I went last thursday and thought it was great. And I don't like musicals.... The set was really cool, the story was decent. The Glinda character was kind of annoying, but I thought all the characters were pretty dynamic and kept the show interesting. I'd say its worth going.

Judge rules against Seneca Nation on Buffalo casino
agilen replied to taterhill's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I was against the casino before they started building it....I said "wait and see what happens in Niagara Falls for 10 years." But now....they've already started building the thing. There is a grand plan for a new downtown when the casino, HSBC and Bass Pro are all in a row. Since it has already begun, I say let it happen. Now its just another ugly dump site. -
Indeed will get you the most results. Craigslist can have decent listings too, but be careful because sometimes it just recruiters trying to harvest your resume. If you know what industry and area you are looking in, I'd try to find what companies are interesting to you. Then check out their career sites, and apply directly. To find these companies, check out local business publications (like Business First), newspapers, and trade associations. To find my current job, I went through all the companies in the directory here: http://www.infotechniagara.org/membership/directory.php and checked out their career pages. Its a lot of work, but a lot of employers don't post jobs to sites like Monster.

Thats been a law here for years now.... Don't worry, the cops will forget about it soon enough. People talk on cell phones in NYS all the time....i think you'd only get a ticket for it if you were pulled over for something else.

They said most of the ones closing are "near other locations".... I'm guessing they are just going on that web site devoted to showing pictures of starbucks across the street from other starbucks, and getting rid of them. BTW people...Dunkin Donuts coffee sucks. And it doesn't have anything to do with quality of beans, or roasting or anything....they make it in those glass carafes that are exposed to air, and leave it on the burner to cook forever before you manage to get the last drop. I don't know how people can't taste the difference between oxidized coffee and fresh coffee. If its not in a vacuum pot, you had better get it right after brewing or its going to taste like....nasty DD coffee. I'm currently enjoying a fresh (from the vacuum pot) Spot coffee, and I won't miss Starbucks at all.

4 is way too young to be thinking of putting him down, so don't worry what these other guys say Anyway....I would get a 2nd opinion. You'd probably do it if it were your knee.... My family had a dog who was about that age and had knee problems. He had surgery (and had to be crated) twice before they actually did a biopsy and realized it was a cancer endemic to his breed. They thought about amputation, but it was too late by then, and he didn't make it much past 5. It most likely is just an orthopedic problem, but I would learn as much as you can about knee problems in your breed and what they might be caused by, and seek out a vet who knows your breed well. Also, while hip displasia might be a concern, a lot of dogs live with it. Feed him treats with Glucosamine every day (we like Zuke's Hip Action) and take your vet's advice on how much exercise he should get.

"Wipeout" and "I Survived a Japanese Gameshow"
agilen replied to stevestojan's topic in Off the Wall Archives
So, we don't have a TV in our apartment, but last night my downstairs neighbors asked us to hang out in their place so they could go out to dinner (they have a 1.5 year old). I thought, cool, we could watch TV like other people do on a tuesday night.... We came across the japanese game show...it was on for 10 minutes and there was absolutely nothing to do with a game show. There were a couple of people learning to drive a rickshaw, and a _lot_ of stupid reality TV interviews with the "contestants". Eventually we just had to watch reruns of law & order. Please people, do yourselves a favor, get rid of your TV...I promise you won't miss it. I wanted to claw my eyes out after seeing how horrible that show was....I don't even think the networks try anymore, they just say "is it a reality show? here is $1 billion! Go make it!" Support your local bar for sporting events, and read a book or listen to the radio. -
I think he meant that the quarterback had 413 attempts, and 32 of them were completions for 20+ yards. I was as confused as you when I read this...I'd like to see what percentage of 20+ yard attempts were completions.

Eh, it doesn't sound like they did anything special. They physically broke into the school, and probably just found a teacher's password on a post-it note. These dudes were pulling C's and D's in high school AP courses....probably not the kind of kids that M$ and the like are going to hire.

Which is the correct order of operations?

I'd be really, really careful before filing a claim. Once there is a claim, its not going away, and will probably affect your rates. They may not go up, but if you were entitled to drop down a level on your next renewal, now you've got a claim and you won't drop down. I had an accident a few years ago where I wasn't at fault. But I didn't get the insurance of the other guy right away (had to wait for the police report, because the guy was blaming me and the cop told me not to talk to him.) So, I called my insurance company right away, but eventually everything was fixed by the other guy's insurance. So, there was a claim on my record for $0.00. So a few months ago, I moved back to Buffalo and was trying to get insurance. Geico quoted me a very low rate, so I went through all the steps, put my credit card in and hit "buy". Then their site comes back and says "oh yeah, sorry, your rate is 30% higher". I called them to find out what gives, as this struck me as a bait-and-switch showing me one rate then charging me another. They say its because I had a claim....nothing to do with fault or amount, just the presence of one claim was enough to make the rate jump. They then refused to delete the personal information I had given them, which really put me off so they won't be getting my business any time soon (not that they really care). Anyway, a claim _will_ affect your rates...they may not go up, but they may also not go down. If you want to change companies it could have an effect. But, if you have damage in the thousands of dollars (like you probably do)....even if you pay $200 more per year for the next 5 years, you will benefit from filing a claim and getting your car fixed.

