Yeah, the Browns line with 1st round draft picks and all Pros is really lighting it up. And the pratice squad player snad late round picks and AFL players for Indy are really stinking it up? Wait....maybe it has to do more with the QB. The Bills would still stink with Peters just like last year b/c they do not have a good QB. When Fitz had time today he missed a WO Evans in the end zone and a WO Reed and missed on multiple other throws that would have kept drives going. That is when he had time. We need a QB plain and simple more than anything else on this team

Just adds more credibility to Buffalo....Jax has a possible playoff team and not only cannot sell out the stadium...they can't get 40k fans in there!!! That is pathetic. It is not like they have a 80k seat stadium and are getting 75k fans. The fans there just are not interested. Can we move on and they can go to LA and leave the Bills alone and out of the discussion. Or, send the Chargers 60 miles north to LA, move Jax to Toronto if Toronto wants a team and wants the dissolution of the CFL (and someone has the 2+billion to buy the team, pay the 600M to move the team and 1B to build a new stadium)and let the Bills stay in Buffalo.

The Colts really seem to be missing Dungy, look at all the games they have lost since Dungy left. Wait, have they even lost a game?

You would have to go back in time to actually get the whole aura around the Bills and their fans. The atmosphere was horrific and at an all time low....yes much lower than it is even now. Marv came in, Mularkey left soon afterwards and they were left without a coach. Jauron was hired, they had a 1st round QB they had to see if he could play and be a good QB in this league. In his first year, despite limited talent they go 7-7 and have a shot at a playoff spot with two weeks to play and end up losing to Tennessee at the Ralph 30-29 in a great game. That season they were immensely better than the '05 team. In 2007 they got off to a horrible start and then made a great run to get to 7-6 after a big win at Washington where it looked like Trent Edwards was really going to be something. Then they lost three games straight and Marv retired. Marv was fair at GM but really did no worse than Donahoe or Butler....remember the worst GM draft we have had was Butler's last draft and are still paying for it as well as trading a 1st round pick for RJ. I don't think Marv ever really was the one person to make a decision about personnel....does anyone think that during the draft all scouts gave their opinions as did Jauron, Modrak and then Marv said no we are not picking Ngata we are picking Whitner. I think he really wanted to coach, but I think the problem was when Ralph brought him in there was really no one person making ultimate decisions.....remember Marv was NOT called the GM. They basically came to as best a consensus they could. He did draft the Bills one Pro Bowl player out of what 3 they have had this decade in M Lynch.

I can't believe with Mauron gone they are still doing this!
Ray replied to Red's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So they should go right into the middle of a hurricane to practice? 70mph winds are hurricane strength. My point is simply why take the team out and practice where they accomplish absolutely nothing....nobody catches a pass, nobody catches anything b/c the ball is all over the place. They are actually going to try and complete a pass more than 5 yards on Sunday, so why practice in elements that do not allow you to practice more than 5% of your playbook. If they were playing in those conditions in another dday or two then you practice in it b/c that is what you are relegated to....very simple concept really. -

Ray replied to Red's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So you want them to prepare for a game in the 40's and sunny by going out in a blizzard, unable to get anything accomplished in 60+ mph gusts? Yeah, great idea. Glad you are not on the coaching staff. Makes no sense whatsoever! -
Ross Tucker piece - very critical of the Marv/Jauron regime
Ray replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really? That's what you take away form that? Wow.....practice squad players are long shots to begin with but Buffalo actually has a good record of finding decent guys to play and play well in the NFL. Peters, Pat Williams both Pro Bowl players who were on the Bills practice squad. Again, what I take from that article is that it demonstrates again that the MOST important position on the team is QB. If you have a stud QB like Carson Palmer you do not need all 1st round draft picks and All Pros on the OL (Cleveland does and how does that work out for them?). Cinci had one player returning on te OL and then has three practice suad guys come in and play for them. You can do that with a QB who is excellent but not with Trent Edwards like the Bills did. -
Hey, did anyone see ProBowler Jason Peters today?
Ray replied to The Senator's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes Peters is better than any of the other guys who have tried to play LT for the Bills thise year....the problem is the team would be in the same position. Out of the playoffs with bad line play and a bad QB. Plus, every year for the next two years you would have to deal with a disgruntled LT wondering if he was going to play. I'll take Wood and Nelson for Peters and hopefully in the next year or two a decent LT. -
When Tom Brady is your QB you automatically become a better WR. When JP Losman is your QB you automatically become a worse one....so much depends on the QB. Look at Randy Moss and look at Wes Welker....both flourished with Tom Brady.

