Maybe too much attention to the Bills?
ChasBB replied to Offside Number 76's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I love how Lindy Ruff gets a contract extension after starting the season 2-0. Someone needs to remind the owner that two games do not make a season. -
I've seen a posting or two alluding to differences of opinion on draft day between Donahoe and Modrak. Does anyone have any specifics on this?

At this point, why not lose 'em all?
ChasBB replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, and can we count on Donahoe to find another Mike Williams-caliber player with our high pick?! I've had enough of Donahoe. It's not 100% his fault, but we need a change at the GM position for sure. -
Missing The Point....Today Was a Good Thing
ChasBB replied to RochBillsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agree. Ralph Wilson sends guys like Bill Polian and Lou Saban packing because they have strong and sometimes even abrasive personalities. However, they were winners! Sometimes, I wonder if winning is really that important to Mr. Wilson. I used to think winning a Super Bowl was important to him, but I don't think so any longer. -
Just got home from my 6+ hour drive from Dolphin Stadium. That was right up there with watching Buffalo blow a 28-0 halftime lead at home against Bert Jones and the Baltimore Colts back in the late 70's. Very simply, Buffalo is a team that does not believe in itself -- even when things are going well, they assume it must be a fluke and that the wheels will eventually fall off and they are correct. There's just no excitement in this group. They are literally just going through the motions. On the bright side, Mularkey finally won a coach's challenge!! Was that like the 1st one in about 40 tries?! After Losman's interception deep in the red zone, I had the feeling that they weren't going to put up any more points and the offense didn't. Why not run? If they don't score, then take the field goal -- at least come away with some points. At the very least, throw the damn ball away if it's not there. All-in-all, Losman looked good. The two turnovers were bad, but he threw well for the most part and moved around pretty well. Our defense just plain sucks. They play decent for a while and then just enter into some type of funk that they can't get themselves out of. Couldn't believe how wide open the strong side of the field was. While they were not screen passes, it reminded me of how Buffalo could not stop Baltimore's screen passes in the game I mentioned earlier. Suddenly, the inept Dolphins seemed to be able to move the ball at will. That's because of a lack of will by the Bills. They just don't want it. Why that is is anyone's guess, but this team has no fire left if it ever had any to begin with. It's time to go to a youth movement.

It might be okay to let Sam be Sam, but how will that wash with the other players on defense? Won't they (eventually) follow his lead? If they see him giving the coaches crap, won't that result the other players eventually disrespecting the coach and staff? Maybe they already do. This is a tough stage for this football team. The coaches are on the hot seat, the GM is on the hot seat. Many players are on the hot seat. Just a lot of tension in this organization. How old is Sam Adams now? I think it's safe to say that he's old enough that he's not going to change. This isn't just some bad habit that a young player drops when disciplined by a high school or college coach. This is an established behavior pattern and it won't change. As great as Sam CAN be, this is still a team sport. I don't have a problem with Mularkey being hard-nosed with Sam Adams. The team doesn't need head cases like this. It just undermines everyone else's efforts in the organization. If Adams is so great, I'd like to see him turn it up several notches for ALL of the remaining games and help earn this team a playoff spot. If Adams can't/won't put in a better effort, then it's time to deactivate him and move on.

There's a thing called "momentum" -- look it up in the dictionary. Reed's drop caused the Bills to lose it. When the defense watches the offense struggle, it has a demoralizing effect and vice-versa. When players step up, things happen. Reed didn't step up. No, he wasn't the sole problem obviously. The O-line, aging defense, unimaginative game-planning, etc. all play a role, but Reed continutes to disappoint time and again. It's time to cut him loose and move on.

If I'm Mike Mularkey, I bench anyone ...
ChasBB replied to ChasBB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, but he also proceeded to belittle the Raiders defense. This is just Public Relations 101. You build your opponent up all week in the press by saying how great they are and how tough they are going to be to play against. With a little luck, the opponents start believing this crap. Then, on Sunday, you completely dismantle the them. This is how Belichick deals with opponents -- he builds them up all week long and then systematically destroys them on game day (well, not so much this season, but you get the idea). -

who proclaims self-greatness. Enough is enough. It's up to the coach to reign in this type of behavior. Yes, I know that you can probably put a big, fat 'L' in the Win-Loss column while your star players ride the pine, but something has to be done. It should have been done weeks ago with the defense and definitely last week with the RB. It's the coach's job to control this stuff and to stand up to this nonsense.

In their prime - who was/is the better back?
ChasBB replied to Kipers Hair's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
After Willis wears out his welcome with his big fat mouth and lands on some other team -- THEN he will be in his prime. He's got a lot of maturing to do. -
I don't have any problem with QB ripping his line. Jim Kelly used to do it during his first couple of seasons with Buffalo until the o-line figured out that Kelly really wanted to win games for a change. The critism is justified, but blame is not limited to the o-line. The greatest defense on earth couldn't stop an average running back today. The greatest RB on earth couldn't do much today. Imagine that -- having the greatest defense on earth and the greatest RB on earth and we still can't win. Now, why is that exactly?