I think because the only person who has been telling you there is a shortage is George Bush. I haven't heard anything about a shortage...most of the reasons I've heard are a weak dollar and lots of money flowing into commodities markets because its not performing in stocks.

NBA Officials Fixing Games - Do You Believe It?
agilen replied to Steely Dan's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Its also the only sport of the big 4 that does not have full-time, professional referees. One holding call is 10 yards, which can effectively kill a drive....and holding can be called on most any play. A few well-timed holding flags would easily drop a few TDs from an otherwise productive offense. Hockey is too hard to fix because even if penalties are called unfairly, the favored team needs to execute on their powerplay. There is not really anything else the refs have influence over. Baseball could have fishy balls and strikes called, but I think for the most part you don't see a bias for one team or the other. I didn't know racecars had referees. So, that leaves football and basketball...while I think a ref probably could fix a basketball game, I think its do-able in football too (and worth a lot more $$). -
What type of cell phone does your teenager have?

Man, you are a dinosaur. I haven't had a land line in years....and thats why I "need" a cell phone. -
What type of cell phone does your teenager have?
agilen replied to tmk-nj's topic in Off the Wall Archives
So are you saying you just "want" a telephone? I mean sure, I probably could live without one....if I lived on an off-the-grid farm in Idaho and removed myself from modern society. For the rest of us, almost everything from getting a driver's license to getting a job requires a phone number. I'm willing to bet that you do have a telephone. I don't "want" one, I "need" one, and you do too. -

I just bought the env2 last night for $108, plus there is a $50 rebate. I'm no teenager, but I do write a few text messages now and then, and check email on my phone. I like it so far, and couldn't really see spending $200 unless its for a new iphone. -
How long is the warranty on the refurb? The balance of your original warranty or another year?

Wasn't that great? Isn't a cult classic? How old are you? PCU is second only to Animal House in the college-comedy genre. How can you think throwing meat on a vegetarian protest isn't funny?

I thought this was pretty common knowledge.... Back when I was in high school (not all that long ago, late 90's), we used to go there all the time for lunch. Their parking lot was full of expensive cars, they were the "delivery vehicles". It always felt like a perfectly safe place to park and go eat, even though the neighborhood had seen better days. I went back there for the first time since then this past Sunday night, and it seems to have gone downhill. The food was still great and the inside hasn't changed, but the shady characters have really taken over.....the place is being enveloped in the west-side blight around it. I just grabbed my food for pickup, but I think I'll be ordering delivery from now on.

Another spring... another impending lay off...
agilen replied to SDS's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I wouldn't really put too much stock in what people say on Dice or any other large job site....remember, the people there are all looking for jobs too, the ones who have jobs probably don't spend much time posting. The problem with IT jobs is there are a ton of people trying to get them, but there is an absolutely enormous gap between people who have real talent and those who fill their resumes with all the right buzzwords. If somebody says "i've been looking for 4 years and been on 84 interviews, and I still don't have a job!"....its because they don't have the skills they think they have. I interview programmers on almost a daily basis, and I'd have a hard time believing that in any other industry there is such a large difference between qualified and unqualified people. So, I think if you have real skills and real soft-skills, there will never be a shortage of work in IT. That should go double if you have clearance, because they can't outsource those jobs to other countries. The real key is getting your resume through the HR-android filter (which those people on Dice have probably mastered)...once you talk to a real technical person, you'll be in good shape if you know what you are doing. -
125 places to have a beer before you die....
agilen replied to Phlegm Alley's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Are you sure about that? A friend of mine's mom always talks about hanging out there in her younger years, and how they didn't have a women's bathroom. Maybe that was how they "disallowed" women.... Anyway, the first time I went there, this big group was sitting at the table next to us, eating and getting pretty toasted. Then, all of a sudden, the giant wooden table went flying (mostly on us), and these two dudes were brawling. Now, I'm sure thats not unusual at most bars, but at McSorley's, the dude who won the fight got to stay, and the one who lost got booted. -

I can't listen to the clip at work, but is he the guy who says crap like "Can't fry a chicken any hotter than that?" instead of saying "He scores!"? I never got that guy....its like he was trying to steal the thunder from the goal with a doofy saying. Now, Rick says things about the players who score, but at least you absolutely know when the Sabres score a goal listening to Rick. I think the pitt guy is a pretty good announcer otherwise, I could just do without his completely nonsensical remarks when they score. -
A while back when I lived in CT, I had a set of snow tires for a car that I sold. The tires were still in great shape, and they were mounted on steel wheels. So I was trying to sell them for a long time, a few people were interested but they didn't fit on their cars. Now, demand for snow tires in southwestern CT isn't particularly high...people just tend to crash when it snows Anyway, I was asking for like $100 obo (original retail with the wheels was like $500), and had essentially no interest. So, I finally had to just get rid of these things, so I threw the ad on the Free section of Craigslist. I had between 20 and 30 emails in less than 5 minutes, and the flood continued for days (even when I removed the ad). The person who came first to get the tires was exactly the kind of person who would have shown up at this poor dude's house and taken everything...he was saying "you sure you don't have anything else to give away?" Something really clicks in people's minds when they see "free", they think they have to have whatever this item is.
