This team can go 8-8 this year...if not better.
Ray replied to DarthICE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
New England's draft over the past 5 years have not been that good. They got lucky and drafted Brady and put together a very good DL. Brady makes the OL very good. How were there picks last year? We have had more productive players the past two years from our drafts than the Pats. The major talent problem with the Bills is at the QB position and other than getting McNabb which they tried to do it was not going to change in the draft. -

Who in the division outclassed the Bills last year? Nobody!! So I agree, the Bills are basically on par with the division. Sanchez hardly scares me as a QB. Trent Edwards/R Fitz had better numbers than Sanchez last year for comparison purposes. This is hardly the division of the Pats from 3 yrs ago when they were undefeated and you knew they were leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. The Pats defense is average, same with Dolphins and Dolphins offense is wild cat driven. People on this board are ridiculous making these other teams out to be the '85 Bears when the Bills beat the Jets and Dolphin last year.....actually convincingly beat the "great" dolphins team. The NFL is very close in terms of talent...the Bills are VERY close to being a playoff team but still a very good QB away from being a SB team. -
They beat multiple playoff teams last year and were very competitive with the SB Champs, so realistically not that far away at all from the playoffs. From being a SB contender they are quite far if they do not get a QB more than anything. Plain and simple, they need much better QB play than they have gotten.

Evans is a great player who has never even had a good QB throw to him. He has yet to play with a good QB and yet has very good numbers. I feel sorry for the guy. If he played with Manning he would be well on his way to a Pro Bowl career. I am glad to see the best CB in the league give Lee some respect as many on message boards (who seem to know so much more) actually say idiotic things like trade the guy.

Darth you are 100% correct and I have been making the same point for awhile now. Everybody talks about getting great OL LBs etc...but what it all boils down to is great QB play. Anyone watching playoff football could see that. The beauty is that you can do the experiment pretty easily as you just change one position and see how a team changes. You replace just one player and keep the rest the same (T Brady for D Bledsoe, Flutie for Johnson, Favre for T Jackson). The Colts take P Manning out against the Jets but keep the OL the same in week 15 and the Colts have the lead....2nd or 3rd play from scrimmage the Colts QB fumbles and Jets win in a laugher as they no longer have to respect the QB. When you have a QB you dictate what/how the defense plays you. By far the single biggest reason we have been bad for 10 years is we have no QB...plain and simple. You can muddle through and get close to .500 with an average or even below average QB b/c the league is watered down. But we will NEVER go anywhere until we get a legit QB. On Sirius and on ESPN they went down every division and to nobody's surprise the team with the worst QB finished last in every division but one (obviously AFC East was B'lo with the worst QB). If we had P Manning with the same team we would be 13-3, 14-2. A great QB makes that much difference.

You realize in his two drafts the Bills drafted two Pro Bowlers don't you? Lynch and K Williams have both been named to Pro Bowls

Really? Is this the worst post of all time?

You are right....the Canadian side as great hotels entertainment, things to do restaurants, great views. It is a great tourist attraction.....top 10 in North America...I believe top 6 overall in terms of millions of visitors. Niagara Falls NY unfortunately is a dump although they are slowly getting things done....it makes sense geographically as the So Ontario fans would feel even more connected to the team. You would still get all the Rochester fans as well and obviously he same Buffalo fans. NF is about the same distance from Buffalo as OP.

McNabb was more productive than ALL top 10 picks in the '09 draft. Tyson Jackson had a great year, so did Michael Crabtree, Matt Stafford, and DH-Bey....it is NOT just the Bills who have not had impact players in the 1st round. The draft is a complete crapshoot and there are just as many failures and busts as Pro Bowlers. Probably most 1st rounders end up being decent NFL players but certainly NOT great players. That being said if you trade for McNabb I think you have to make it conditional to protect yourself. Give a third round and a player with conditions that if he does make the Pro Bowl it becomes a 2nd and if he takes you to the SB it becomes a 1st. I do not think any team will outright trade a 1st for him just b/c of his age. But with conditions you do protect yourself.

