  1. I am nowhere near the expert on this as is freak from KFFL, but I remember something about 100m times containing 10-yard splits, the first four of which were used (largely) as the basis for the 40 time extrapolation. I have it in my head that the combine utilizes electronic clock stoppage (triggered by the runner hitting a string), but that starts are still hand timed. Pro days are even more informal, as I believe everything is hand-timed. I'm not sure of this, but I think it's the case. Don't get me wrong - come draft time, I live and die with each 40 time the media reports. But it is quite interesting to explore the validity of it all, and see that these times that are so oft-cited stand upon the flimsiest of foundations.
  2. I got the Lewis numbers from here. (Whole thread here.) Unfortunately, the database has deleted most of the older posts where he gets into the nitty-gritty of it all, so the only remaining posts are the one where he refers to older (since-deleted) posts and concepts. I'm not a math guy, so I didn't retain a whole lot of what he posted (raw numbers and calculations as they were), but they were still fun to read. A very interesting area of study, certainly.
  3. Probably not. There's a poster on my Pats board who extensively studies the nature of 40 times, and has asserted that Carl Lewis' then-record 9.92 100m time projects to a 4.49 40. In short, the hypothesis is that the NFL's 40 times are complete and total BS. But it's only a theory. It's always interested me, though.
  4. I'm not sure, but I know he scored a 10 on his uniform number.
  5. What's that strategy called? "Losing ballgames 3.9 yards at a time?"
  6. Right, I think the Pats were just throwing a bunch a stuff at the wall with regards to WR, and Chad Jackson was the one that stuck. As I said though, depth is a concern. If it becomes a big enough concern for the Pats' brass, they might give an '07 pick for Lelie, provided he's still available.
  7. Not really defending Lelie here, but there are lots of good NFL receivers who haven't made the Pro Bowl. I know that New England was talking to Denver about Lelie before the draft, but I assumed that that all went out the window with the trade up for Chad Jackson. I still wouldn't mind Lelie, though, since there are still a lot of question marks behind Branch on the WR depth chart.
  8. I think I'm still recovering from 10 consecutive hours of Berman. That can be a pretty traumatic thing.
  9. Maybe they could hire guys who report sports news instead of wannabe comedians who bludgeon us over the head with their schtick.
  10. Let me rephrase. My problem is with nicknames based on puns and pop culture references.
  11. My problem lies more with the concept of nicknames.
  12. I thought it was pretty groan-inducing. I immediately felt embarrassed for Berman and his family. He had shamed them and himself.
  13. I was referencing Bill Brasky.
  14. I saw him run a 3.37 once. Then he ate the Bible while water-skiing.
  15. Thanks. I've been too busy to listen to all of Belichick's post-draft press conferences, so I thought he'd revealed something about their draft board without me knowing. I wouldn't be surprised if Whitner was on Belichick's radar, though. He seems like a solid guy, and Belichick loves versatility in his defensive backfield.
  16. The Pats wanted Whitner? I hadn't heard. Source?
  17. Well, we drafted one. That seems about right, given that Fauria signed with the Redskins. Mills will be a FB/H-back type in the NFL.
  18. What? Only 10! The last three smell like camp fodder, anyway.
  19. Cowboys drafted Pat McQuistan. A brother, I assume.
  20. Under Armour commercial. CLICK! CLACK!
  21. Well, I didn't want to infer too much.
  22. Every time the Bills' picks get brought up, Mort trashes the new front office, presumably because he's ESPN's chief Donahoe knob-slobberer. This time around, Mort claimed that the Bills "clearly don't understand draft value," or something to that effect, and brought Levy and Wilson's age into it. He's just being vindictive because Wilson got sick of losing with his boy TD.
  23. Great way of putting it.
  24. Today was rounds 1-3, tomorrow is 4-7.
  25. I thought the Maroney pick was okay, but after getting Jackson in the 2nd, I'm ecstatic. Pretty nice day one haul so far. To Bills fans, don't get down on obscure guys like that DT you picked at the end of the 1st. A lot of times, they turn out to be every bit as good as the big name players.
