One thing you guys fail to realize, THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE TRIAL BY FIRE APPROACH to develop a QB!!! In fact, you can hurt a QB and ruin him by playing him when he's not even remotely ready to play. Take a look at all the highly touted QBs that never became anything, this isn't only because of lack of ability. JP can learn on the bench, just as Marc Bulger, Chad Pennington, Tom Brady, Matt Hasselbeck, and many other QBs did - and start playing at a very high level. JP is nowhere near ready to play QB in the NFL, and as such he should be on the sidelines.

I've been saying this all year, if you don't have the speed to 'take it to the house', you are not, and never will be 'the best in the league'. He's not fast enough to ever be the dominant RB he thinks he is.
-
McGahee is a 'barely above average' running back, who talks like he's the best of all time. This is all posturing on his part for the new deal he wants, where he will price himself totally out of Buffalo and to a sunshine team (something he's always wanted). Then, all the Willis worshipers here will jump on the other side and mention how mediocre he is. If he had 1/2 the dedication and loyalty that Travis had for the Bills he's be a much better back for us.

The GREATEST Defense Ever and Best RB
bbills17 replied to phypon's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How do you give a guy 25-30 touches when he is missing holes, showing no burst, and gaining NOTHING? Geez guys, you can't keep handing him the ball when he accomplishes nothing, we gave it to him 19 times! -
There we go, make excuses for 'the best back in the NFL again'. Why does nobody ever call this guy out, he stunk it up, and had a couple cutbacks for big gains that were totally missed. Holcomb and the rest of the offence played very well considering there was no running game from Willis at all.

In their prime - who was/is the better back?
bbills17 replied to Kipers Hair's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You are completely nuts!!! Willis can't carry Thurman's helmut (or jockstrap). He's done nothing in the NFL but talk trash that he hasn't backed up. If his running was as good as his 'mind' as he says, he would be fine. -
I agree with everything but Willis. You want to run him more than 19 times?! He couldn't do anything today, just after he proclaimed himself 'the best back in the NFL'. Willis should shut up, he was as bad as the defence today.

I'm usually not one to love the flashy guy
bbills17 replied to Corp000085's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well, he was downright horrible in one game, and just average in a couple others. He has not been great, and he was the dummy who said he was better than LT. And FYI, our line was been quite good run blocking this year, there have been some nice holes opened, some that RBs like LT would have taken to the house. -

Willis should shut up, he is not even in the same realm as Ladanian. More posturing for a new deal, that's all it is. He has been good, not even close to great this year. -
The comparison to LT and Alexander is because people are comparing him to them after this week's game! The previous discussion was about young backs, and I would still take Kevin Jones, Julius Jones, and even Stephen Jackson before Willis anyday. My point is, Willis is overrated here, and seems to be the guy that gets heaped with praise no matter what he does. Our line has opened some very nice holes in the run game this year, yet they're always the first unit to be criticized while Willis can do no wrong. He is not near as good as posters on this board like to think.
-
Willis isn't in the same realm as those two RBs, but everyone here will tell you otherwise! Willis has decent stats, running behind a good run blocking group. He will never be worth the money that these guys make.
-
There were (and still are) fans on this board that wanted to sacrifice the season with JP so he could 'learn'.
-
Give our line some credit, they are a very good run-blocking group.

At what point do we HAVE to play JP?
bbills17 replied to nick in* england's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You talk as if JP is finished if he can't learn on the job. He can learn on the bench like many other QBs. We can find out what we have when he's ready to play decent football, it's painfully obvious he's not at that point now. -
Well I know that doesn't jive with the love-in for Willis that goes on here, but he is not in the class of guys like Ladanian or Alexander, and I doubt he ever will be because he doesn't have the speed to do it.
-
Someone mentioned they thought JP would have won these last 2 games as the starter as well. I disagree. JP looked ok against a bad Texans team, and he looked horrible against the Bucs, Falcons, and Saints. I'll bet Holcomb could have helped us win at least one of those 3 losses.
-
You may want to remember JP's only decent game was against (quite possibly) the worst team in football. The Texans are really bad.
-
Not at all, but great backs have amazing games when they get good line play (see Alexander or Tomlinson), Willis doesn't. He has flat out stunk when he hasn't got holes to run through. As I said, watch the great backs and they always seem to make something out of nothing all on their own, Willis just takes what he's given, and sometimes, he does it well. I don't think Willis McGahee will ever be a 'great' NFL RB.
-
I stand by that, I do not think Willis is a great NFL back, he's been both bad, and good at times this year. He played well today, but that doesn't make him a great back, the Oline opened up very nice holes for him all day and had push nearly every down. Every starting RB in the NFL will run well when their Oline dominates like ours did today.
-
You don't get the point, the point is hopeless people like you wanted to give up on the season after 4 weeks, just throw in the towel. That is f'ing ridiculous whether we make the playoffs or not. Why do they even play the games if you just want to give up and let us lose with JP the rest of the way?
-
That's a bad attitude and I am glad I never played ball with anyone with an attitude like that. Even when our backs were against the wall he had hope. The Bills are early in the season and in first place, there's absolutely no reason NOT to be optimistic. I guess I'm the same way as a fan as a player, you always have to believe.
-
And we would have likely lost both with JP in there. We are in playoff contention, wake up. I'll bet you have never played a down of football in your life, because teammates would never put up with attitude like this. That is precisely why Moulds, Evans, etc spoke up about the change, they want to win.
-
That's not the point, the point is we are fully in contention, so this was the right move. I said it once, and I'll say it again, there is NO need to play JP even if he stinks up the joint so we can 'learn' the game. Many very good QBs have learned the game from the bench. This team should play the guy that gives us the best chance to win, and that is not JP right now.
-
I think all the so-called 'experts' on this board and all the people who read their posts and just follow their lead with their heads in the sand need to get a grip and realize Donahoe and his staff are in their positions for a reason, and know a heckuva lot more about football than you do! The constant bashing of our O-line. They played a great game on passing and rushing downs! Everything looks a lot better when you get a QB in there that can make some plays! Everyone wanting to give up on the season 2 weeks ago and let JP start for the rest of the season. We are now in first place in the AFC East people! To give up after 4 games is complete loser mentality in my eyes, have you guys played competetive sports before? Calling a mutiny on Lindell and many people screaming to waste a 2nd round pick on Nugent, that would have been the worst pick in Bills history.

Again YPC is not the end all be all. Teams that pound the ball (and run a lot) generally have lower YPC averages. The Bills haven't been that team this year. Also, as I said, Willis' YPC last game was not good. Give him back that 50 yarder and his YPC is great. Does that make that much a difference in how good a game he played? No it doesn't, but it would look that way on the statsheet. Willis has been average this year, I'm hoping he turns it up a notch or two, but I don't think we'll see that speed he used to have until he drops some weight, and even then I'm not sure he still has that gear he had in college.
