 package provides a wide range of infomercials and other paid programming! And when they cancelled the NFLN 2 weeks before the draft was just a smart move on their part. Seriously, those type of shows probably cover half of their channels now. Idk, we have a Roku TV, its OK, but there are probably a ton of apps I haven't added. Netflix is cheap. My oldest keeps telling us to get Youtube TV. Its $49 per month and looks like it has a decent channel selection. In terms of real channels, it probably provides as many as we're getting now. -
We're building the offense around the passing attack
CookieG replied to VW82's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't have any doubt they looked at pass protection first when signing players. Morse, Spain and Ford are all very good pass protectors. Spain was actually a pretty good run blocker when he started and Russ Grimm was the Titans OL coach. But Grimm retired and they went to a zone blocking scheme. He's not very good at reaching for players and diving for ankles. But he CAN move people. Not surprisingly, I think the Titans OL fell off as a whole when a new OL coach came in and they decided to change the blocking scheme. Another great NFL coaching move. I've watched Morse nearly weekly for most of his career with the Chiefs. Yeah, he's a very good pass blocker, but he's not a bad run blocker. He holds his own in the middle of the field and he can pull or get out in space. Remember, people thought the Chief's run game would fall off when Kareem Hunt was kicked off the team. It really didn't. The reason was the scheme and the talent on the OL. Morse was a big part of that. Oklahoma did have a good deal of ZBS in their game plan. But if you've ever watched Cody Ford cave in the right side of their line, he can understand that he's capable of moving people. There's nothing wrong with making pass pro a priority, but it doesn't mean the run game will suffer. It really should improve this year if these guys are used correctly. -

NFL Throwback: Top 10 Draft Classes of All Time

yeah, I received the Uverse announcement the other day when I tried to turn on NFLN. It was "an effort to cut costs" by Uverse, i.e. looking for a way to pay for the $85 billion purchase of Time Warner. This was of course, after they raised rates for Uverse, again. Uverse is down to half of its channels being paid programming or shopping channels. I can't get Sunday Ticket anyway due to line of sight issues. (Our trees, neighbors trees). When this happened, I read a few articles on the issue. Some made it sound like the NFL was looking more towards streaming Sunday Ticket. That might work. IDK..its time to become a cord cutter, I think, if I can find a service that gets my wife her OWN network.

9 Quinnen Williams IDL Alabama I still wanted Dillard at OT, but Q is one of the few I’d say “too good to pass up”. There are a few in the top 10 I wouldn’t say that about. 40 Chris Lindstrom IOL Boston College – consolation prize for not getting an OT in the 1st. Top 2-3 interior OL in the draft. He slips in at RG and the OL just got better. 74 Dawson Knox TE Mississippi A bit of a risk at 3, but I can live with that. The 4.5 speed and the 18 ypc are intriguing to say the least. 112 Justice Hill RB Oklahoma State – Successor to Shady..and he gets to hang with both Shady and Gore for a year to break into the league. Some pretty good bake to go along with a lot of shake, and stronger than his size indicates. He can live at TT’s house for a year and learn how to use that chip on his shoulder. 131 Emeke Egbule LB Houston The common adjective is “explosive”. He gets to learn the finer points of the game from Lorax. 147 Ben Burr-Kirven, Washington LB An All American LB who can play the run, the pass and pursue at no. 147…I’ll take it. Especially when he runs a 4.5, broad jumps 10 feet and does a sub 7 second cone. He’s short, but no shorter than Devin White, and right now, he’s a better tackler. 158 JordanBrailfordEDGE OklahomaState 10 sacks last year and around 15 tfls. He’s got great closing speed on the QB. One scout said he was the best defensive player at the Shrine Bowl. 181 Cody Thompson, WR Toledo His 40 time was pretty slow, but every other measurable is very good. Before he was injured in his junior year, he was averaging 20 ypc for his career. He was heading towards his second 1000+ yard season his junior year when he got hurt. Of course, he had a QB throwing to him then. He could be a tackle breaker in the slot. 225 Mitch Hyatt OT Clemson 3 year starter for the national championship team, who graded out at over 90 for the national championship game. We can probably find a spot for him somewhere. 228 Tim Harris CB Really hit with the injury bug in college but a very good athlete and very good player when healthy. More than worth the risk in the 7th.