Ray replied to The Senator's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So you wanted management to pay Clements a top maybe 25 CB 10M per year? That is not money well spent. Peters was not going play here for the 7-8M they offered him per year and was not good last year and would have held out again and not played well. He is often injured and certainly if this year is any indication will NOT play up to his contract. The biggest mistake was letting Pat Williams go and that was Donahoe....for basically not wanting to pay him...the Vikings ended up paying him a little less than 1M a year more than the Bills offer. He is still playing at a great level and this defense over the last decade could have been much better with a guy like him consistently in there. Front office made some mistakes but if you think Peters and Clements are playing anywhere near the level of their contract that just is not true. -
Go watch the games today people....I have seen the Pats linebackers get dragged 3-4 extra yards multiple times today. I guess they are terrible. It happens to ALL LBs when the RB gets a clear hole. Sorry, it happens to every team and every MLB. Poz's numbers are at the top of the league for tackles, FF. On a per game stat level he has done very well. Mark Gaughn of the Buff News says he has had a very good/great season.

Having a big DL is great but doesn't change the fact that they are on the field an extra 6-7 minutes a game b/c the offense is horrible and leads to too many 3 and outs. Having an offense that can sustain drives would help the run defense immensely. In games where we were shredded the most they held their own until the 4th quarter for the most part and then faded in the 4th quarter. Don't get me wrong, I agree that is a HUGE priority and would not be upset with a great DT taken number one but no defense with great run numbers will succeed as long as the team has no QB. Indy had the worst run defense in the league the year they won the SB, they just happen to have a great QB.
-
Agreed! I actually find college football boring overall but have been watching more closely lately especially QBs. Agree with your assessment. You hate to make a decision off of one game but Tebow and McCoy look horrible. Maybe you take them with a third round pick. Pike and Suh were impressive.
-
Agreed! The chasm is really not big. We've played our division very tough with the exception of the 1st Miami game. We can beat all three so that is encouraging. As horrible and as many deficiencies as this team has we have been in games. If we get a QB that can produce and hit open guys and limit the amount of three and outs our defense automatically gets better and our ST is better with better field position. In today's NFL you are really only a couple of players away.

Trading 1,2 and next years 1? Glad you're not the GM. The kid looks great but you neer know until they play in the NFL. If the Bills are in the top 10 then they may get him if they are not convinced on a QB. The problem is that you need a great QB to have success in this league and be a great team. If the QB of the future is there (Clausen/Locker) you take him. The reason the Bills have not made the playoffs in 10 years is because they have not had good QB play, plain and simple. If they think they can get a Pike or someone with the second pick and Suh is on the board I have no problem with them taking the guy. I agree he looks very good and you could pair him next to Stroud as well.