EVERY Sunday is a day to worry. No team in the NFL can be taken lightly -- "any given Sunday ..."

Anyone know where the Bills are staying
ChasBB replied to Dawgg's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They're going to setup a temporary tent city next to the best burger joint in the city. -
Did anybody else see O.J. at the game?

I saw Elvis sitting on the 50-yd line! -
Happy for the win -- take them any way they come. However, I see the coach's red flag challenge continues to be a problem. What are we -- like 0 for 40 in challenges since the rule change?!!! Seriously, why can't they get it right? They've surely got people up in the booth with access to replays -- couldn't they see it was a catch and fumble out-of-bounds and not an incomplete pass?
-
I hated to see the Dolphins in the game so late, but it sure was nice to see a break go Buffalo's way for a change. The fumble that withstood instant replay was a big break. That could have gone either way. How many times have those types of breaks gone the wrong way?! Despite the lack of killer instinct, this game still goes in the "Win" column and that is a good thing indeed. Moulds made a couple of nice clutch plays including the TD. For a team that everyone has given up on I can live with an ugly win. I'll take an ugly win over a loss any day.

I'll admit getting caught up in the "McNally Magic" -- McNally will make a star out of average talent. Clearly, this is not the case. On a similar note, I guess I also believed that Sam Wyche could make an NFL starter out of JP Losman in no time. Clearly, this is also not the case. Why TD stood relatively pat with the offensive line is indeed a mystery. Everyone knows that it all starts at the line. I'm also pissed with McGahee. He hasn't earned the right to have an attitude. With an incentive-filled contract, I would think that there would be more effort from him. Then again, the line has been horrid, so it's difficult to place too much blame. All-in-all, this team is just a huge disappointment in nearly every aspect. I, for one, would not be sorry to see TD sent packing. In the age of free agency, there is no longer such a thing as a "5-year plan" -- a 2 or 3 year plan, maybe, but nothing more. I've been a fan of this team since about 1969 and don't have much more patience for this team. Look at what Nick Saban is doing in Miami with supposedly less talent! I like Mularkey, but Tom Clements is clearly not going to succeed as an offensive coordinator.

May as well just write off the year as a training year. Holcomb is not the long term answer for sure. Losman may not even be the long term answer, but let him play this year and see what happens. Of course, by the time he develops into a superb quarterback, our aging defense will be retired and we'll still only be good on one side of the ball. What else is new? Where the hell is the defense? Gray is being outsmarted.
-
Yes, you hit it dead on. Do you ever hear the Patriots saying how great they are? I never hear that kind of talk from them. The defense is very, very good, but they still don't know how to dominate for an entire game. Any offensive player talking about greatness just needs to shut up - period.

Jax ropes off seats to avoid blackouts?
ChasBB replied to BillnutinHouston's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If they rope off seats, then I hope it's for the entire season regardless of how popular any one individual game is. That's only fair. And what about Al Davis trying to get seats eliminated in the Coliseum when he was in LA -- the NFL didn't want to hear about it then. What makes Jax special? -
I especially agree with the part about MM not pulling out the Drew Bledsoe Bag of Sorry Quotes and Clichés. Several players in all aspects of the game didn't fulfil expectations and he called them on it -- looks like good leadership skills to me!
-
Would everyone frickin relax! Two games have been played. A team's true character isn't even evident until midseason. I give credit that MM is not going to sit around and wait for the offense to gel somewhere around game 9 or 10. He just wants results now. He has no more interest in defending the o-line than he does any other position including RB. I think the message to McGahee -- and really the entire team -- is to BE great before TALKING greatness. I think everyone on the team needed to be taken down a peg and MM did it right away before it got out of hand. I like MM. I really think he has his pulse on this squad. Relax and enjoy the game Sunday!

If blaming 1 player for the safety, it would be...
ChasBB replied to Fake-Fat Sunny's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What the point in deriding McGahee? So, he's not perfect -- he's got some maturing to do. As I recall, we signed him to run anyhow. You can't take one play and lay the whole game on it. Lots of things didn't go well. McGahee will learn from his mistakes and so will the others. This team is still developing its confidence. They need to be less timid on offense and not let the opponent dictate what they do on offense. -
Mularkey Needs More of a Poker Face ...
ChasBB replied to ChasBB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with you. Like I said, this particular example is a poor one to make my case on. My point is simply don't bother sharing ANY real football strategy as a general rule-of-thumb. Or, better yet, give 'em misinformation. Might make for boring articles in the news, but if being mum results in just 1 more win the entire season, then it might make all the difference. Just don't like to hear the HC discussing strategy & techniques in public -- that's all.