The reality of what Beane is creating with the OL.
CookieG replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have no problem in bringing in OL with attitude, in fact, I think its a good idea. They still need talent of course, because if not, you just have a mean guy who swings and misses most of the time. One of my favorite stories from the old days was when Conrad Dobler was brought in for the 1980 season. He was replacing future HOF Joe D, one of the toughest OL the Bills ever had. But what Dobler brought was attitude...it was summed up by the equipment manager of all people, while talking about jerseys and such: Bloodiest jersey – Conrad Dobler, 1980-1981“It has to be Conrad Dobler and often times it wasn’t his blood,” said Hojnowski. “Conrad told me one time because I had asked him. He said, ‘If I’m on your team I will do anything I can to keep my guy from getting to our quarterback.’ If I have to bite him, trip him, whatever.’” https://www.buffalobills.com/news/uniform-extremes-5098653 The thing was...he instilled that attitude in his fellow linemen, especially Ken Jones and Joe Devlin, the 2 talented OT. It was quite simple..."no one's getting to Fergie..we'll stop them by whatever means necessary." The Bills gave up something like 16 sacks that year and led the league in 3rd down percentage. Bring the talent, bring the attitude. -

do like the WWE used to do. Duke it out in a winner take all triple threat match. -
I don't think its asinine at all. -The Rams have had a really good DL for most of the decade, even before they got Donald. They had Long, Quinn, Brockers..then they added Donald on top of that. They were no more than a 7 win team until they got an offense, including the 3 years they had Donald before they developed an offense. -The Jets had two good DT's and then drafted Williams in 2015. And they've been...um...the Jets since then. -The Bills led the league in sacks 2 years in a row and in 2014, had over 17 sacks from the DT's. They couldn't earn a playoff spot. Hell, last year, they led the league in pass D and won a whopping 6 games. So the general question of offense over defense....it has merit. Especially when your offense was ranked 30th last year.

Draft Simulator - First-pick.com

I've used the draftnetwork mock draft simulator a few times recently. Not sure how Q Williams keeps falling to 9, but he has been in that one. I could live with that. -
Daniel Jeremiah - Jonah Williams is someone to watch
CookieG replied to Ittakestime's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
oh, its a boring pick to be sure. I mean, no one jumps up and down screaming happily when the foundation to a building is done. Well, maybe the concrete guys. But if its not done right, the rest of the building is off. It is no place to scrimp. -

9 may be a little early...but imo..so what? I think they are in a great position to transform what was one of the worst OL (and one of the worst offenses in the NFL) in the NFL into one of the better ones. Will this mean possibly overpaying a bit? Maybe, but so be it. Now, if as you say, he'll be a multiple pro bowler...its by no means a reach. If he helps solidify an OL that can again run block and ...god forbid, pass protect, he's not a reach. And getting that type of quality on a rookie contract is a bargain. This is an offense that scored 269 points last year, with around 40% of those points coming in 3 games. I really like some of the offensive additions they made, but its a great opportunity to finish the job, or at least take it to another level. They are going to have the first choice at a number of OL, or maybe second choice. It is well past time to solidify the OL across the board, rather than half a line or three fifths of a line. If that means taking someone at 9 when he's "slotted" at 15-20...pfft..I'm not going to worry too much about it. People like to scream "reach" but tbh, the bigger philosophical "reach" is to believe you can make your D so dominant that a below average to average O is all that's needed. It rarely happens that way. To me, there's a number of ways they can go here.. -Dillard at 9, move Dawkins inside to guard. You improve 2 positions with one pick. -Williams...or another at 9. If its true that Williams stated he won't play anywhere but LT, that concerns me. I might look elsewhere. -trade down for an extra pick ...hopefully an extra 2nd. You might still get your OL and still get a quality defensive player in the 2nd, pl;us a bonus pick. -get the defensive player that people are having wet dreams about, whoever that is..and hope that a guy like Lindstrom, Risner or Jenkins is there in the 2nd. Give your newly annointed franchise QB the best chance you can. Give him time in the pocket, give him back a running game. They've made a surprisingly good start in the offseason, its time to take the next step. -
I'd be more concerned if the OL from last year continued.