Our recent high draft picks have not performed
Ray replied to jahnyc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
McKelvin was really on his way to being a playmaker until injured. Poz is good value for a second round pick. I know people on this board seem to hound him incessantly but listening to people around the league they have a lot of respect for the guy and guys who know football and follow the Bills like Mark Gaughn will tell you he has had a very good year. Whitner is good but not good value at 8 and the Bills should have drafted Ngata with that pick, I think that was classic overthinking and over analyzing by everyone. The Bills needed a big DT and then pick Whitner who is a very good player but could have gotten him at 10 picks later. McCargo was a bad pick. Maybin is a project that has great ability but needs probably another two years to manifest himself as a number one pick.......not a luxury for a team with so many needs. J Byrd is great value!! I would like the Bills to not over think things. They are actually still paying for J Butler's last draft which is likely the worst in the last 12 years for the Bills. Then Donahoe and then Marv and now too early to judge the last two drafts. Marshawn was a pro bowler last season so it is tough to call him a bad player when he is judged to be one of the best in the league at his position. In sum, not nearly as bad as people make it out to be but even a couple different picks could have made a big impact (Ngata over Whitner for example). -
Evans is a great route runner and is NOT only a deep threat. He is a great receiver with excellent hands, a great team guy and a hard worker. Do you think it is any coincidence that TO's worst season comes when he has Trent Edwards and R Fitzpatrick throwing him the ball? It has everything to do with QB play. Both Evans and TO would already have about 60-70 receptions each if they had a good QB throwing them the ball. Evans is a victim of bad QB play. Watch the game from the stands and you'll see he is consistently open.....ask guys like Jim Kelly who watch game film and say he is open and plays are there to be made.
-
Trent is done. After teams have studied him they realize he will not throw into coverage and will consistently check down. He is a career back up in this league. He is not Brees and is nowhere near Brees. Brees was 11-4 his third full season for the Chargers as in '01 he played one game. Trent is the only QB to have lost to the Browns in the past 20 games. The Browns are 2-18 in their last 20 games and TE was absolutely horrendous in both those games and the major reason those games were lost. If he cannot compete against the worst team in the leage the past two years he cannot compete against the rest. Time to move on unless we keep him around as a third QB next year.
-
Agree with almost everything you say with exception of Trent and JP being viable NFL starters. If they were they would not be as terrible as they have been. But everything else I agree, especially in regards to LB play and having perspective by watching other games. I see Lynch and Jackson drag plenty of other MLBs 2,3,4,5 yards extra. It happens in the NFL! I mostly agree that the Bills need a GM more than a coach b/c you can have a serviceable coach who motivates players, uses time-outs well and challenges well and with very good players you'll do fine. It is the players that make the difference and MOST imprtant is the QB position. So you can bring in whatever coach you want but without a great QB this team will never be great. Find the GM to do that and Gabriel would defintely be a very good choice, and better yet, has Buffalo ties. This team is really not that far off with a few players. As bad as they have been this year they have been in every game in the 4th quarter with chances to win.
-
Yes, I'm sure it was all Jauron's fault for failing to see JP was qualified to be the Colts' 3rd string QB. If JP was good he would have shown it. Face it people he is not. Very nice guy, just like Trent, but not even average in terms of QB play.
-
Evans walks into the end zone on one of those that Fitz skipped to him b/c he got hit as he threw. Evans on a team with a great QB is in the Pro Bowl every year without a doubt. Evans has put up very good numbers and has had JP Losman, T Edwards and R Fitzpatrick as his QBs. I like Fitz but how were Chad OchoCinco's numbers last year? Maybe b/c Carson Palmer was out they were not so good!

How NOT to build a small market, cold weather team
Ray replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A few years ago Chicago had the best defense in the league with fast quick defenders. Chicago is one of two NFL cities where it is colder than Buffalo in the stadium. Basically they need GREAT players. Bruce Smith is the best DE of all time and was small. He played at 265 pounds. And he played in Buffalo. I just want players to be good. If they are big and good like Pat Williams and Ted Washington I am thrilled. If they are big and strong like Leif Larson I am not. We want good football players is the bottom line. -
Go watch other NFL games. Poz is likely in the 10-15 range for MLBs. People do realize that MLBs get beat all the time. Ray Lewis makes tackles 10 yards down the field. For reference Poz has missed how many games this year? He has 74 tackles 1 sack 3 forced fumbles and an INT. Ray Lewis has 92 tackles 2 sacks and 2 FF and no INTs. Poz's stats are actually better per game considering all the time he lost. He also has nowhere near the defensive line that Baltimore does in front of him. He certainly makes mistakes but so do every other MLB in the NFL. People are WAAAAAY overreacting calling him the worst? Really, people get some perspective.

OK....I have been defending Maybin and I am not ready
Ray replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The guy has great athletic ability and great attitude. He may indeed project better to an OLB as he has very good speed but give the kid time to develop. Not only is he a rookie but he is still very young. Only 21 yrs old so let him develop. Even if he gets to Schobel's size he will look better. -
Sometimes you forget how good those teams were. Thurman still looked pretty darn quick in those highlights. Great to see a Bills team that was very good. I forgot Jax was undefeated going into that game.