Neither Kelsay or Schobel fit a 3-4 scheme at this time in their careers. That leaves a lot of holes to fill. They did say they would run a hybrid system 3-4/4-3....whatever that means. That is the problem with bringing in "a system." Trying to have players fit your system is always the worst way to coach. Maybe they will play out of a 4-3 system the first year or two and transition to a 3-4 eventually. Who knows.....but it seemed everyone here was so enamored with the 3-4 even though we have no players to play it particularly well and it adds another few areas of need to a team that already has a handful.

Kota is 100% correct...take away that drop by Garson and he takes it to the house or at least for a big gain and the game is 17-3 in the 2nd quarter and every dynamic of the game changes. That is NOT coaching that is players not making plays. The balll hits a WR in the chest and he should catch it....it is that simple. The Colts were NOT outcoached. They did not make plays when they were there.

Terrence McGee Probowler M Lynch Pro Bowler K Williams P Bowler Trade for M Stroud a Pro Bowler last year L McKelvin number one in AFC in kick return yards as a rookie. J Byrd Defensive and ROTL finalist and leads the league in Ints You can play that game with every team....the Bills actually do not lack a lot of talent at many positions what they lack the most by far is a QB over the past decade and that has stunted all growth more than anything. Over the past decade we have wasted three number one picks for QBx in RJ, Bledsoe and Losman and all have failed....that is the biggest problem.
-
Agree a lot with Dr Fung.......they do not have personnel to run the 3-4 at this time. They will end up spending a lot of picks and FA acquisitions on changing a defense. They are using a scheme they like and trying to make the personnel fit it. Defense was NOT the problem this year, in fact they kept this horrific offense in every game until the 4th quarter. You could really upgrade the defense we had with one playmaking LB and that would be it. Now we need to find 3-4 playmakers to fit the 3-4 scheme and end up concentrating heavily on BOTH offense and defense.
-
Great....that means we have yet another coach who plans to make his favorite scheme fit the personnel rather than the other way around. Basically means K Williams is expendable as is Kelsay and probably Schobel who at 32 yrs old has to play a position he has never played before. Trading or obtaining a huge NT in FA would be imperative if we do make the switch. As stated before there is not another team in the NFL who is less prepared personnel wise to make the switch to a 3-4. People here seem to be obscessed with the 3-4 when we have nowhere near the personnel to run it. You could not pick a worse sceme for this personnel unless they have absoolutely defined their goals in terms of who they want in FA or will trade for. But when you do NOT have the most important part of the 3-4 on your roster that makes it VERY difficult. They may want V Wilfork but their is no guarantee. Maybe we could have Ron Edwards just like KC....how did that work out for them?

JK can NOT stand Vick on multiple levels. He lied to him coming out of the draft...he was going to have JK's brother be his agent. Vick came to Buffalo to watch tape with Jimbo learn nuances of the pro game and QB position. He committed and to Kelly Enterprises and then went back on his word and signed with another agent. Then, Jimbo is disgusted by everything else the guy has done in terms of his thuggish behavior.....so gee, can't imagine why he wouldn't want him as the QB of the Bills. Plus, Vick does not like cold weather. So someone else can GLADLY take him

Buffalo would be the best place in the world to live if you could leave Jan 1st thru April 1st. Buffalo is great, but I think 99% of the people in Buffalo would gladly spend Jan thru March in South Florida