You say you're all for BPA, but do you mean it?
CookieG replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Even in that situation, I think there are more questions that go into the decision.. -how bad is the area of need? Is it a chronic problem or a one year thing? -how likely are to fulfill that need elsewhere? This is really where honest self evaluation takes place. Simply saying, "we can get another guy later in the draft" -ROI - In your example, if I have the top pass D in the league, how much will Player A make that better? More importantly, how much more will player A make the team as a whole better? If player B improves the deficient area substantially, but not completely..but player A only adds marginally to a strength, what's the better gain? -how confident am I that player A is really that much ahead of player B...or anyone else who is eligible at that slot? -how good am I at correcting a deficiency in areas I'm weak at, evaluation wise? Do I need to "overdraft" to make up for my own e v a l areas? I think a GM has to look at a different objective than a lot of player evaluation people. A GM MUST consider areas of deficiency, or he's not going to be a GM very long. Its easier for a scout to say..."BPA", but the GM looking at a horrible offense, or defense..has to consider how improve the weak areas of a team. And I think what B716 is saying has a lot of merit. BPA can vary greatly depending on the person assigning the BPA tag. For example...Rexy..(who's kidding who...he ran at least the first round of every draft where he was a coach). I'm quite sure, that if you got into that mind...(God, who'd want to), he probably didn't have an offensive player listed in his top 100...ever. And I'm quite sure that in his mind, every first round pick was the BPA at their slot. He got a few right, Wilkerson for example. But he was wrong more than he was right, by a wide margin. Milliner, Coples, Kyle Something, Calvin Pryor. So yeah, the person doing the evaluation does make a difference. -
Hypothetical Mock, Who would u select @ #9
CookieG replied to BillsFan1988's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe he did better against Alabama... Or Maybe not. He's going to be facing SEC quality OL and RB's every week on Sunday's. Well, better quality. As far as the comparison with Burr Kirvern, the big difference is that I'd be talking about taking him in rounds 5-7. Not at number 9. People keep talking about making sure you get this sure fire difference maker at 9. Well, after watching the games against Georgia, Bama, Auburn and Ole Miss, he's neither sure fire, nor a difference maker. Maybe he was better against teams like Louisiana Tech, idk. -

CookieG replied to BillsFan1988's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
BAA maybe, but not BPA. I understand the hype over the 40 time, but watch him against Georgia and he wasn't the best player on the field, much less the BPA at no. 9 in the draft. Lots of missed tackles, bad angles, whiffs on tackles and failure to make the plays that a LB with a 4.4 40 should be making. Yeah, he jumped on the pile a few times down the field, he got in the backfield on a blitz when he had a wide open lane, but more often, OL were overwhelming him Qb's and RB's were dodging him, etc. With his speed, he's really the type of guy you expect to be an "all over the field" player..who flies noticeably to the ball and drops the guy when he gets there. Maybe others are right, that McD can work some magic, but he's got a long way to go. If you're looking for a short but athletic LB who really is all over the field, I'd just as soon wait a few rounds and take Burr Kirven out of Washington. -

Maybin did the same thing before the Combine. Who can forget this pic? It was always suspicious that they only showed him from the waist up. If nothing else, Burns is a lot faster and more agile than Maybin was. But damn, he's skinny. -

What I always remembered...no idea why I did, but I remember Townsend calling them the Rolling Bones. And he did, as he was dedicating the next song to them (Long Live Rock). to this day, I don't know why that stuck in my head. As to the file sharing thing...pfft...its really just downloading a file. Its on a music message board, the guy provided a link, it takes you to a download button.

It sounds like it was Daltrey..but tough for me to say. For me, it was verification that it happened and wasn't just some alcohol induced foggy memory I had. I listened to some of it last night, as I remembered, they were good that day. It brought back some cool youthful memories. As I said, if you want it, I'll provide the link to the download. But unless you want to by the file sharing service, it takes forever to download the concert. about 750 mb at dial up speed. Something to start before bed and let it go on its own.
