Similar words were spoken about '08's #3, DE Chris Ellis. We just have to wait and see...hope he hits the field better/quicker than Ellis. The BUF club hasn't had much of a sharp eye when it came to drafting DLs in recent years. An aside - The current staff was pretty dumb IMO, in announcing to the other 31 clubs that they would commit to a 3-4 before the draft. Same thing with the publicized "scatback" desire. Reminds me of the previous crowd that chirped about the "no-huddle" offense. The draft is in a way, like playing poker. Which I am miserable at - but I do know that keeping your cards close...matters.

LAMP - Got my 'Buffalo, Home of the Braves' book
stuckincincy replied to stevewin's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Nice story - I was there, too. I have a Braves souvenir - an ashtray with the orange Braves logo given to me by a godchild. Do you remember that idiot Domino sugar promo, with some low-paid sap dressed in a light brown bear suit tossing sugar cubes into the crowd - and the crowd pelting them back? Or Neaverth announcing in the Aud and saying that that's two for McGianalli after Snyder/Brown sold off the of Bob McAdoo and other players? Snyder - then John Y. Brown. Grrr. I feel that cosmic justice was served when Brown married Phyllis George. Danny Neaverth, for the younger crowd here: He was a big Bflo. noise, when AM radio was king: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Neaverth -

NY to raise tobacco tax's
stuckincincy replied to Jim in Anchorage's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Yes - the former Price-Waterhouse outfit did a study in 1989 (good luck finding it), that concluded that the best thing for a non-smoker was to offer up a light... And still, the "cost to society" screed continues apace. -

Cig tax is the 3rd largest revenue stream for Ohio. They will wring their hands all day long about the dangers - but make them illegal for the greater good? A couple of months ago, Hamilton County floated an idea of a county tax on cigs to insure the continued good fortune of the protected, elite class - our government workers. State legislator Bill Seitz responded immediately, saying that the tax dough is our swag and we have laws in place to stop you from grabbing our gold. It's inexorable... -

Technical Recruiters - Worthwhile or Worthless?
stuckincincy replied to SDS's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Generally - worthless IMO. Jobs are got by connections. We these days call it networking; the old (and correct) term is cronyism. Best of luck to you if you aren't an old native of the area. "An ounce of pull is worth a pound of push." -

What also dried up were the folks that would stroll into the bars hawking this or that bunch of (possibly hot) material goods - electronics, books, games, tableware - you name it. But I've not been in a bar since OH put in their smoking ban (OH, like NY, puts out phony figures that "prove" that the bar and eatery business didn't go down. They do like to point out that overall booze, wine, and beer sales are up. Yep - bad economy so people yuck it up at home - duh!). -
Who wins the battle at the #2 WR position?

CIN has stocked on wrs. They'll carry six. FWIW, I expect Matt Jones and bust #2 '08 pick Jerome Simpson, Maurice Purify (he's nuts) and Freddie Brown to get axed. The Simpson pick was a jaw-dropper locally, right up there with rb Chris Perry in '04 and rb Kenny Irons in '07 - huge hands, can leap to the moon, but evidently can't run routes. BUF might want to take a look-see. http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Ten-...29-0b465b932501 -

I grew up with root vegetables as the main part of the diet. Excellent nutrition. As you may recall, a while back I mentioned salsify. Often went out to school with rutabaga and peanut butter sandwiches. You cut 1/4" slices from the large end, then boil those until tender. Then, you fried them quick on a hot cast iron skillet to a surface crispness only, using whatever grease was in the can (nobody dumped grease - bacon, meat drippings, cut-off fat - all was saved for future usage). Let them cool, then slather on the pb and wrap 'em with wax paper. We got a lot of our food from the farm that the general family owned and worked. When the State and eminent domain took it away, there were still the hucksters roaming the streets. Long gone. Same as the fellows who used to hawk produce in the bars. Many were the times that I bought, but my guess is that the government(s) went after them because they couldn't grab taxes, and not being "USDA or FDA" compliant. What a shame. -

Nice work. But with that, why was he let into the FA market? I understand roster crunches and the $ considerations, and that decent player get tossed out because of that. I don't buy into these sites that grade and rank players for this or that. So many variables during a season. -
Miss Me, But Let Me Go When I come to the end of the road, And the sun is set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long, And not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that once we shared, Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must make, And each must do it alone, It's all a part of the Master's plan, A step on the road to home. So when you are lonely and sad at heart, Go to the friends we know, Bury your sorrows in doing your deeds, Miss me, but let me go. -anon. Success To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. - anon., often attributed to Emerson. The Searcher I looked for my soul But my soul I could not see, I looked for my God But my God eluded me, I looked for a friend, And then I found all three. - Thomas Blake

Who wins the battle at the #2 WR position?

With the current NFL rules, and teams using 3 wideouts with some consistency, I'm not sure that #1, #2 #3 have all that much meaning. Common usage would have the Pats'* Welker as #2 and Moss as #1. I don't see that - I'd dub Welker as #1 if I had to name one. Same with CIN when they had Housh and Chad Johnson. To me, a "#1" receiver is the one that you toss to that has the skills, hands and moves to be the best bet for a completion. And it can be a running back - Larry Centers and his 80 receptions in 2001, for example. -

That's a nice memory to have. Back-in-the-day, now and then a kid would show up with a jug to be filled with draft beer for home consumption. You are right about different times. Kids hanging in bars was less common than today, I think. Now, in the local places, you can occasionally witness America's prevalent family unit - a single mother with whatever children she was awarded custody of and getting taxpayer $ for support of same. Some are well-mannered - some are not. -
God rest her soul in peace.

Roger Goodell 'It's clear' NFL no longer needs
stuckincincy replied to BillsFan-4-Ever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It certainly would put an end to numerous "benchmarks" we talk about. Crowing about a 1,000 yard rusher would be crowing about a chap that gains 56 yards/game average, less than today's paltry 63 rush yard average. Same for everything else on offense and defense. -

A bit of a "silver lining": With their switch to a 3-4, the offense will get camp time playing against same. In addition to the AFC East opponents, they square off against the AFC North and the NFC North. IIRC, they will be playing 11 or more games vs. a 3-4 defense.