The Bills will still be the team of Southern Ontario. A Toronto team will ave exorbinant prices (if...a big one they got the Rams). They would price out all normal Canadian fans who would still supply 0-20% of the Bills crowd b/c they love hte Bills, have a history of going to the games and it is still very affordable and a great experience. The only thing the Bills would lose out on would be gbig Canaian (Tornto) businesses buying suites at the Ralph, and they do not already. So basically everything stays the same and solidifies the Bills here.
-
Agree with a lot of your assessment. People are correct that Buffalo is a "small" market yet is bigger than both New Orleans and Green Bay and that within 60 miles of Buffalo (diameter wise) is well over 5M people so it is not like the area is devoid of population. The area is actually situated quite nicely to a lot of wealth just over the border and not even including Toronto itself. Rochester/Buffaol/NF/to just south of Toronto is an area of millions of people. There are people to fill the stadium, buy jerseys, buy merchandise and keep this team here. It does the league no good for reputation to get rid of a longstanding team with such history to make another 10-20M a year when you consider all debt service it would take to move. When all is said and done, the Bills stay

Buffett owns the Buffalo News and Geico which has a strong presence in B'lo.

The close to $1B fee to move the team applies to the fee a team would have to pay to move an existing team to say Toronto.....so for those scared of the Bills moving to Toronoto do the math....$800M (Rams are going for 7-800M), at least $1B in downtonwn Toronto to build a stadium they want and then 600-800M for the relocation fee if it was the Bills. That makes it impossible to turn a profit when you are talking about $3B roughly to buy a team and move it to Toronto....the best thing for the Bills was TO not getting the Olympics so they would not have a stadium. You have to remember the exchange rate but that is negligible now it may go back down again. The Bills ARE staying in Buffalo people, they are not moving. Another person nobody has brought up is Howard Milstein who went to school in upstate NY at Cornell and owns 100 acres+ n Niagara Falls and it is J Kelly's former agent who is the point man there for him for the NF property.......he and father on that list at $3.8B. Also, Milstein tried to buy the Redskins about 10 years ago so we know he is interested in the NFL!

Gailey "tainted" by Dallas firing after 2 seasons?
Ray replied to jcblanco22's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is interesting that they were 6-10 before Gailey got there and then 5-11 for three years after he left. They went to the playoffs both years he was there and that leads me to believe he is actually a good coach. -
Really? You are comparing the NFL with the UFL or whatever 4 team league that was.....come on. JP was not bad due to coaching/lack of coaching etc....he was bad b/c he could not make quick enough decisions, throw accurately and recognize defenses coverages quick enough. He just wasn't good enough. The same with all of our other QBs for the past decade. Edwards looked like he was finally going to be the guy but he obviously is not. It is NOT because he is the victim of bad coaching etc....when he has time he has failed to throw accurately, or throw well (pick 6 against Miami/Clevelan game/three complete ridiculous throws to TO against TN/49ers game last yr/etc...). He is also injury prone. Great guy, I just think he is a career back up QB. Fitz is a back up QB as well. Brohm is an unknown but probably a career back up as well.

Does Ralph Owe Buffalo a Succession Plan?
Ray replied to wisebill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He does not "owe" Buffalo a plan but I am sure he has one. The guy's legacy, his joy in life and what he lives for is essentially all revolved around the Bills. He does/would not want the team and city and people to be left without a team. I think he will probably leave it to his wife as it then has no estate tax. She can then do with it what she wants.....do think he really wants the team to leave right after he passes away. His wife if very involved in Buffalo charities and the community and s a very nice woman and I highly doubt she would just pack it in and sell it to whoever in LA/Toronto etc... Maybe Ralph has a plan and does not want his relatives harassed and targeted by people who know they will inherit a 900M asset. Do you really think his attorneys and accountants would not help him with this? -
Well.....they beat both the Jets and Miami this year and everyone seems to say we are the worst team in the world so we are certainly not very far from both those teams. We also should have been (I know) 1-1 vs the Pats. We are very competitive within the division. Keep in mind when Chan was with the Cowboys they were 8-0 in the division.

Would a move to a 3-4 be as tough as first thought?
Ray replied to sven233's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why is everyone so enamored with the 3-4....if you have personnel to play it you play it. If you have personnel for a 4-3 you play it. Most people have no clue what they are talking about it and if sounds fashoinable so they talk about it. You do realize those in a 3-4 play cover 2 all the time don't you? You also realize the Bills played cover 2 only about a third of all snaps?
